I don't get it, if Deron signed with Dallas he'd be closer to home AND play on a team capable of contending. I'm guessing he was in it for the money.

They would definently be a nightmare with Ray and camby. I dont like the idea being thrown around of LeBron playing the PF and Bosh at Center, so having a legit defensive Center who can score even a little would help get them away from that idea.

But for whatever reason, I see Allen sticking with the C's.

Pretty much confirms Joe Johnson was the difference:

Responding to comments by Jason Kidd on WFAN Friday, Deron Williams confirmed to reporters in Las Vegas that he was closer to signing with the Mavericks than most, including Nets officials, believed.
Jason Kidd told WFAN that as of a week ago, Deron Williams had decided to join the Mavericks, but that the Nets' moves early this week, particularly the trade for Joe Johnson on Tuesday, turned him around and got him "excited" about Brooklyn.
When asked about Kidd's comments at the Team USA training camp, Williams confirmed that Johnson had indeed make the difference. "I was really close to going to Dallas. Joe [Johnson] got me over the hump. It came down to where I had a chance to win."
The Nets opened their presentation to Williams Tuesday with word that they had just completed the deal with Atlanta. Williams had met with the Mavericks early that day as the Nets and Hawks were putting finishing touches on the deal that sent five expiring contracts and a first round pick to Atlanta.
Williams called Brooklyn's moves a "rejuvenation" opportunity for himself, Gerald Wallace and Johnson. Nets officials long knew Williams would occasionally stray from Brooklyn toward going home to Dallas, but believed all along he would re-sign with them

The Mavs didn't lay out a plan to show how they were going to compete.

And what does being closer to home have to do with anything?

Well it makes some sense. The Mavs are an old team. If they didnt win in their first year with D-Will, its likely they never would have. Dallas would be getting worse every year, contrary to the Nets who will get better. I'm not saying the Nets will win a championship, but they're still a better team in the long run.

It had a lot to do with Nash signing with the Lakers ...

                  Via Ken Berger's twitter:

With non-guaranteed deals to move in sign/trade for Camby, Knicks may have edge. Camby's history with NY, and Glen Grunwald, also factors.

Pretty much the same role he had at the end of the year last year - come off the bench and hopefully hit some threes.

I don't think you can say if they didn't win in their first couple years in Dallas they never would have, Cuban is going to do what he can to build a contender and he is willing to spend, so even if they didn't win with Dirk I think they would definitely reload with other pieces after he was gone.

As far as the Nets getting better every year that is debatable to, if they get Dwight then absolutely that's the place to be, if not though we'll see. DWill and JJ isn't going to be making it past the 2nd round without another big piece.

I just don't see why he would be even considering Miami offers.

He's going to have the same role and make half. Does he honestly believe he is still a starter in this league, and that he's going to start over Dwyane Wade? Come on Ray.

I know his role with the Celtics would be diminished but who do you think Doc is going to put out there when the game is on the line in the 4th? + a no trade clause and more $. I'd say he's returning to BOS. But I hate the fact that it's 6 Mil per year because BOS won't be able to re-sign Wilcox and "Peaches". or any other role players.

We won't know if they will be but the CBA is not on your side.

Tax teams sure won't have the flexibility to just make things happen.
