Re: Boxing Off-Topic
If anything, Alvarez is the bigger than GGG on any given fight night (as you pointed out).
I've made this complaint before, but boxing is basically a game of who is the best fighter who can lose/gain the most weight in a 24-hour period without significant damage to their well-being/energy level. The real skill involved is losing and gaining weight, not so much boxing ability...
Weigh-ins should be an hour before the fight. Initially, guys will be missing weight left and right, but eventually, everyone will have to fight at their true ring weight. It will "right-size" all the divisions so that boxing skill, not simply being the bigger man in the ring, will take precedence.
It drives me nuts when they flash the weights on the screen and you see they've gained 10 to 20 lbs since the weigh-in, 24 hours ago.
Canelo routinely weighs in around 170 for his Jr.Middleweight bouts. How can anyone say he's a JR.Middle??? He's a damn Lt.Heavyweight!
Chavez Jr basically stopped providing his fight-day weight because it was so outrageous.
I think in his bout vs S-Mart it was speculated that he entered the ring at 185. Meanwhile, Martinez was probably at 165. How is that fair? Or safe??
The funny thing is, the fighters don't want any change.
When at Vancouver we met Sergio Mora and Shane Mosley. That question was raised and they both were adamant that they did not want same-day weigh-in's.
But why would they? Mora was a very large welterweight (at the time) and Mosley is a very strong man who has a physical edge everytime he comes to the ring.
Boxing commissions are incredibly corrupt so we'll never see change. But if they did what they were commissioned to do, they'd make a change solely based on safety concerns.
I dream of a day we have 1-hour weigh-ins and only 8 or 9 weight classes with one belt.
It'll never happen in 1000 years. But one can dream.Comment

Just for fun, based on estimated actual ring weight, what do you think the "real" major weight-class rankings would be? I think the most fun to speculate about is light heavyweight or middleweight, since a lot of the bigger 'name' guys are functionally campaigning at those weight classes anyway...
I'm pretty sure Canelo, and definitely Jr. Chvez, don't even crack the top-10 at 175-lbs..Comment

Re: Boxing Off-Topic
I don't doubt that everyone who is a name fighter or near the top doesn't want any change, because the system is working for them right now. But as long as they allow these ridiculous disparities between weigh-in and fight-night, the really necessary attribute in boxing will not be boxing skill, but rather the ability to lose/gain weight quickly.

Imagine if there were only the 8 or 9 weight classes. Both those guys would be forced to fight at a 175 limit if weights were taken an hour before a fight.
They'd get murdered by a bunch of MW's and super MW's who could comfortably fight under 175 on gameday.
Canelo is the soul reason I hate the catchweight classes out there. He's been hiding at 154 for years and it's only because he's young enough to cut a massive amount of weight without it affecting his skills. Yet.
Oh how glorious boxing would be even if we cut out all those tweener divisions and forced 'champs' like Alvarez to defend the belt at the given weight and not at some weight he predetermined to give him an edge.Comment

Re: Boxing Off-Topic
Day-before weigh-ins were once created to make boxing safer for fighters battling dehydration in an attempt to make weight. But the time has come to recall the failed experiment, says Nigel Collins, to offset the number of fighters who have abused the system and put their bodies at unnecessary risk.Comment

Re: Boxing Off-Topic
From the dawn of modern boxing (during the early decades of the 18th century) until the middle of the 19th century, all prizefighters were lumped together regardless of size. If the same system applied today, Floyd Mayweather Jr. would have to fight Wladimir Klitschko if he wanted to be champion.
after reading all this stuff about weightclasses, money, cheating weigh-ins, heavyweight boxing gained more and more importance.....atleast for me....what'ya want to cheat on heavyweight-divison?Comment

Re: Boxing Off-Topic
He's not going to do it and he shouldn't. His trainer , Abel Sanchez, said as much only a few days ago.
It is Golovkin who is the mandatory challenger to Alvarez's 160 WBC belt and he can't be forced to fight at anything less then that. Will the WBC enforce their rules and strip her of the belt? We will see.Comment

As Jaybee pointed out, there are some quality HW fighters out there. We just have to get rid of Fury and Klitschko.Comment

Re: Boxing Off-Topic
Crawford versus Postol is now official, but it goes to PPV. Arum is downplaying the numbers in saying 100,000 buys would be sufficient, and admitting that Crawford activity and limited regular HBO dates are forcing the "pay format", but how are they going to sell this unless they go down in price.
Having said that I've been looking forward to this ever since I missed Postol's impressive KO win over Matthysse, but not at full price PPV.Comment

By the way Fury is clearly mentally disturbed.
