I read that too, and that it was a devastating KO, someone described it as being put to sleep on his own leg ... ouch!

But I also heard it was well before the fight with ample time for it not to be an issue, although that would be discouraging I would imagine. No one seems to know who the sparring partner was, I'd be interested to know.

The problem is he has to beat Ruiz in the rematch or it's a moot point. His career is over if he gets KOed again.

Joshua matches up better against Fury than Wilder but given his current psyche and past chin problems, I think Wilder would take care of him early. Having said that if AJ rebounds strongly against Ruiz (a big IF) I'd still be interested in him taking on Deontay or or Fury.

Agreed. It is very similar to the Lewis vs Rahman situation. Fortunately for Lewis he destroyed Rahman so bad that people dont even think about the first fight at all. He also went on to beat a lot of names too.

No this is slightly different..Lewis was destroying Raman and got caught trying to be cute rolling his shoulder, and was kod with a hail mary.****iz is a skilled boxer with fast hands that took advantage of Joshuas slow reaction and weak chin on the inside ..those combos he was landing on the inside were quick and precise..Lewis had a ton of heart skill.and determination and everyone knew he would destroy Rhaman in the rematch..This cat Ruiz fought a month ago and beat Joshua..Joshua doesnt have half the heart Lewis had and judging by his reactions after the fight he doesnt seem concerned..

True. I said similar not exactly the same. I am definitely not putting Joshua in Lewis's class at all. I was just saying it was similar upset and that he will need to obliterate Ruiz in the UK. To save any of his clout that he has.

And yet Lewis was only a 5-2 favorite in the rematch. The mental challenge of rematching a fighter that has just KOed you isn't an easy one.

let's not get out of control here. Joshua - go ahead and question the chin, but heart and determination is a stretch to me. He got up off his azz 4 times! He got up after the Klitschko bombs to win! He has heart and determination, this stuff about him having no heart and determination is just going too far. These are heavyweights, they hit like mack trucks (aside from fury who hits like a yugo)

Yeah, I think Joshua has heart but I don't think his heart was in this fight. He looked a little out of it just before the fight.

Again thats your opinion and I respect it but he got up against a old klitshko who was on the decline and gassed out trying to knock Joshua out..since then Joshua has been hurt in all of his successive fights against inferior opponents..he also has been knocked out in sparring..this will wreck havoc on a boxers phsyche and confidence and like others have said his heart wasnt in this fight..he has serious flaws in his reaction time slow feet and has gotten defensive in all of his latest fights .****iz took advantage if all that ..he took his shots and fought back which shocked Joshua..again boxing fans know about his chin..I dont personally think he wants any part of Ruiz soon because he knows a loss in a immediate rematch will effectively end his career..these werent lucky shots he got caught with and trust me Ruiz gets taken out by Ortiz Wilder and Fury..just too big..and skilled..

does anyone know who the sparring partner is? I'd love to know that...

I think part of the shock was that straight right after the knockdown AJ caught him with as flush as it gets and he just ate it - watching it I was shocked he didn't go down again right away.

We shall see. I hope he fights Wilder and Fury and I hope Ruiz fights them too. It's good for the sport and all of those would def have me tuning in big-time.

Joe Rogan had a podcast recently where they talked about this sparring session. Apparently he was legit KO'd days before the fight.
Rogan was saying how he's not sure he fully recovered from that - which would explain why he kept saying odd things to his corner like "How did I get here" and "I don't feel right".

I wonder if the damage he took vs Wlad had residual affects. We've seen in the past where some fighters, who had seemingly strong chins, suddenly get dropped and stopped with regularity.
                          Ray Leonard comes to mind.
I don't think AJ had a strong chin to begin with, but maybe after his war with Wlad it deteriorated even further.
And of course, once you sign a guaranteed 9-digit deal, finding the heart to fight back against a game, hungry opponent, who's smacking you post-to-post, isn't as easy as it once was.

I'm with you edaddy; While I like Ruiz, I don't think he lasts very long vs Fury and Wilder.
And before this fight, I felt AJ would have been KO'd within a handful of rounds vs Wilder.
Fury doesn't have as much pop, but he can box. I see him winning UD's against everyone in the HW division.

Watched "Fallen Soldier" on Amazon Prime. Wow is that hard to watch.
To see what happened to Gerald McClellan is heartbreaking. Especially the part where he and Nigel Benn reunite for a benefit in Gerald's honour.
I felt horrible for Benn. He didn't do anything wrong, but you can tell he carries so much guilt from the aftermath of their bout.

Anthony Joshua is nowhere near the class of Lennox Lewis. Not even close.

Is it possible AJ's power is overrated? There are plenty of guys built like Greek gods who lack power. Tim Bradley is the first who comes to mind.

AJ knocked down Klitschko -- big whoop. So did a bunch of guys before Manny Steward taught Wlad to fight safety-first. Klitschko has a weak chin, just like Joshua. And I'm not convinced Joshua has great power for a man his size.

Everyone compliments Ruiz's fast hands and feet, and rightfully so. But why is no one complimenting his power? He put the giant Joshua on the canvas four times in one fight. Weak chin or not, power plays some part in that.

I think it's possible that Ruiz and Fury are the two most complete active heavies. Both know how to box and have good footwork, something Wilder and Joshua lack because of their thin amateur records.

Wilder-Joshua might be the most attractive matchup on paper, but I think that will be a terrible fight in the ring. Joshua will do everything possible to avoid Wilder's right hand and fight in a total safety-first fashion. Wilder will do his usual pawing jab followed by a bunch of wild attempts to land his atomic right, with zero head movement or footwork. The guy has no clue how to box.

It will be a sh*t fight between a lousy, overaggressive boxer and a lousy, safety-first boxer. Not to mention that it will be overmarinated by approximately two years. Plan on a Mayweather-Pacquiao type of disappointment, fight fans.

I would FAR rather see Ruiz-Wilder. I think Ruiz could give Wilder fits with his fast hands and boxing skill, much like Fury did. But Ruiz's hands are even faster. He could expose Wilder's utter lack of boxing skill even more than Fury, who was robbed by receiving a draw in his fight with Wilder.
