The way the contracts work the UFC decides the fights but the fighters have some choice. Its generally frowned upon to duck fights but the higher up you are the more choices you have.

I'd honestly rather see him fight DC,especially with the way DC has been calling him out. I just find it funny how most folks were hollering about how he should fight DC, now that he wants to fight him that same crowd is singing that "oh,he's ducking the other guy" song.

Jones doesn't have a contract with the UFC as far as I know. I also believe he is free to sign with anyone as he has more than 3 fights after getting the belt.

The UFC needs to say you either fight Gus in this event or you lose your belt. Yes they may need to work on the contract stuff, but they should be able to work that out.

Schedule DC on the same card and let DC, Gus know if Jones doesn't sign before XX date, they fight each for the vacant belt.

Jones is either over valuing himself, he is just now starting to get good PPV numbers, or he is really running from Gus. It would suck, but the UFC does need to call his bluff.

Anderson did this a lot to get more money, but he always ended up taking the fight and always signed once the fight was agreed to.

UFC needs to do 2 things. Start forcing fights or fighters are cut. Doing that will cause backlash, so they need to offer better pay and benefits. I think that would would be 2 wins for the fans, fighters, and UFC.

Thanks, I saw earlier that everyone thought he didn't have a contract.

Should find out Thursday what is happening.

“Asking for an undefeated Olympic wrestler and Strikeforce champion makes me somehow a coward?” How about the fact that I beat Gustafsson already, whether you guys like how close it was or not,” Jones said in a video that has since been deleted. “It’s my career, not yours.”

Either way, I am happy with Gus or DC getting the next shot. But clearly Gus is the #1 contender. DC himself said it a million times that Gus deserves a shot first. Jones is clearly ducking Gus and is probably shook. DC is probably just as tough as a challenge in my mind though.

Also, Cole Miller is out of his fight with McGregor. Diego Brandao will step in.

Dana White is standing his ground and says Gustaffson is next in line.

"As soon as [Jones] starts to build some steam and starts to become the star that you think he can be, he comes out and doesn't want to fight somebody," White said. "You're the champion, you're the pound-for-pound best guy in the world, and he says he wants to be known as the best ever. Well, you don't turn down opponents, you know what I mean?

The real reason Jones is now saying DC is because DC is hurt. He has LCL and possibly ACL issues. Jones previously said DC didn't deserve a fight and now that DC is hurt, Jones is fine with fighting him and he deserves the fight before Gus.

Is there precedent for a guy getting a title another title shot after just one tune up fight? Don't rematches usually involve the champ getting a shot at his belt back? I just don't see what the big deal is. If he beats Cormier and fights Gus next, who cares?

                    edit: duh, Chael.

Urijah Faber is the only one that I can think of off the top of my head, but that was for an interim title because Cruz was injured. Even Chael had to take two fights.

Chael only had to take two fights because Anderson was injured after the Okami fight though. The UFC wanted Chael/Silva 2 to be the New Year's day fight but Silva refused. Also, if it wasnt for Chael's TRT issue in CA he wouldve received an immediate rematch.

I care. He has been saying for months that he doesnt think DC deserves a shot yet. Especially after the Cummins fight but now he beats a pretty shot Henderson and he deserves a shot? I could understand if he was saying that he didnt want to fight Gus in Sweden (what was rumored originally) but to say he doesnt deserve the next shot is ridiculous.

I have a pretty horrible memory and am to lazy to look it up, but didn't JDS get a title shot after one fight as well? And there wasn't any doubt about that one either. Then again HW was really light on contenders at the time.

Precedence in MMA is pointless in my opinion. Often, the way title fights result is after injury and other unforeseen variables. There is no exact science in matchmaking.

I will say this, Cormier definitely deserves a shot too. It's just that the way Jones is clearly ducking Gus is what's bothersome. I'd rather have Dana and company make the matches, not Jones picking and choosing when and who he fights.

Don't get me wrong though, Cormier definitely presents a worthy challenger. He's undefeated and former Strikeforce champ. He's beaten plenty of big names (Nelson, Mir, Barnett and Silva), even though Hendo was on his last legs and Cummins is a nobody.

In an exclusive interview with UFC President Dana White and UFC light heavyweight Jon Jones, it was announced that the rematch between Jones and number one contender Alexander Gustafsson has been set for September 27th.
