Re: MVP of the season so far?

When it comes to winning the MVP award, recent history tells us team success does indeed play a major role, whether we like it or not. Since the 88-87 season, only two players have won the MVP award while being on a team that didn't finish first in their division (both teams finished second). MJ won the award in 87-88 when he averaged 35.0 points a game and Karl Malone won the award in the 98-99 lockout-shortened season when he became the oldest player to win the award.

Anthony Davis is having a good (not great) statistical year, but it is not translating to team success the way other past MVP winners have done. He'll definitely get some votes, but I would expect that he place somewhere near 4th or below, well behind some order of Curry, Harden and LeBron.

Haha not at all man. If everyone here had the same opinions and agreed with everything the next person said this place wouldn't even be fun. I like having discussions, and taking my own opinions to the extreme to see how others look at things. You ain't hurting my feelings any lol..

I do want to add that I think Davis is having a great year, since my previous posts didn't really give him credit, though I wasn't trying to take any credit away from him either.. I just feel, purely for MVP discussion, that a couple guys are ahead of him. He's definitely not out of the conversation, I would be perfectly fine with him getting some first place votes.

He should definitely make the All-NBA first team, and defensive 1st or 2nd team as well.

@wwharton I don't think Davis would be MVP if the season ended right now, Curry and Harden are ahead of him right now most likely. LeBron might be as well. I just think he's right there with those guys. I think you can make a legit case for or against all of the top MVP guys.

This is probably the best MVP race I've witnessed. As far as parity from the years the top 4-5 guys are having.

Davis might not get MVP this year but it's safe to say, barring injuries, he should have one or five before his career is over.

He'll have a few IMO. I think he's within a couple years of being the league's universally recognized best player.

LeBron is slowly aging out of his "prime" and Davis is very rapidly making huge leaps.

Would love to see him as part of a better team. He could have a very long, top tier, Tim Duncan -esque career.

He already is. There isn't a GM in the league that would take anyone above him.

Yeah, he's not very good right now. He just has what would be the highest PER of all time if the season ended today, but who's counting?

Re: MVP of the season so far?

You're really great at interpretation, that's exactly what I wanted to say. He is shooting just 1.8 more per game then Tyreke on a not really good team. His usage is behind guys like Harden or Curry. He is behind Lebron in offensiv rating, and they are nearly similiar on defense.
Not that all this is sooo important, but just to say advanced stats can go in both directions.

Is he in the MVP talk? Of course, well deserved. Would I trade everyone for his future? Definitly. Would I take him just for this year in trade for Lebron, Durant or Curry? That's the question where I would have to say no. But yeah, in 1 or 2 years this will be a different story.

Well obviously, he's only 21. But I don't believe he's the best player in the league right now.. He will be though.

Well, this thread escalated pretty quick. Not surprised considering who was being discussed.

And I wish PER was not a factor when determining MVP. Same with +/- as well. Two very flawed "advanced stats" that shouldn't play a factor at all when determining MVP UNLESS used with proper context, which of course people won't do...because using context wastes time.

I'd say Curry is the MVP at the moment, but Lebron James is starting to make a push.

I know that they don't get the stats to compete for it, but the Hawks wouldn't be who they are without Millsap and Korver. I mean, we're witnessing the best shooting season EVER by Korver. That's gotta be worth something.

Would you give either of them the MVP over Teague if a Hawks player was to win it though??

How many years now has Millsap been the most underrated player in the league.. This goes back to a majority of his Utah days as well, he never gets the credit he probably should.

Actually it's been a while since Milsap was underrated and that's a good thing.

You think so? Idk, I feel like most people never mention him when talking about guys around his level.
