Very true words. Though, even if Drummond were in Howard's Magic position, I struggle to envision him being as successful offensively as Howard. Drummond's offensive post ability is still so miniscule; it almost makes Dwight Howard look like Hakeem out there. We'll see what develops, but as I've said before, I think some guys just aren't cut out for effective back-to-the-basket skills. Drummond's felt more like a super DeAndre more so than anything else.

Re: Andre Drummond, better than Dwight?
Umm you were saying that the three point shooting was a direct result of teams having to help down on Dwight and Dwight being a good enough passer out of the post to make plays. What I'm trying to point out is that Stan Van Gundy's system allows freedom on offense -- both in his Miami and Orlando days, so the three point shooting wasn't a direct result of teams helping on Dwight, but having him there does help.Comment

Re: Andre Drummond, better than Dwight?
I think some of you might be underestimating Dres capabilities. Don't forget the kid is 20 years old, and he played with Greg Monroe and Josh Smith on the front line…and HE WAS STILL ABLE TO AVERAGE 13 points and 13 Rebounds. "he became the first player in NBA history to have seven 20-rebound games in a season before turning 21 years old." as this quote clearly indicates, he is redefining his position. Do people forget that he is 6'10 and looks like a twig compared to dwight who is a physically imposing player with gargantuan shoulders even coming into the league at 18/19.
side note:
Also REmember when lebron came into the league, didn't he make the playoffs for the first time in 2006
? the frozen one? and now he's the chosen one who has two rings and is the best player of his generation and possibly of all time.
Let drummond get lessons from hakeem and workout with him and I promise you he is going to be a beast more than he already is.
I can clearly see him averaging 18 rebounds a game at the peak of his career. and lets not forget that if anybody has ever seen drummond play, his tenacity and heart stands above all. there was always a question with dwight being able to "step up" during critical games. yes he made the finals but he has also disappeared in more important games than he has showed up in, which is why he hasn't earned his ring….yet. Also what happened with him in LA last season? He couldn't handle the pressure.
He fools around too much whereas andre drummond is 20 and wants to get better everyday and improve cause he understands that losing is atrocious.
get rid of the jokers on the pistons roster and equip drummond with some complementary pieces around him and you'll see him start to come into his own. He will save the pistons from mediocrity eventually. for the next nine years lets see how much of a beast he becomes…
because frankly…at the age of only 20… "Drummond is just the second player in league history to average at least 13 points, 13 rebounds, 1.5 blocks and 1.0 steals in either his rookie or sophomore season (h/t B/R's Jared Dubin). The other name on that list? Hall of Famer Bob McAdoo."
Did dwight even do that? I'm not trying to knock dwights ability, but I think because the pistons are in such disarray and are frantically trying to rekindle their franchise…drummond isn't getting the respect he deserves. if he was on any winning team right now he would be the third best player on the team, and theres nothing wrong with that by being only 20.
sure he cleans up garbage….but you can't simply be a garbage man and accomplish something nobody has ever been able to do in the history of the NBA.
i don't even know whats up with this entire franchise, though. back when the pistons were competing for championships and winning them as well, people never really even gave them the respect they deserved.
especially in 2004.
don't sleep on drummond, thats all i'm going to say.
even if he doesnt become better than dwight in the longer run…his heart is unprecedented.
he could have easily given up and stopped bringing it on a dysfunctional team. remember…
Josh smith brandon jennings…firing your coach midseason…having to deal with so much implosion, and he still averaged 13 and 13 and played in nearly every game this season?
if that were dwight. he would have maybe played 50 games and faked an injury and said to himself "whats the point in playing if this team is going NOWHERE."
the fact that drummond is out there and remaining composed just speaks to how great a player he will be.Last edited by mrbigshot; 04-20-2014, 09:44 PM.Comment

Re: Andre Drummond, better than Dwight?
You're reaching for a lot in this post.. We all know he's a rebound machine, but he could average 30 boards and be the first player to average 13 and 30 since 1953 or whatever and his overall offensive game and defensive game still isn't at Dwight's level..
I don't think anybody is just completely writing him off saying he can't become better than Dwight though. But for him to be as impactful in all areas as Dwight at his peak, he's got a ways to go.

Perhaps you may just recall the small bit of criticism James received from unreasonable folks who felt he should have been winning championships immediately. I happen to recall a legend from day one who was averaging 27, 7, & 7 at age 19, handling, distributing, playing the right way, and absolutely dominating.
Let drummond get lessons from hakeem and workout with him and I promise you he is going to be a beast more than he already is.
Some players just don't have it. I'm not ready to rule Drummond out in that regard quite yet, but he's looked awful enough with his back to the basket thus far to make me wonder if maybe he's just not cut out to be a certified threat from that position. But yes, more coaching is always a good idea.

In fact, as a Pistons fan who's subjected himself to way more Detroit games over the past two year than is probably healthy, what has stood above all for me with Drummond is his size, leaping ability and wingspan. He's not exactly making a living off of chasing down loose boards and outfighting everyone in his way. Instead, the vast majority of his caroms are the type that just leave me shaking my head saying, "Good grief, that is a big dude." That's not to discredit him, as many big players don't average 13 boards a game, but that's just the biggest thing that sticks out - a 7'6'' wingspan on a guy with a 31''+ vert. He's not even giving a lot of players a chance on the glass.

Re: Andre Drummond, better than Dwight?
If anything Drummond looks bigger than what Dwight currently looks, aside from shoulder width.... Definitely not a twig compared to any player in the league.. Although muscularity/skinny-ness has nothing at all to do with how good someone is at basketball lol.
