Sorry, game 6....21 to 9 FT advantage, and that doesn't even really begin to reflect what was happening out there...

You're fooling yourself if think the weight drain was the main reason Chavez didn't perform Saturday night. When is the last time the guy has looked good in the ring? When he knocked out fringe contender Andy Lee -- in 2012.

Chavez had a very small window, from about 2010-12, when he looked like a contender at 160. Otherwise his career will be best remembered for eating Fruit Loops for breakfast at 4 p.m. and smoking weed.

The idea that Chavez was ever a credible opponent for Canelo is pure folly.
I think at this point, everyone has their own view of what happened out there and no one is going to change their mind. I concede that in retrospect, JCC Jr. was not a credible opponent at this stage of his career, and he hasn't looked particularly good in some time (I would say 2012, when he was seconds from knocking out Martinez, although he obviously got hammered the entire rest of the fight). Having said that, he's been bouncing around weight classes and not been particularly busy, but has always retained a go-forward style and credible (if not overwhelming) power. There was no reason to believe he wouldn't even throw punches on Saturday night, even if he was going to get pot-shotted all night, which is what I fully expected. I did think Canelo was better; I did not think Jr. would not fight.

That's why I thought this would be a reasonably entertaining fight. I was wrong, obviously. Lesson learned (yet again).

great fights don't need hype, they sell themselves....lesson learned.

de la hoya-mayweather was at 154, if i remember correctly. mayweather surprisingly went up in weight to face oscar. one of the few times, if only, times he has ever done that. also, the rematch was supposed to be at 147 but no way oscar was making that weight and floyd did not want to risk it at 154 again considering how close the fight was. that's why there was never a rematch, which would have huge numbers wise.

you're right....junior hasn't looked good in a long time. his best days are behind him at this point. just thought he had one great fight left in him.

during that small window chavez had, the fight was never made between the two camps. who knows? it might have been much more competitive at that time.

Sometimes we hope for a good/great fight most particularly when we have decided to commit PPV funds to it.

Junior was at the height of his powers when he brutalized a good fighter in Lee, and although his "size through rehydration" advantaged has been documented and talked about relentlessly I then viewed him impressively-that seemed like ten years ago.

I sorta think it's the opposite with me, though - I never buy fights, but because I thought this would be a good one from the announcement and still didn't decide to buy it until fight night, I was doubly surprised. Obviously there were some social variables involved as there always are (didn't realize there would be a bunch of people over that would also be interested in the fight), but I would have felt the same if it were on free TV.

Also, since it came up re: the Mayweather-de la Hoya fight - am I the only one that thinks de la Hoya won that fight? I mean, it was close, but to me that fight was the closest Mayweather fight other than Castillo #1. Maybe I'm mis-remembering, but I re-watched the de la Hoya - Mayweather fight a few months back and I was surprised by how close that fight was.

I did too. He landed the cleaner shots in my opinion. Oscar was smothering hitting a lot of arm and shoulders. Just my opinion though

I thought Oscar was in the lead by a round (maybe 2) until the last 3 rounds where Mayweather swept him.

It was definitely a close fight and if Oscar had more gas in the tank, maybe he pulls off the upset.

For anyone interested, using the Title Bout Championship Boxing simulator, I ran the Golovkin-Alvarez fight 5x.
                      Results:
                      Golovkin TKO 12 Alvarez
                      Golovkin U12 Alvarez
                      Alvarez U12 Golovkin*
                      Golovkin TKO 7 Alvarez
                      Golovkin TKO 11 Alvarez

*Alvarez put on a boxing clinic in this one. Golovkin knocked him down once in Rd 2 and twice in Round 12.
I believe those were the only rounds he won.

In total, over 5 fights, Triple-G knocked down Alvarez a combined 9 times, while Alvarez floored Golovkin once (in the 5th fight in round 2).

Whenever you get a chance what does it say about Hearns VS Floyd in a 5 bout series at 147?

(For the record my opinion about Floyd's ability has gone way up since we debated this issues years ago).

The $50 million World Boxing Super Series just announced the two weight classes participating will be super middleweight and cruiserweight. Each division will have an eight-man single elimination tournament with the quarterfinals beginning in September, semis in early 2018 and the finals in May 2018.

Enrollment starts Monday, May 15th, and closes May 26th. In early July there will be an official presentation of the fighters including the brackets.

Weeks ago, before the two weight classes were announced there was speculation that Mikkel Kessler would participate.

I suppose it makes some sense for Kessler to fight in a tournament like this, since he really got to be more of a household name from the Super Six tournament way back when. I mean, it makes sense except for the fact that he's like 38 years old and already retired....

oscar COULD have won the fight.....he had the jab working effectively early in the fight but stopped using it for some reason later in the fight. floyd had no answer for it. oscar stopped using it and faded towards the end. i believe with oscar having the size and reach advantage (with floyd coming up in weight), he had the right game plan but didn't complete it for the full 12 rounds. my theory is floyd knew this and wanted no part of a rematch for that very reason. it was way too risky and he was lucky oscar dropped the ball. that fight did huge ppv numbers so why wouldn't they do it again? i mean he gave castillo and maidana immediate rematches from close fights, so why not oscar?
