Knicks would free up roughly $30m in cap space for next summer.

They'd waive Melo and he could sign with HOU or LAL.
Not familiar with all aspects of the luxury tax but how do they take in all those contacts and shed tax?

That actually sounds like a good move for all sides involved, Lee is a great backup for Roberson since he doesn't give a big drop in defense, could slide down as PG's back up as well. They desperately need a back up guard, Hardaway isn't really that but he could handle the ball off the bench like a Harden or Jackson did, despite being more of a 2 naturally (hasn't even even palyed some 3 in NY?) so two versatile pieces that OKC's bench has missed for the past couple of years now.

Obviously a huge move for NY to get that space cleared up, incoming Kyrie and Jimmy?

    Melo gets what he wants.

My understanding has always been that a buyout allows the player to become a free agent immediately and choose his next move, typically on a buyout the team ins't always on the hook for the full salary. Meaning Melo could accept a 20mil buyout and OKC wouldn't be paying him the full amount of 27 or whatever it is. If waived the team owes him the full amount, then the player has to go through the waiver process before he can make his next move. A buyout typically helps both sides, teams usually only waive a player when they really want rid of them or really need a roster spot.

I think buying him out allows them to pay him the money without paying the luxury tax that should technically come along with it. So they're stuck paying him roughly $27 mil either way, but they can avoid paying an additional $63 million in luxury taxes by buying him out I think.

Man it doesn't even matter, they'll still be over the tax bracket by like 200 million lol

I'm trying to do the math myself but lord it gets complicated. On my own, I don't see it helping OKC enough to get them down a tier in the luxury tax table. I saw the trade proposed on Twitter by a pretty reliable account so I'm taking them at their word on it saving OKC on the luxury tax.

Burke was also a solid backup last year. When we tried starting him or expanding his role, things went downhill fast. But he could come off the pine and give you 20 in a given night.

Man, we'll see, but that Lakers team, as is currently constructed is a disaster waiting to happen. I know Bron is buying into the vision of being an off the ball scorer, but hes never done that in his life. If he reverts back to LeIso ball, that team is hot trash.

Also, the Warriors are unbeatable. They crushed maybe the 2nd best team of all time in 2017 like it was no problem. They got bored this year and still crushed most of the West and LeBron. It's a wrap. Plus, we already know, the Warriors dont get injuries.

The Pacers, IMO, are the biggest threat to Boston in the East, especially over those posers in Philly. Especially if they are moving on from Marcus Smart. They struggled without Smart last year and he was a huge part of their defensive scheme.

Nate got them playing some serious basketball. I'd definitely keep an eye on them.

IMO, OKC would be my projected 2 seed in the West with that move. Roberson back, and Burke, THJ, Lee, Noel off the bench? That's solid. Guarantee we see them pushing the tempo this season, especially if Grant starts in Melo's old spot. All of those guys would fit perfectly with that.

Disagree with me all you want, that 2017 Cavs team was probably one of the best offensive teams anyone will ever see. The stats and performances back it up.

That team was so outrageously talented shooting the ball. And they did, somehow, turn on the switch to play defense in the Playoffs.

I think Melo to LA could work. LeBron and Lonzo can create offense for him better than Westbrook was able to. Has to bust his butt to get in WAY better shape though.

Rockets interested in Melo should he reach a buyout, per Shams.
