    You're right.

It's the kind of defensive style that wins an NBA Championship, not the kind that gets you put in documentaries about your rivalries with teams that beat you/being the pole Pippen nuts on on the poster in the Chicagoland area. And those Knicks teams were tough from pillar to post. I mean, Charles Smith was a grinder.

It doesn't matter who or what on the Knicks; the Celtics, in three years completely outaccomplished them playing a brand of basketball that was physical, gritty, and hard nosed. The Detroit Pistons of the 2000's excelled defensively and were physical. It's not their fault their place in NBA lore is as Champions while those Knicks are there because they got into a few slap fights.

I think with this current generation, we can all agree that this one does indeed suck and I'm not just talking about Sports either LOL.

            Two words.

            David. Stern.

Stern has an infatuation with European style basketball.

That's been his vision for 30 years, and he has gradually pushed the league in that direction.

His dream is for the entire league to play like the 2002-2004 Sacramento Kings, Golden State Warriors, and Dallas Mavericks.

He has succeeded, and there is no going back.

Great players are great players, regardless of era, and I still appreciate them for what they are.

                I agree Sportsguy.

I have heard this from so many people I talk with, "The same people who complain about flagrant fouls now, are the same who wish for the good old days."

A cheap and dirty play has always been frowned upon (regardless of era), it is entirely different than allowing the defender to play defense. The lack of physical defending (with hand checks primarily) has changed the game for the worse. The offensive player is protected more in the NBA, than a QB is in the NFL.

I think your diminishing the accomplishments the Pat Riley Knicks made in those years. They were an elite team that did go to the (fake) Finals. To frame them as only thugs because the Celtics got ONE ring in this no-hand check era is suspect criticism.

They werent the only ones playing hard defense in the early-mid 90's.
Most East Coast teams had a "Nuthing down the middle/in the paint" attitude.
Are the Bad Boys' Defense a Non-Ring 1990 Style Defense?

Simple really. More offense, means more scoring. which means more money. If handchecking was reinstated scoring would bomb out and the tv ratings would plummet accordingly.
