I thought it was just me, but I seemed to be having a really hard time finding the Olympic boxing broadcasts anywhere on the NBC family of networks. Turns out, I'm not the only one...

Longtime boxing trainer and commentator Teddy Atlas believes that Olympic boxing suffers from corruption, and that NBC knowingly hides it.

I distinctly remember Teddy and Bob Papa calling out the Olympic judges and AIBA at the London games, and their incredulousness at the Magomed Abdulhamidov (Azerbaijan) vs Satoshi Shimizu decision (where Shimizu knocked Abdulhamidov down 5 times and lost on the cards!!!). Apparently, the head of AIBA had Atlas and Papa removed from the games (!).

I mean, at this point, saying boxing is corrupt is like saying water is wet. But there are times where I just start to wonder whether my time might not just be spent elsewhere?....

            Re: Boxing Off-Topic

Reading a biography on Sam Langford.
Despite being only 5'6" tall and a natural MW in his prime, he defeated most of the world's top heavyweights and was the most feared fighter in boxing.
Jack Johnson ran from him while being the worlds champ.

It's also incredible to read how most black fighters had to fight one another dozens of times due to lack of competition as many top white contenders drew the 'colour line'.

He fought Harry Wills a total of 22 times. And Wills was a beast in his day.
As was Joe Jeanette, another great fighter, whom he battled 15 times.

Incredibly, he fought several years while being completely blind in his left-eye and winning most of his fights (and while being on the decline as well).

For anyone interested, the book is called "Sam Langford: Boxing's Greatest Uncrowned Champion" by Clay Moyle.

Impressive fighter. Surprised BoxRec ranks him as the #4 heavyweight of all time.

In 22 fights against Harry Willis he went 2-6, with 14 no decisions. Incredible-shows you how good Willis was.

Very true. And Langford admits that he 'got licked' by Johnson in their first fight.
But at the time, Langford was 156 lbs to Johnson's 185.
He was also 23 while Johnson was a more experienced 28.

In the book they quote Johnson, while overseas, talking about up-and-coming contenders and he mentions Langford. Nobody in the UK had heard of him and Johnson said that once the "Boston Tar Baby" matured and gained a few pounds he would terrorize the HW division.

Many opponents, of whom both shared fights with, have said they felt Langford would have beaten Johnson.

For his part, Langford has said that Johnson was the toughest man he ever faced.

I doubt it. He's just not enough of a household name. But I hope I'm wrong.
In this book he comes across as such an affable, funny guy. Some of his quotes are hilarious. He would routinely chat with the crowd while in the middle of a fight and more than once, he would position his opponent in a specific spot of the ring and ask the fighters 2nd's if this was a good spot to lay their man out.
More times than not, he'd do exactly that.

While a young 135lb 15YO, he worked at a bar sweeping floors and doing general labour.
A big, rough man entered the bar, drank for a spell and then tried to walk out without paying.
Langford hollered to the owner that the patron was trying to skip out on paying.
The bar owner told Langford that this was part of the job and if he wanted to keep it, he'd better get the customer to pay.
Liking this job (he was homeless previously), he confronted the man, who was more than happy to oblige Langford in fisticuffs. He rushed at Sam who quickly deposited him on the floor with an uppercut.
The man got up and rushed again, only to be seated again.
When Langford asked if he wanted some more, the man replied something to the affect of "No, I'm fine right here" before pulling out his wallet and paying the tab.
When he left the bar, the owner was incredulous. He told Langford that the man he just beat was the toughest man in the neighborhood and quite the bully. Nobody wanted to confront him.

It wasn't long after that Sam found a boxing gym and began to train.
In his first amateur bout he was getting the worst of it after the first round or two.
The bar owner had been in attendance and after seeing Sam get outboxed he walked to his corner between rounds and told Sam that if he fought his opponent like he did the neighborhood bully, he'd knock him out.
Sure enough, at the start of the next round, Sam rushed out and KO'd his opponent.

Stanley Ketchel is another fighter I've read about in the past. That guy sounds like one tough nut.
If anyone has the time, read the 4 part series called "Welcome to Hell" published on Eastsideboxing.com.

It's an awesome read. Especially when they begin discussing his bouts with the Illinois Thunderbolt, Billy Patke (who wore nothing but a jock strap in the ring. Weird).
The wars those two had sounded like something out of Rocky film.

                  Part 1
                  Part 2.
                  Part 3.
                  Part 4.

P.S. Other noteable fighters that I think are worthy of a biopic or movie are the great Joe Gans and Harry Greb.
Two masters that don't get enough credit.
And is it really too hard to get a movie about Ray Robinson? He's the best fighter who ever lived.

great stuff, money99.....sugar ray robinson is definitely deserving, no doubt. i think usher would have been a great choice to play him, but he's already in hands of stone. hoping that movie will be good, by the way.

I can tell you I DIDN'T see the Johnson-Ketchell fight live but the film revealed anything but an exhibition gone bad (Ketchell allegedly broke a "take it easy" agreement with Johnson by knocking him down in the 12th). From the opening bell you can see that this was a real fight (1900's film quality aside). Of course Jack Johnson remained heavyweight champ with a devastating retaliatory punch that left some of the middleweight's teeth embedded in his glove.

Ketchell was murdered exactly a year after that fight, but his clock was ticking anyway. If he had avoided that attacker another one would have surfaced or he would have died of a communicable disease or from alcohol abuse.

GGG VS Kell Brook this Saturday from London at 5:30 eastern time on HBO. The telecast is slated for 1.5 hours and there appears to be no under-card scheduled. The welterweight champ is a 4-1 underdog.

Roman ‘Chocolatito’ Gonzalez moves up from flyweight to junior bantamweight to try to capture his fourth division championship. Despite Carlos Cuadras' impressive record (35-0-1 [27 KOs]) ‘Chocolatito’ is still a decided favorite. That fight is on HBO a few hours after Golovkin-Brook.

On Friday night Spike has a couple of interesting fights. Sergio Mora has trashed talked his way into a rematch with Daniel Jacobs. If you remember light hitting Mora looked pretty strong as both fighters traded knockdowns in round one, and then in round two Jacobs knocked Mora down again. When Mora got up he couldn't put weight on his foot and the bout was stopped. It was later learned that he had suffered a fractured ankle as he claimed that the punch didn't hurt him, it was the ankle giving out before that.

Spike also offers two hard hitting highly ranked lightweights facing off in favorite Robert Easter and Richard Commey.

                          Good weekend of boxing.

Jacobs bullied Mora last night...he looked a solid weight class heavier and was in no trouble.

Robert Easter and Richard Commey passed the "chin test" by absorbing each other's heavy punches. Easter narrowly wins the IBF lightweight title with pal Adrein Broner rooting him on every step of the way. I don't know how Commey remained upright after that vicious right from Easter in the final round. It appears at :40 of the highlight video.

Pretty precise-I think a left hook(s) to the body will start Brooks' "downfall".
