Re: Boxing Off-Topic
I'm obviously getting GGG-Canelo but is it just me or is the undercard lacking? At least Oscar's cousin gets a good challenge. (Randy Caballero 24-0, 14 KOs).
Diego De La Hoya (No. 6) vs. Randy Caballero
12 rounds – junior featherweights
Joseph Diaz (No. 7) vs Jorge Lara (No. 10)
12 rounds – featherweights
Claudio Marrero vs. Jesus Rojas
12 rounds – featherweightsComment

Five of the six fighters on the undercard are unbeaten. While it lacks a marquee co-feature, this undercard boasts talent.I'm obviously getting GGG-Canelo but is it just me or is the undercard lacking? At least Oscar's cousin gets a good challenge. (Randy Caballero 24-0, 14 KOs).

Re: Boxing Off-Topic
Maybe I'm crazy, but I'd rather see an undercard of rising prospects matched tough than a marquee name beating up a nobody in a co-feature.
Oscar is using this undercard to showcase some of his best young prospects, putting them under the brightest lights for the first time. He's grooming the future. That's smart business.
Plus Golden Boy and K2 don't have deep stables of elite fighters to match on this card. Canelo is Golden Boy's franchise. And GGG is Tom Loeffler's meal ticket, much like Kovalev is (was?) for Kathy Duva at Main Events. This isn't Top Rank, which can build quality, in-house matchups for undercards, if it desires.
Name me one memorable fight from the Mayweather-McGregor undercard, which was a $100 PPV. Gervonta Davis, because he was an idiot? Badou Jack beating up a shot Nathan Cleverly? Seeing the sad shell of Steve Cunningham, who should have retired five years ago, lose to a nobody?
I rest my case.Last edited by pk500; 09-14-2017, 09:44 AM.Xbox Live: pk4425Comment

Re: Boxing Off-Topic
That's the #1 issue which holds boxing back from being a top sport again.
95% of fights are lopsided.
The GGG-Alvarez fights happen once a year? At best?
And this is a fight that should have taken place last year already.
DLH and Yellow waited and waited till Golovkin looked human.
You don't even have to fight a guy in the top 10 to GET IN the top 10.
It's ridiculous.

My only issue is the weigh-class(es) or lack thereof. I personally don't like watching the tiny guys. If you're fighting under 130lbs, for the most part, I don't care. For me 130, the guys are 'naturally' around 140 or more I think that's fair to say. But I'm not interested in the toughest tiny guy. a fight at 110lbs!?!?! ... smaller than most guy's gf's/wives. Many kids at 12 years old are too big for them.
It's that mental obstacle I can't overcome, combined with the actual physical attributes start to get warped. FIghts look like in fast-forward with less power. This is even more pronounced in MMA, when you see takedowns they seem so unnatural, like watching dwarves or something.
More power to you if you enjoy, but I just don't care for tny men smaller than kids fighting - and the fact that ALL of the undercard is this way is a missed opportunity. I love LHW, Cruiser, MW, WW, SWW SMW and so on. as soon as it dips below super LW or JR welter, the interest shrinks, but all but vanishes below 130 outside of extreme talentLiquor in the front, poker in the rear.Comment

Re: Boxing Off-Topic
You think I was suggesting a mismatch??! Get TWO MARQUEE names in there! They've already applied a $10 surcharge on the fight.
Don't really care about Oscar's business plan.Comment

I hope you put Lomachenko in your list of exceptions. The guy is the most extraordinarily talented active boxer on Earth. You're missing out if you skip on him because he fights at 126 and 130.My only issue is the weigh-class(es) or lack thereof. I personally don't like watching the tiny guys. One other point: I'd rather see two tiny men throwing bombs and tons of punches than two big guys laying all over each other after five rounds due to fatigue. My only issue is the weigh-class(es) or lack thereof. Look at Chocolatito and Sor Rungvisai from last Saturday night, at super flyweight (115 pounds). Tons of bombs, including the one that dropped Chocolatito for good.
A good fight is a good fight, regardless of weight, IMO. Power is proportional.Last edited by pk500; 09-14-2017, 12:49 PM.Xbox Live: pk4425Comment

Re: Boxing Off-Topic
You're missing my point. This is a Golden Boy promotion. Golden Boy has five world champions on its roster right now: Canelo, Rey Vargas, Jorge Linares, Miguel Cotto and Jezreel Corrales. Not exactly household names past Canelo and Cotto, and Cotto just fought three weeks ago.
Name me the available marquee Golden Boy fighters from this roster you would like to see matched in an undercard bout: http://www.goldenboypromotions.com/en/fighters
That's fine. But ignoring it -- and the lack of quality depth in the Golden Boy lineup -- makes your complaints about the undercard ring pretty hollow. To quote the worst cliche in the world, it is what it is.Xbox Live: pk4425Comment

Re: Boxing Off-Topic
Marinating this fight was a big risk for Oscar. If Canelo wins, that will attract more free agents to Golden Boy because it will prove Oscar knew what he was doing to delay, guiding Canelo's career with intelligence. If Canelo loses, then it will attract few fighters, and Golden Boy's franchise fighter will take another dent. That's the #1 issue which holds boxing back from being a top sport again.

A worthy risk for Oscar. There will be plenty of free agents on the boxing promotional market when the PBC folds within the next 12 to 18 months, as it almost certainly will. It's on life support now. Good riddance.Xbox Live: pk4425Comment

Re: Boxing Off-Topic
It's his promotion. Get Lemieux and Cotto together, are try to get a Golden Boy fighter versus someone else. Get it done and sell it-that's promoting. Take yourself to a level above Mayweather-Conor which you've (Oscar) been griping about for months.
And how does me not caring about Oscar's business plan ring hollow?? I REALLY REALLY REALLY don't care about his business plan unless I'm getting a share. It is what it is. I don't care that his plan is predicated on not having quality name fighters in his stable. Start promoting them or get new fighters. Ring Hollow!!!??? Give me a break.Comment

Re: Boxing Off-Topic
Yeah, Oscar just had to wait for the PBC to fold to become an even better promoter!!! What a guy!!!Comment
