I know there are some older guys here who have dealt with their share of injuries. I just had an ACL replacement (cadaver) and a Meniscus repair about a week ago. Anyone gone through anything similar?

Re: The worst pick up players.
what are your guys thoughts on hand checking in pick up basketball? About 10-12 years ago a lot of the older guys (guess I'm now one of the older guys :P) did it in some highly competitive games and many of the younger guys hated it. Fewer guys do it nowadays, but I still hear one complaint each weekend.
On the other side most guys playing defense are scared of any kind of contact, playing off just because they don't want to get crossed.Comment

I've never been to a gym for pick up ball where players didn't hand check. If it gets to the point that they are grabbing your arm, jersey whatever, or you have marks on your arms and they still aren't calling fouls that's when it's somewhat excessive.

Re: The worst pick up players.
From what I've noticed hand checking in pickup games is fine. I may use it on defense honestly idk lol. The thing I'll say is that when someone isnt hand checking you or trying not to foul the game definitely opens up. In pickup games you have to be a little bit smart about how you attack especially if you're going against some physical guys.
But no one has ever actually called a foul or anything like that, just some guys whine about it (minor things like asking why you so touchy feely, stop hugging up on me, etc). Though apparently some of it may have been warranted. There is one guy that confuses hand checking with playing like a press corner and will open palm punch people in the shoulder lol.Comment

I thought the same, but I've noticed more and more people not initiating contact on defense.

I'm a guard though... I'd be pissed if someone was playing me that tight all game, especially since I could probably create a foul every time but that just makes the game longer, nobody fouls out, no free throws. I feel bad for big men because they do get touched up all the time, and probably fouled most of the time they get the ball.Comment

Re: The worst pick up players.
I know it's an old thread, but the past few weeks of pick-up ball has hit me with some inspiration. All of these players are guys that my son and I constantly play with on a weekly basis.
1. Three Point Turnover Machine. If the guy knew his role and worked for set three point shots, he would be the best player on the court. Instead, he constantly jacks up contested three point shots which result in air balls. Whats worse is he turns the ball over at least twice a game by trying to dribble it between the defenders legs or by trapping himself by the sideline while taking the ball up court.
2. The flashy offensive/Zero defensive player. We all know this guy. He can make some great passes, a nice drive or two, and score anywhere on offense, but his hustle, defense, and rebounding are non-existent. We were up 11-9 in a 5 on 5 going to 12, and he had 3 turnovers in a row to seal our fate. The first came on a no look pass to me in an attempt to have me dribble the ball up court. I probably should have been ready for it, but why the hell couldn't you just call my name and send me a chest pass???!!! The second one he got stripped at mid-court and didn't chase his guy down for the layup. The third time he got trapped and lost the ball falling to the floor. SMH......
3. The Lazy Stoner. Dude is just there to play with his friends, I get that.... But *** ****! He won't play defense, won't run, makes poor shots on offense... And blames it on the ganja...Every time.....
4. Curry Extra. Ok, this is definitely a new one... He doesn't play much defense, doesn't rebound much, doesn't have a drive/dribble... But dude can hit 50% from the three point line at Curry range. To make it more ironic is the guy is about 250 6'0, barely any muscle, but he is lights out from 5-6 feet behind the line.Last edited by Chairman7w; 04-11-2016, 03:17 AM.Comment

Re: The worst pick up players.
I'm 32 but still waiting on the day when I can't handle outdoor courts anymore. If all these other posts are any indication, I'm due for an asphalt-related breakdown soon. But for now, as long as my ankles are attached (never a guarantee), I don't notice much difference between the two surfaces in terms of body impact.
Good news: My knees currently feel awesome. Zero pain, soreness, etc.
Bad news: The rest of my body is feeling rough, even two days later, haha. I've been trying to stay in shape with running, biking, lifting, and stairs too. It's just, basketball shape is a different beast. I coughed and felt like the side of my ribs were going to explode (odd place to be sore). Also feeling it in the muscle and tendons between my calf and heel.
I kind of like it though; means I put in some work.Comment

Re: The worst pick up players.
Just a little update... I went over a month without playing a full court game due to traveling plans, cold weather and lack of gym access. Finally got a chance on Tuesday. Rode my bike three miles down to the park, played for three hours, then rode home.

Re: The worst pick up players.
In fact, the rise of playstyles like that of Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson kind of makes sense in hindsight, because aspects of that approach have been present in pick-up ball for a while (the ol' pull-up-for-three-on-a-fastbreak has been an open gym standard for years, for instance).
But the super extreme stuff—like crossing over, trying to split three guys then running back behind the line to shoot a 27-foot three—I haven't seen any real increase in prevalence in that regard... yet. So far, I think the AND1 era still has the No. 1 spot locked down when it comes to negative ramifications of generalized street basketball environments.Comment

Re: The worst pick up players.
I definitely have...and I know Curry is your guy....I meant to throw a 'lol' in there after the Mark Jackson bit to reflect that I wasn't totally serious....
There will always be chuckers, but from the shot selection to their posture you can tell some of there dudes think their the Chef out there, lolComment

Also, the influx in the trey-bomb approach in the NBA (and college and preps as well, now that I think about it) has had me wondering about whether our pick-up/open run play style was closer to ideal than we were ever led to believe (in terms of trey frequency only, not hustle, defense, etc). And if one's pick-up games go by 1's and 2's (aka treys are worth 100% more instead 50%), it makes all the more sense to give the long ball a good hard look.
But if the folks trying the 27-foot fallaways really catches on... I will be about as displeased as I was whenever the Allen Iverson fan showed up to the park back in '03.Comment
