I almost would have rather taken the gamble on Drummond, especially since the Cavs were one of the few teams in position to take him that have a top PG, but whatever.

Hopefully Waiters makes me look like a fool for questioning this pick.

Wow, didn't even realize I spelled it that way.

DeMar would move to SF, not Ross. DeMar is much better suited as a SF anyways, because his handles are pretty ****ty and his shooting isn't much better either (although it did improve last year).
Waiters not starting had nothing to do with talent. It's just the way Boheim does things by starting the upper classmen. Waiters would pretty much always come in at the under 4 time out and played starters minutes.

BlueNGold, I agree that its risky because Waiters did come off the bench, but he got starter minutes. Also, last year we took someone who only played 11 games. Kyrie was more well known. IMO as long as we see the skills there, it shouldnt matter if a player started or not. Fun fact, Grant was with both franchises that drafted a bench player with a top 5 pick.

That's what I was hoping the case was.

One other slight red flag to me though: Syracuse plays a 2-3 zone so Waiters didn't play any man defense. Obviously that's not what he was drafted for, but it would have been nice to know if he can defend in 1 on 1 situations. I think he'll be able to considering his size, strength, and athleticism but who knows.

Anyways, after taking everything in since last night, I'm starting to come around on how the draft played out for Cleveland. At the very least the Cavs should be a fast, athletic team that will be fun to watch.

I think Waiters will be an above average defender, if not really good. As you said he's got the size and athleticism but he he also has the mindset that he wants to play defense. I live in Syracuse so I've seen every game of his. Before I'm called a homer, I hated waiters after his freshmen year lol. He worked really hard last summer, which is another trait he has going for him.

I really think you Cleveland fans are going to cone around on waiters.

I just hope the Cavs are right. This pick is a "I'm smarter than everyone in the room" type pick. I hope Grant is right here. He's been a part of the only organizations to take a player in the lotto who hasn't started for his team *Marvin Williams and now Dion Waiters*
I just don't like the fact Waiters wasn't even a starter at Syracuse. That scares me taking a guy who wasn't a starter in college in the top 5.
People are looking too hard into this. He was more than capable of starting for this year's Syracuse team and could have started the year before as well. He was the best 6th man in the nation and the reason Syracuse started as hot as they did. Had he started he would have been a shoo in for an AP All-American team. Boeheim does this to all freshmen of his (except Brandon Triche).

About him weighing more than Anthony Davis, what did you expect? Davis was on his way to being a guard before he had that freakish growth spurt. He's still growing into his new body. Waiters has had years to put that on without growing.

This was a very good pick for Cleveland. They got who they wanted, which is what everyone is overlooking. I think it will be a better pick than Harrison Barnes, because unlike Barnes, Waiters can create his own shot, defend better and has no problem getting to the basket. Barnes needed a guy like Kyrie to set him up the way Kendall Marshall had done this year. He also can't dribble more than twice without losing the ball. He's no lock to be great as every player in the entire draft is.

Cleveland had a good draft guys. Calm down and take a deep breath. You got a steal in Tyler Zeller who is the most NBA ready center of the bunch as late as you did and an explosive guard who will complement Kyrie well.

Bradley Beal is the bigger reach at three. Everyone knew of Waiters' potential as the season progressed. No one, and I mean no one, was pegging Bradley Beal to go this high in the lottery. Not even during the Tournament. All of a sudden he was the darling of the analysts a few weeks ago. Don't make sense to me. Waiters has a better body of work over two years.

As a guy that watched every single game that Waiters played in in his career, I completely disagree. I don't think Waiters can be a point guard in the NBA (which luckily, the Cavs don't appear to want him to be). But having said that, Westbrook is a much, much better athlete and has much better shooting form.

I think Cleveland was a good fit for Waiters, but I think he's destined for a sixth man role on a winning team, whereas they could have gotten a starter for a long time in Harrsion Barnes.

Edit: Here's what you'll get with Waiters.

Strengths: Finishing ability, plays passing lanes, swagger

Weaknesses: Not a willing passer (but has the skill to be a passer if someone can talk some sense in to him, but I think that will be tough because of the next weakness), swagger, doesn't give his best effort on defense, shot selection, inconsistent jumper/poor mechanics

Waiters will be able to penetrate and finish around the rim right away, and he'll get steals because he's very good at playing the passing lanes and reaches in like crazy. However, I think he'll be foul prone early in his career because even in our zone, he didn't move his feet well defensively, got lost in rotations, and generally didn't seem to put forth his best effort to stay in front of guys; just went for blocks and steals all the time and used his hands rather than his feet. There will be games where his awkward looking jumper is absolute money, and he has great range on his shot, but he was incredibly inconsistent. He had 11 games where he shot less than 40% this past season, and after Fab's first suspension, Waiters abandoned his attacking ways and began settling for contested jumpers far too often. He also passed up wide open shots for his teammates and preferred to take contested fade-aways instead.

He won over the Syracuse fan base because he overcame a poor freshman season and became a highlight machine in his sophomore campaign, but I have big questions about his basketball IQ, willingness to move his feet on defense and work on his jumpshot. I think that he thinks he's much much better than he actually is, which could either hurt or help him.

I need NBATV to get their own coverage of the Draft next year because BSPN's coverage was horrible last night.

They literally made every player seem like they were coming from the worst hardships ever laid upon man. Don't get me wrong, some of the players did come from or dealt with some ****ed up situations but they damn near had a sob story for every player.

No. It was the interviewing the family members that made it soooo much worse.

ESPN can go **** themselves for interviewing that little girl.

It's probably a good thing Waiters was picked by Byron Scott's team. Scott will push him HARD to get better. If he thought Boeheim was tough, he better watch out for Byron's foot going up his ***.

I was going to post something similar this morning about ESPN's draft coverage.

                              1. Cutting to Jeremy Lamb's father when he burst out in tears and he actually turned his head away and the cameraman stood right on him. Let that man live and have his moment.

                              2. Asking MKG's mother about her dead brother/MKG's uncle AND his stuttering problem when he just reached his dreams was a low as someone could go.

                              3. Who doesn't know Thomas Robinson's story by now. Asking that young man about that at THAT time? And then dude's little sister????? I don't like calling for people's jobs but that was just some of the worst reporting I've ever witnessed.
