Yeah, you make a good point about dangerous plays not necessarily involving intent to injure.

I really still feel this play's a tough one when it comes to levying punishment. I've hacked the bejesus out of some folks on the fast break in my day and even when I'm pissed, I'm generally not banking on contact with their arms resulting in them heading face first into the ground. Generally, going for the arms—not the midsection or legs—has been the "safe" way to stop a basket, resulting in a lot of nothing.

The grab, in this instance, was unnecessary and warranted the ruling it received. But I'm not sure I'm ready to sit here and act like this is the most irresponsible play I've ever seen (not that you're personally saying that, Simmonds).

I'm not a big fan of listening to Greg Anthony talk but I did read a quote of his about how the league has worked hard to eliminate this stuff from the game. And I think he's right. I think we were lucky to get out of the 80's and 90's without more Caruso-like results (that is, significant injuries). This is literally from the 1992-93 season alone (the play at 20 seconds sets a solid tone for those who wish not to watch the whole thing):

It's good to continue to move the game forward from that stuff. But I also don't think it's going to be possible to eliminate those plays altogether. Anytime you've got 10 giants sprinting everywhere, chasing a ball, jumping, and defending each other, that line will get crossed from time to time. At this point, I feel the punishments in place are stiff enough to limit those events though, which is why we don't see 1992-93 basketball played anymore.

I saw the segment on NBA TV where Greg Anthony was talking about it and yeah he was very disturbed and upset by it.
Channing Fyre was too, only instead of focusing on the league punishing Allen he focused on how he thinks the players should handle the punishment. He was bothered by the fact that no one on the Bulls confronted Allen, and how he thinks Allen should face a reckoning on the court.

Thats why I'm in favor of a league punishment. What we don't need to return to is the tit-for-tat of the 90s back when every team needed an enforcer. The league should hand down a punishment so the players don't feel like they have to.

I am adding one more comment on the Allen Caruso fire.

I've always thought Allen should be suspended because of what

GG alluded to, and that is, this isn't the 80's or 90's anymore. I felt the

same way when Amare pushed hard on Bogut in the back and caused his

elbow to become spaghetti. That cost us being out of the playoffs that year and

Bogut was never the same player after that. I thought Amare did Bogut dirty and

thought it was cheap. After watching many gross clips, Amare didn't push him hard, just

a bit of a push in the back. Amare was booed in Milwaukee for quite awhile.

Point is, Allen's play was dirty and could have been prevented without injuring

anyone. 3 game suspension,(hoping?) but Allen will be booed heavily in Chicago(rightfully so) and probably other arenas moving forward because of his former rep at Duke.

The right thing to do for Allen is a public apology and one to Caruso privately.

Also, in Blazers talk, Anfernee Simons is in his 4th pro season now and is getting his first real starter minutes and taking advantage. He’s 22 now (came in as prep to pro) so is the same as Dame and CJ were when they entered the league.

He’s not Dame and the sample size is small but promising, but does his performance so far this year affect how Portland look at any offers for Dame or CJ?

First they need to sign him. No team will take him in a trade because he's not signed long term. But I think that point has passed. He wants to get paid and I think he will. He's so young.
