Excuse my ignorance but why is clenbuterol such a huge deal?

If THAT David Joshua steps in the ring against Wilder he'll get absolutely destroyedComment

Re: Boxing Off-Topic
The fight had some early moments of promise but turned into a little better than dreadful. Parker took some initiative with mostly "non-contact" jabs and some rushes inside, but didn't do enough or risk enough to compensate for height and reach disadvantages. When I knew Parker had no chance of winning my only interest was whether or not Anthony could land one of his wild uppercuts. Very unimpressive performance by Joshua.
Alexander Povetkin, who never met a steroid he didn't like, destroys David Price and reduces him to near tomato can status.Comment

Re: Boxing Off-Topic
That ref probably was the ideal third man in the ring for a dull fight. Without the incompetent ref, there's not much to talk about regarding that fight. Joshua didn't look sharp. If I'm Wilder, I'm liking my chances a bit more after Saturday night.Xbox Live: pk4425Comment

Re: Boxing Off-Topic
Well, GGG-Canelo part 2 is officially off (for now).
https://www.cbssports.com/boxing/new...ed-drug-tests/
He hid at 154 despite the fact he ballooned to 175 on fight night.
Ducked GGG for at least 2 years.
So long, Yellow.Comment

Re: Boxing Off-Topic
This pretty much cements my feelings for Canelo. I don't like him and maybe its because Golden Boy has been protecting their Golden Goose. Like Money said he hid from dudes at 154, picked on Amir Khan got a washed up JCC Jr and was gifted a draw from Adelaid Byrd otherwise his shine would be gone as a top fighter....He is a fraud and a detriment to the sport.
But the problem is w/o Floyd fighting NSAC needs someone to bring money in so I doubt he gets any kind of serious suspension. Too much money at play.Moderator

Re: Boxing Off-Topic
If you are looking for a reason to give Canelo the benefit of the doubt, some experts do think it's possible that the levels he tested at (<1ng/ml) are within the realm of potential meat contamination, and may not be immediately suspended under WADA guidelines. This is a relatively pro-Canelo article, but if you're interested: https://www.bloodyelbow.com/2018/3/3...ed-failed-test
Having said that, there are at least as many counter-arguments as there are arguments for why the positive test occurred. For one thing, clenbuterol-tainted meat a known issue in Mexico, so the fact that Canelo and/or his camp didn't do anything to potentially avoid it seems at the very least slightly careless. I know drug testing in boxing can be charitably described as desultory (at best), but it's not like Mexican fighters routinely test positive for clenbuterol at sub-nanogram levels. Also, I think it was Carlos Molina who mentioned that he only eats chicken during training because it's a known issue down there - and Molina doesn't have nearly the high profile or money riding on his fights that this GGG-Canelo fight will bring.
Even if you want to give Canelo the benefit of the doubt and believe he tested positive because of the tainted meat, however, it still looks bad. The optics of it are poor, and it opens up all sorts of questions about him that may not have come up otherwise (justified or not). Athletes have had varying levels of success using the tainted meat defense (Mexican soccer players: successful. Alberto Contador: unsuccessful), and even other Mexican fighters have mentioned that it seems to be a convenient excuse - which you can either take at face value or read between the lines.
Whatever your opinion is, the bottom line is Canelo Alvarez is now a fighter who has had a positive test for PEDs. In any sport that's not a good thing, but in a sport where you can potentially injure or kill your opponent, it's a scarlet letter that takes a long time to go away (if it ever does). All the Golden Boy spin and Ring Magazine apologists in the world can't help that now. Since Canelo's entire career has been one big exercise in opponent and image management, I would say that it's unlikely his star ever really fully recovers from this.
Personally, I didn't see a need for a 2nd fight anyway, since the first one was relatively decisive from my perspective and I saw everything I needed to see. If they go at it again in August or December, I suppose I would catch the replay, but I'd be extremely unlikely to buy it. The real victim here is GGG: I hope he had something in his contract where if the fight got cancelled because of shenanigans on the part of the Canelo camp, there's some sort of monetary payout for recompense. I'm sure they can find an opponent for May 5, but nothing with the interest (deservedly or not) of the GGG-Canelo rematch.
I suppose if there's only one good thing that comes out of this mess, it's that I read somewhere someone giving him new nickname: Clenelo Alveroids.Comment

As for the tainted meat defense I just don't know one way or the other. I do know that I would eat Lucky Charms or baked potatoes, etc. to avoid consuming tainted meat.Comment
