The other weekend, I watched two middleweights that looked like lt.heavyweights.
Sure enough, the announcers said they both unofficially weighed 174lbs at the time of the fight.

Boxing should get rid of half the weight classes. If they forced weigh-ins 2 hours prior to the fight, then you'd have guys really fighting in their weight classes and there'd be no need for these dumb catchweights.
Canelo would be a middleweight as would S-Mart, while guys like Ward, Murray, etc, would be light heavyweights where they belong.

All the fighters I deal with here in Ontario have same-day weigh-ins. It's tough on them and most of their managers/promoters want day before.

The biggest reason is probably that the rest of the world does this - so for example when there is a US fighter coming in, sometimes they weigh the day before and have a gentleman's agreement not to exceed 'X' the next day. So they promote and act as if they are fighting in a certain class, but officially to the Ontario commission they are fighting higher.

I wish there was no weight cutting or at least within reason. The problem is I haven't seen a REAL solution - maybe if the whole world went back to same-day weigh-ins, 2 hours is too close to the fight for me though as well. Here they do it at like 10am and fights start at 8pm. It's part of the reason I like Light-heavy, and cruiser divisions because it's not really an issue for the most part.

One thing I will say is that the weight-gain agreement I'm absolutely fine with. If you agree to fight at 147lbs, and put in the contract that you cannot exceed 157lbs it makes sense and in fact it's standard that it's 10lbs from what I've seen. And making it more of a 'rule' might curtain weight cuts being too extreme. Exceeding the 10lbs agreement though has to have SEVERE consequences though, otherwise guys will just break it. How would 50% of your purse be for motivation to stay within?

This is my problem with fighters implementing their own weight limit. If there is going to be a rehydration rule it should be universal. But I guess I see the advantage of doing this via contract since polisy isn't going to change. Didn't they have same day rehydration before? From what I read they got rid of it because fighters would go to the ring dehydrated.

I just caught a couple of interviews, one with Guerrero, and one with his father that border on ridiculous and delusional.

Guerrero's dad is a real piece of work...That whole Mayweather-Guerrero 24-7 (or whatever the Showtime version is called..."All Access"?), I wanted someone to deck Papa Guerrero. He does his son no favors by being such a douche all the time, and it takes a lot to make Floyd seem like the level-headed reasonable one in a press conference.

Everyone always claims Mayweather is 'running' from them because he's a defense-first fighter. Mayweather was there to be hit for the most part; Guerrero just never let his hands go (in large part because he knew the second he got ready to throw, Mayweather would get off first and clock him). I mean, Money hit him with so many right hands his right was swelling up by the end. It's true Guerrero wasn't really "hurt" after the fight, but he was thoroughly outclassed the whole night, and he knew it.

The name of the game is hit and not be hit, if his son was expecting another Berto to stand there and be held and hit, rabbit punched and low blowed for 12 rounds they clearly have never watched a fighter of Mayweather's caliber. Them saying he ran just makes me laugh at them. He can't box and got taken a part by Mayweather and now are looking to save face I guess.

Can we get a Mayweather Sr vs Guerrero Sr? I think he would stop talking if that happened

Those stinging punches Floyd caught him with made him think twice about return fire. What a lame, self serving comment.

Everyone always seems to lament after fighting Floyd that they "should have let (their) hands go more" during the fight, but as you point out, they don't do that during the bout because they know the counter shot is coming faster than they can connect. Tends to make you a bit gun-shy. And when a guy can land a lead right before you can get halfway to your target, that's a real deterrent to letting the fists fly.
