Exactly, he didn't look close to the old explosive martinez we knew. And his punches didn't have power, probably because he couldn't get the right leverage on them with his knee. He looked uncomfortable and just not right.

And yeah kellerman went a little over the top, especially saying that the old cotto was half the fighter he is now, i mean he looks good and roach definitely helps him. But let's not get carried away. I'd be interested in a GGG vs cotto matchup. I'd lean towards cotto though, but that fight could end up being a complete brawl. Would be great.

All I can say Wow about the Cotto that showed up tonight. Some fans don't like boxers to talk or taunt another boxer but Martinez brought the beast out of Cotto!

ehhh, on that count we'd have some disagreement. Cotto looked great tonight, but he beat a pretty shot fighter. I mean how many props do we give Rocky for knocking out Joe Louis?*

Fair point, but without looking at martinez and just looking at how cotto was boxing and placing his punches. He looked sharp in general. I mean granted martinez was definitely shot, but cotto looked nice in general. I'd still pick cotto based on experience, you never know how someone will look when they take a steep step up in competition. And cotto is definitely on a different level than anyone GGG has fought. I lean towards cotto in that fight, but i could understand it being a pick em' fight as well. Also GGG is bigger than martinez.

There have been signs from his last two fights that Martinez's body was breaking down. Martinez hasn't been the same since his fight with Chavez. He needed to take extra time off to rehab from leg injuries after his last two fights. I thought he got a gift decision against Murray and in that fight it was clear he didn't pack the same punch he had before.

It's too bad Martinez never got the mainstream success he deserved especially after KOing Paul Williams.

We obviously have the Alvarez-Lara factor, but Cotto-Canelo could be huge too.

                I agree.
That wasn't the S-Mart from 3 years ago. That Martinez would have murdered Cotto.

But Cotto deserves a lot of credit for resurrecting his career - which Roach is a huge part of.

Random thoughts - can we really consider Cotto a middleweight? This was a catchweight of 159 and Cotto still weighed in at 155.
I don't think Cotto can hang with GGG at this point. I think he gets murdered in that fight.
Even against top contenders like Curtis Stevens, I think he gets wrecked.
I'd rather see him stay at 154.

Some are suggesting he give Andy Lee a shot. Not sure why. I know he won this weekend (at 154 no less), but he was getting dominated until landing a perfect right-hand counter that knocked John Jackson out cold.

                  Re: Boxing Off-Topic

i think that the martinez that fought chavez would of gave cotto trouble too, i consider that martinez's last hurrah before his knees started to fail him(well they did kinda in that fight but only in the last round). I think cotto could give GGG some problems, but i actually didn't realize cotto weighed in that light, he might be too small actually. GGG is bigger than martinez, martinez was actually a small middleweight.

Yeah, this was a last second (literally) purchase for me, so I missed the Lee fight, but I saw a replay of the last 30 seconds or so and Lee was getting hammered even as he delivered the final hook-uppercut that instantly finished Jackson. He's only two years removed from Chavez whipping him, and he hasn't exactly fought HOF's since then.

The junior middle pool is kind of limited for Cotto outside of Canelo. Even if Lara pulls off the upset against Alvarez, Cotto-Lara wouldn't have any great marquee value. Developing welterweights like Porter and Thurman probably aren't ready for any move up. I'm not sure Cotto wants to return to 147.

Cotto against GGG, Qullin, or Curtis Stevens would hold my interest.

And Martinez's manager dismissed the idea of Sergio fighting GGG less than a year ago.

“At this point, I don’t think that Martinez will step into the ring with a Golovkin, and I don’t blame him,” said Sanchez. “I don’t blame him because I think that he’s done enough in this business that we should give him a chance to go out like that instead of against an animal like Golovkin.”

Yes, injuries were a factor but it's worth noting that Sergio's manager was discussing possible matchups with Quillin, Barker, Canelo or Cotto all the while dismissing the notion of GGG as an opponent.

Based on Cotto's performance vs Mayweather and Martinez and with Roach in his corner, I don't think anyone "murders" him. Added to that his new found confidence and that he's riding high, if you're a young fighter working your way up it's a dangerous proposition to fight Cotto because he might derail your plans. Cotto is a great fighter imo.

                            At 154?

I'd like to eventually see the fight too, but Cotto hasn't fought at welterweight since PacMan beat him up five years ago. Cotto would have all the negotiation leverage and I'm positive this would be a junior middleweight fight. Is Thurman ready to test his considerable power at 154?

It should matter people want Mayweather to fight Cotto or Thurman. If you ask some fans it's not a big deal in weight.

It's better for Thurman if the fight is at 154. If he should lose he would have every excuse already in place and if he wins, he can fight at 147 or 154 taking the biggest fights available to him.
