Canelo Alvarez signs a 5-year, 11-fight deal worth a minimum of $365 million with DAZN!!

EDIT: The deal also requires Golden Boy to put up 10 "high-caliber fight nights" per year for DAZN.

Added note regarding Wilder/Fury: At least SkySports only charges 20 pounds ($26 US) for a PPV fight.

this is great news and all but i am leery of the quality of fights canelo will have on DAZN.....will they all be against guys like fielding? also interested to see how "high caliber" the fight nights will be. however, i do like the bellator mma streaming deal. i'm definitely signing up now.

and what price is this going for???? $59.99???? there might be some hardcore buys but the casual fan will not pay for this. (i'm not either) neither guy has enough fan base to even garner ppv yet. IF i see it, it will be at a bar (maybe $10-15 bucks or so) if any are even going to show it at all given the popularity of these two fighters to the casual fan. the best bet would be regular showtime for this one and it will set up the winner for a decent ppv vs. joshua.

Man I wouldnt even muster the energy up to go see it somewhere..This would have been an ideal time to showcase both boxers to the casual fan for an anticipated Joshua fight..I think Joshua also did a diservice to himself by fighting on DAZN instead of regular TV..the fight is appealing to hardcore fans but a Joshua vs Wilder fight will not draw a casual fan to spend $70 on it..

Joshua is promoted by Matchroom, which is part of the DAZN group. There's not a chance in hell Eddie Hearn will lose the chance to add DAZN subscriptions by having Joshua fight on a different platform.

I'm definitely keeping my DAZN subscription. $150 CDN for a year.
If you're a football, soccer or MMA fan, this is a steal.

But I have my worries.
With guaranteed cash, how often will stars like Alvarez face stiff competition?
I doubt DAZN wants to invest so much money in both Joshua and Alvarez only to watch them lose early in their contracts.
I think eventually, when the service is able to retain a bevy of top talent, this concern will dissipate.
But I don't think anyone should expect either Alvarez or Joshua to fight dangerous opponents each time out - realistically, this doesn't happen now.
I just hope that at least once a year, the big name fighters will be fighting a true contender.
Joshua needs to fight the winner of Tyson-Wilder next. Just like Alvarez will need to fight the winner of Jacobs-Derevyanchenko.
But I think we all know that once he's done his sparring session with Fielding, he'll face Lemieux on Cinco De Mayo.
We may not see him fight a Charlo, Jacbos or Derevyanchenko until September 2019. Possibly not until 2020.

The dark side of the balkanization of boxing on TV -- broadcasting blackmail -- already is emerging. This is nothing new for the sport, but the problem only is getting worse, at the expense of the fans.

Exactly. Boxing always has been a Wild West cash grab, and these new broadcast deals only will exacerbate that.

Agreed. But to be fair, it's been like this for a while now in regards to promoters only allowing their own fighters to fight one another.
We've seen cross-promotional fights in the past, but it's probably easier pulling a nickel from Bob Arum's pocket.

You only need three: Showtime ($11 per month), DAZN ($10 per month) and ESPN+ ($5 per month). If you drop HBO at $15 per month, then it's a financial push if you're already a Showtime subscriber. That's what I'm going to do.

I don't care about "Game of Thrones" or any other huge HBO shows. Does anyone watch HBO for movies anymore? I watch "Silicon Valley," which isn't as good since T.J. Miller left the show, and "The Deuce." That's it. I can live without both.

The PBC will be the only boxing organization still on PPV through its deal with Showtime if ESPN+ and DAZN get enough subscribers. And what PBC fighter can carry a PPV? Keith Thurman? Danny Garcia? Don't make me laugh while I'm drinking hot tea.

Pacquiao is reportedly the newest Haymon serf, but his days as a PPV draw are over. Deontay Wilder is maybe the only fighter in Haymon's deep but limited stable who could be on PPV, and that's only against Joshua.

Canelo and Anthony Joshua will not be on PPV, as DAZN is a streaming service without PPV. None of Top Rank's guys will be on PPV, as ESPN and ESPN+ are a network and streaming service, respectively. No PPV.

A gradual shift away from the PPV model is good for boxing and its fans. It's happening right now.

As soon as YouTube TV gets MSG (Knicks, baby!) and NFL RedZone, I'm kissing cable goodbye. If Fubo got ESPN, I would switch today, as it already has MSG, NFL RedZone, FS1 and FS2, NBCSN and beIN Sports (soccer, MotoGP). I would be covered.

For most people, Netflix is a borderline utility these days, then you have Amazon Prime, Hulu, your regular cable bill, maybe NFL Sunday Ticket, plus whatever new streaming services get split off in the near future (and they will be split off into their own services soon). Most people are going to be looking at paying for 5-6 different services at the least.

Maybe it's all for the best in the long-run, as I've been longing for a-la carte cable packages for a long time now, but in the short-term, I don't want to keep up with that many different TV services. I'm lazy.

Yea it was but at least their was a gradual build up to big fights to earn casual fans money..but now they are just throwing crap on the wall hoping they have suckers that will pay for it..I still cant believe Floyd made the money he did fighting c level fighters but at least he earned it by taking out people like diego corrales..but Floyd vs Khabib and Wilder vs Fury PPV cmon man..l

Count me as a lazy TV watcher too.
This may sound dumb, but one pet-peeve with using streaming services only is that I don't have a guide to look through.
I like picking up the remote, hitting the guide and seeing all there is to offer.
If someone can come up with an app that would include all these services, it'd make a million.
But as it stands, I don't want to flip from one app to the next trying to find something I want to watch.
On top of that, not all Smart TV's or devices carry apps for each service (HBO Canada for one is only available on Xbox and Samsung TV's).
But the real issue I have is that my wife and kids are useless when trying to navigate through all these options.
My wife can barely turn the TV on for crying out loud and if something goes screwy, like the Wifi dropping, or the app needing to be updated, you may as well ask a chimp to split an atom.
So I'm always getting bugged to fix this, or "Show me again how to watch 'This is Us' from the NBC App"?

What's wrong with that? It's still probably the biggest legitimate fight that can be made in boxing.

The only question is what weight? I can't see Mayweather fighting any heavier than 154, and it would be a real squeeze for Canelo to make that weight and give him an instant excuse after losing.
