Re: 2014 Off-Season Thread
A lot of it depends on how good Waiters is this year. And how well Love accepts not being "the guy".

2014 Off-Season Thread
In non-Cleveland related news and for those interested in the rest of the league(understandable if you're not since this is the down time for the Offseason):
From Gary Washburn of the Boston Globe:
While the Celtics are trying to figure out ways to clear roster space before training camp, moving Rondo is not a high priority. First off, Rondo will be a free agent next summer and fully intends on taking the LeBron James-Carmelo Anthony tour of teams and extending the negotiation process deep into next summer. It is highly unlikely Rondo would sign an extension this season with an interested team, especially the Sacramento Kings. Second, the Celtics don’t feel pressed to deal Rondo because they are still trying to determine if he’s part of the future and they are intrigued to see him in action a full 18 months following ACL surgery.#RespectTheCultureComment

Re: 2014 Off-Season Thread
http://www.cbssports.com/nba/eye-on-...trade-for-love
Diamond Leung of the Bay Area News Group transcribed a radio interview with Klay Thompson's father, who said that owner Joe Lacob and GM Bob Myer wanted to trade Thompson for then-Minnesota-Timberwolves forward Kevin Love, but front office advisor Jerry West and coach Steve Kerr "took (Thompson) off the table."
Thompson was involved in months of trade talks about being dealt for Love, and initially it looked like the trade was a foregone conclusion. But suddenly word came out that the Warriors were resisting including Thompson for Love, and then it became an absolute that he wouldn't be traded.
That opened the door for the Cavaliers to swoop in with a superior offer of Andrew Wiggins and Anthony Bennett. Thompson is set for a massive extension this fall, and if not, a huge new deal in restricted free agency. After all, how are the Warriors going to manage leverage when they weren't willing to give Thompson up for Kevin Love?
This will go down as one of the bigger non-deals in league history, and how it's remembered will either prove the Warriors to be geniuses or fools, because that's how hindsight works. Meanwhile, it should be noted that according to Thompson's father, West and Kerr apparently have the power to veto, or at least convince management and ownership not to do something. That's got to be a little concerning, and it doesn't really fit with what we know of Lacob, a hands-on owner. How this all shakes out will be interesting to watch.Comment

Re: 2014 Off-Season Thread
I'm sure Mychal Thompson is going to talk more about this today on his radio show out here.
It had seemed like a done deal a ways back, because he was on the air talking about his son being bummed out about being traded to Minnesota. Obviously the trade never transpired.Comment

Re: 2014 Off-Season Thread
I mean, I guess I can see why you wouldn't want to break up the Splash Brothers, but...damn, Kevin Love is a better player than Klay Thompson. Perhaps it was the fact that the difference between Kevin Love and David Lee isn't a Grand Canyon sized gap *although it is pretty sizeable.*
Idk, Warriors will probably regret it. I don't think that team, as currently constructed, is a title contender.Too Old To Game Club

Would have been a lateral move IMO. Don't think the warriors would have been all that better giving up klay and lee for love

A Love/Martin swap for Lee/Klay would have been a pretty large upgrade for GS in my opinion.
Edit: Idk if they could have landed Martin though.

Re: 2014 Off-Season Thread
You still have the same issue of Bogut needs to be healthy to provide the interior defensive presence to be a contender. If Bogut doesn't stay healthy, you lose one of your best perimeter defenders in that trade. Currently, the team doesn't have an issue scoring so they didn't need to make the Love trade.
They added Livingston in the offseason, still have Iggy and Green on the roster.. They have plenty of perimeter defense.

Livingston is hurt and who knows how Kerr is going to use him. Same with Pierce in DC in that they might not be used how they were in BK.#RespectTheCultureComment

Re: 2014 Off-Season Thread
There was indication that Deron was going to leave Utah once he his contract was up or once he had the opportunity. There were already talks/discussions about it and once he and Sloan had that fight, that pretty much sped up the issue. In other words, they didn't wait for the inevitable, they went ahead and got it out the way, which is why that trade caught everybody off guard especially since we were trying to get Melo at the time, so no we actually didn't have to chase them.
I was one of the people here saying that if Love really wanted to play with Lebron, he'd end up there one way or another and that Cleveland could've ended up with him without giving up Wiggins but that would've been basically up to Love to control the situation by telling folks he would only go to Cleveland and that he didn't want Wiggins to get moved, which only a player like him and of his caliber could pull off. But considering where the Cavs were just a few months ago, I haven't heard anyone say "Man, the Cavs should've tried harder to get more instead of ONLY Love".
Anyway, I don't think OJ (or anyone) is saying the Cavs should've tried harder to get more as if Love is not enough. I actually think that's been the biggest misconception of the entire debate. It just appears that the leverage was far in the Cavs favor, so it only makes sense to use it to it's fullest potential.
Personally, I would've pushed even harder to keep Wiggins out of the deal... especially when GS pulled back Thompson. All the talk about other teams being interested were coming out of Minnesota's camp. I fully believe they were throwing up smoke screens.
With the Cavs clearly okay with dealing Wiggins, I can see what OJ is saying but don't really know what scraps would be worth pulling from Minny or Philly to make you feel better about using the leverage than "just getting Love". So it just is what it is.
I also had to pull back on my original stance too, after talking to a friend about it all. I still don't see the Cavs winning next year so the cap hell will be a reality when they start gelling, but it's not like Wiggins contract is much longer either and they'd really be hard pressed to resign everyone if they were to find a way to keep Wiggins and Love (along with James and Irving). The situation will be similar with Waiters soon but they'll happily let him go try to prove he's as good as he thinks he is when his contract is up.Comment
