Well Marcus Smart was named captain so that should tell you about the talent that’s playing this year...

On the whole Dwight thing, I mean if he just goes out and plays hard and accepts that role he should be what any team would need in their back up big. And probably better than JaVale as well. Partially guaranteed contract basically makes this a zero risk move, the other options could all likely be available later in the season still if this were to be a failure.

Not sure about the losing 25 pound deal. He did look slimmer last time I saw him in a video as well. Maybe that’s better on his back, and health wise, but I think his size/strength was a pretty big advantage for him offensively. I’m assuming he’ll pretty much sink into a rim-runner role at this point.

Edit: don’t see him being some pice that substantially alters their playoff odds, makes them jump a spot in the standings, or anything like that. But definitely takes away a weakness of not having a big on the floor with Boogie out. And with a guy like him you always have the shot of him having one of those “throwback games” when you really need it in the playoffs.

I missed the game, I wish it was on a major outlet instead of NBATV, but from looking at a BBallBreakdown video (w/ a narrative/agenda driven title) there was a ton of miscommunication and late rotations on defense. These guys weren't executing or communicating on defense at all and it cost them big time. And the younger group (Tatum, Brown, Mitchell, etc.) might be overrated in NBA circles, but looked shaky in "big lights" of international play.

Pop may need to resort to a zone - which would also be bad because international players/coaches see it a lot more - if the terrible defensive play continues. Also, he might have to use White and Smart a lot more in stretches because Mitchell/Walker are a below average defensive combination.

Pop will shoulder a lot of the blame if they don't medal, but it is clear as day FIBA hamstrung the American players w/ the terrible scheduling of this tournament and making it back - to - back with the Olympics. Oh well, people overreact/overrate international tournaments/the Olympic results anyway.

Sounds like Andre Drummond has said that he’ll be a Free Agent next year despite having a $28 Mil player option.

                  Per ProBasketballTalk

I’m a free agent next summer.

It should be fun. I’m excited. I think I’m the only one that has a big contract coming up for that year.

For next year’s free agency, obviously the year I have this year is really important, this being my contract year. The way I play will show what next offseason can do for me. So, I think for me as a player, just continue to play hard and do what I do best and making an effort to help my team on both ends of the court. Anything is possible next summer.
He did clarify on IG that it doesn’t mean he’s trying to leave Detroit but that he’s excited because it’ll be his first time experiencing FA.

I am 100 percent okay with moving on from the Andre Drummond era and I don't think I want anything to do with my team paying him the amount of money he'll be looking for.

Only thing he's truly elite at his position is his rebounding. So many other guys who are better or more efficient offensively while simultaneously being much better defenders.

Ben Simmons looking scary good in these off-season scrimmages.. I really hope the Al Horford experiment works for that group.

He's had moments where I've been proud of him—sustained periods of effort and contribution and clutch tips that save the day. But by and large, dude just isn't great at playing basketball.

And it's crazy, because we all usually figure that someone cleaning the glass like that must be a savvy workhorse or something. But outside of tipping in his own misses multiple times, outsizing his opponents, and dunking point-blank alley-oops, there's just not a lot going on there. In fact, he's a net negative in so many realms (for one, I've never seen someone of his standing who was so inept in the post while still insisting on giving it a go).

So the Rockets gave Eric Gordon a max contract. 4 years $76M. They just handing out all the money for a second round exit. Western conference finals at best
