This was what I was basically asking though. When are these other situations? Has there been another one this year? Was there any with Memphis last year? The only other NBA instance with him I can remember off the top of my head was summer league with Grant Williams. And that wasn’t even a “dirty” or reckless situation it was just him being a dickhead.

It really sucks that Caruso got hurt. It was rightly called a flagrant foul IMO but seeing hard fouls on the break isn’t exactly new and I do think Allen was at least initially going for the ball which is more than a lot of other players can say. I don’t really see why this situation would require a suspension; it’s generally not been handled that way in the past but I won’t complain if he is suspended either.

Still not quite sure of the defending here and pretending like we’re at the regular run of the mill hard foul on a fast break situation here. When a guy is off his feet in mid air and you come swooping in front the side of him and grab his arm and use that momentum to grab an arm and yank down on the guy so you can swing your off arm back at him, just trying to swipe at the ball or not at that point it’s still reckless and dirty. Not even sure how this is up for debate.

I remember listening to Chris Vernon (ringer podcast) who is a Memphis guy talking about Grayson Allen after he was traded. He said in all his years covering the NBA he has never been more surprise by how someone acts in person then what you would expect. He said he was the direct opposite and couldn’t be more niceRetro Redemption - Starting over with a oldschool PowerBone Offense

That doesn’t shock me. Sports at any level are competitive but at the pro level it’s a whole different thing and that means some dudes will be horrible on the field and great dudes off it.
This does not apply to Vontaze Burfict.

That was totally crazy what Allen did he needs to be suspended at least. Not cool man. Ballers don't need that stuff in the game. Where is Kyrie with a "we don't need that in our game" quote when you need it?Unofficial OS Ambassador of "CPU vs. CPU"

Re: 1/11 - 1/24 Games Discussion Thread
It was a dirty play and there is no defense for it.
That does not mean when Allen went up in the air he was thinking "I'm going to end this dude's career."
Dirty play does not always mean intent to injure. Often it means a disregard for a player's safety. You could say OJ is right. In Allen's mind he was doing what he had to to prevent any chance for an and-1 situation, and no consideration was given to the safety of Caruso. But that is what makes it dirty. There should be no room in this game for dudes having the mindset of "if he dies, he dies."
May not be a malicious thing, but its clearly a lack of disciplineComment

The ref saw Lu Dort throw an elbow into Love and did nothing.
Strange game and lucky to get a W because that’s probably the worst we’ve played this year lol. 22 team TOs, 8 for Darius, 51% from the line.
Again though, that’s a game we lose in previous years.

I really still feel this play's a tough one when it comes to levying punishment. I've hacked the bejesus out of some folks on the fast break in my day and even when I'm pissed, I'm generally not banking on contact with their arms resulting in them heading face first into the ground. Generally, going for the arms—not the midsection or legs—has been the "safe" way to stop a basket, resulting in a lot of nothing.
The grab, in this instance, was unnecessary and warranted the ruling it received. But I'm not sure I'm ready to sit here and act like this is the most irresponsible play I've ever seen (not that you're personally saying that, Simmonds).
I'm not a big fan of listening to Greg Anthony talk but I did read a quote of his about how the league has worked hard to eliminate this stuff from the game. And I think he's right. I think we were lucky to get out of the 80's and 90's without more Caruso-like results (that is, significant injuries). This is literally from the 1992-93 season alone (the play at 20 seconds sets a solid tone for those who wish not to watch the whole thing):

It's good to continue to move the game forward from that stuff. But I also don't think it's going to be possible to eliminate those plays altogether. Anytime you've got 10 giants sprinting everywhere, chasing a ball, jumping, and defending each other, that line will get crossed from time to time. At this point, I feel the punishments in place are stiff enough to limit those events though, which is why we don't see 1992-93 basketball played anymore.Last edited by VDusen04; 01-23-2022, 09:53 AM.Comment
