I'm sure at least that many watched their bout in May. And that was at $100/pop (assuming the vast majority of PPV buyers had at least 2-3 viewers, and anecdotally I'm guessing the average was much higher than that).

It was 4.4 millions buys, so I think you're right.

Wow, our discussion is much more timely than I may have realized:

While Floyd Mayweather Jr.'s opponent for Sept. 12 has yet to be announced, it's looking more like Andre Berto on CBS rather than pay-per-view.

First of all, Mayweather is going to fight Berto? Snore.

        Secondly, maybe on CBS? Interesting...

That was also a historic fight. Ward and GGg would be lucky to hit 8 mil.

CBS huh? I'll believe it when I see it. That's a lot of commercials for a snore-fest. Of course they'd lose money, but how much? A 30 second spot for last year's World Series cost about $520,000.

            too much

I know there's other fights going on, but my only interest is Chavez Jr VS Marcos Reyes (32-2-24 KOs). This shouldn't be a cakewalk, and it will be Junior's first fight with new trainer Robert Garcia. Garcia seems to have a lot of control over his fighter, stating that he wants Chavez to get in three or four fights a year. This bout is at 168.

I agree...I'm oddly compelled by Chavez Jr. for whatever reason, even though I sort of gave up on him ever reaching his potential years ago. At any rate, it's almost always an action-oriented affair when he steps in the ring, so it's worth watching him IMO.

I can't take chavez seriously, and i honestly can't stand him. Bullies guys at smaller weight classes by rehydrating up to cruiser weight on fight night, then gets stopped when he steps up and fights someone his own size(like i predicted), then says he was winning the fight, then makes up his own catchweight class, only to not make the weight. Chavez Jr. is a joke to me.

Also, if floyds last fight is on free tv, i'm sure he will fight someone like berto. But frankly, it's nothing to complain about if it's free, and he's earned a tune up/soft touch fight after he easily beat the guy people said he would lose to. And i can't help but feel this isn't his last fight and he's saving a more solid name for the record breaking fight.

Hard to argue with anything you said there. That's why I feel almost compelled to apologize for still having an odd interest in seeing him fight. I think it has to do with the fact that whatever else happens, there will be action at a Chavez Jr. fight. For better or worse...

Free TV is the only way most people will ever see Floyd fight again. I know it doesn't matter because he has more money than anyone could ever spend in one lifetime, and there's a committed core of boxing fans that will pay to watch Floyd no matter what (and he and his team are genius marketers), but I think casual boxing fans are completely turned off by the prospect of ever paying to see Floyd fight again. "Fool me once..." and all...

EDIT: I should note that the Floyd vs. Berto on CBS is only a rumor at this point, unless the story's been updated in the past few days.

Yeah, I'm interested to see what Garcia can do with him. Otherwise I wouldn't be interested.

Generous scoring for Chavez (97-92, 98-91, 96-93) including counting an intentional headbutt in his favor for a point.

The 168 division isn't nearly as heralded (or overrated) as it was when the 2009-2011 Super Six Tourney took place. Frosh, Kessler, and Jermain Taylor are gone. Arthur Abraham was exposed by Frosh, Dirrell, and Ward in that tournament, hasn't beaten anybody significant since then (KOed Stieglitz tonight), yet stands as the second best 168 guy, miles behind Andre Ward.

Besides Ward, there is an opportunity for Chavez, but I think he will fail. I don't think he touches the Top Ten of a relatively weak division for another year, year and a half. He wants to fight like a bully all the time even when he's not the bully (Fonfara), abandoning head movement, the jab, and any good defensive strategy.

You can't teach an old dog new tricks, especially when it's Canine, Jr.

Man **** Chavez. He is just a rich kid playing boxer. Facing another smaller guy who can't hurt him so he half-asses a fight gets a gift from the Ref because his last name is Chavez and very generous scoring.

I want so badly for him to fight Ward just to see him get embarrassed and destroyed. I want it so much I would pay PPV prices just to see it. I have no respect for Chavez Jr none whatsoever.

That'd be an easier tune up for Ward than Smith was.

I'd say "AS EASY". Smith offered ZERO resistance. Ward would KO Chavez.

Actually, i also like the idea of chavez jr being sacrificed to GGG. It could be a testing fight for GGG to see how he does moving up, chavez jr would make the perfect punching bag for him. and i'd love to see if GGG could put him down.
