That's funny I thought if you were under contract you couldn't play for any other teams.

I was wondering about that too. Maybe there is a clause that allows it during a lockout?

I think I read that in normal circumstances theyd need clearance, but in this instance they have the right to seek employment

Problem is if the NBA tries to block it there is a good chance they will be taken to court.

I don't see a lot of players going over there though, because there is still the issue of European/China teams having spots open and enough money to accept a rental. I think one or two more all-star players will go overseas not sure who though...but if the lockout gets really ugly then...who knows?

So just to clear something up do the players in the nba still get paid while the league is in lockout or is all payments put on hold?

I don't have a problem with players going overseas if they can't play in the US. These guys only have a limited playing window so losing a whole year could be a huge difference in a players potential earnings what with the chance of injuries etc.

During a lockout, the players get no moola...

Nope. Contracts are suspended during a lockout so they get no pay and they are free to play where ever they feel like it.

                    Bobcats cutting jobs
Charlotte Business Journal - by Erik Spanberg
                    Date: Thursday, July 7, 2011, 2:04pm EDT

The first ripple from the NBA lockout in Charlotte: the Bobcats’ corporate communications director lost his job Thursday and several more staffers could face a similar fate.

The Bobcats decline comment, citing personnel policies.

Michael Thompson, the director of corporate communications since 2008, confirmed he has left the organization.

A source close to the situation says several more positions could be cut as soon as next week. The Bobcats employ 130 people.

The NBA is in a lockout following the expiration of the collective bargaining agreement with players on June 30. Charlotte has yet to turn an operating profit since entering the league as an expansion franchise in 2004. The NBA says 22 of its 30 franchises lose money.
I hate when I see thing like this. Especially when the economy is not good right now. When players and owners are battling for financial control of the NBA, it's the everyday workers that I can relate to that takes most of the casualties.

I hope more players go ahead and play overseas, if only for the fact that it should get the CBA negotiations going. It's shameful that both sides can't just humble themselves and get a deal done. Owners need players and players need owners. Work it out!

The thing I don't understand is if that many teams lose money annually, why does the league keep expanding? Especially if they already knew how difficult it was to turn a profit.

Still, I'd like to see the salaries come down a little, but there's no way that player salaries are the only reason teams lose money.

Also, I kinda like seeing the players go overseas. Hopefully it lights a fire under the owners.

This is exactly what I was talking about earlier in the CBA thread. Not good people, not good. I'm sure they can have their position back when the lockout ends, but these are the people who haven't been making 6 figures and have a family to support or a regular working persons wage. That's scary guys.

Sonny Weems is taking his talents to Zalgiris Kaunas of Lithuania in a no opt out deal for a year. Because he is not currently under NBA contract, he is free to make the jump without worry of FIBA approval.
