      Payout plan restructured

The UFC has revised its policy for how fighters will be paid under a game-changing sponsorship alliance with Canton-based Reebok that is set to begin in July.

The organization initially said fighters would be compensated in tiers based on its internal rankings, a scattershot system decided by an invited, eclectic group of media members.

But after nearly universal criticism, the UFC announced in an April 20 email to fighters that, “Through further review, and in consultation with you, the UFC athletes, UFC made the decision to amend the AOP (Athlete Outfitting Policy) compensation structure, from a rankings-based model to an athlete tenure model.”

The email, signed by UFC CEO Fertitta and the organization’s president, White, stated: “This means that you will be compensated for your compliance with the AOP based on the number of cumulative bouts in which you have fought, rather than your current standing in the UFC rankings. The cumulative bouts will include the upcoming bout for which you are getting compensated.”

The deal also contains higher payouts for champions and title challengers.

The email further states that the UFC will “within the next few weeks” disclose payment tiers. It’s expected to roughly approximate $5,000 for fighters with zero to five UFC fights, $8,000-$10,000 for five to ten fights, $12,000-$15,000 for 11-15 fights, and $18,000-$20,000 for 16-20 fights.

According to the notice, fighters “will also earn royalty revenue from the sale of the products that use the athlete’s name and/or likeness” and that said “royalty payments will be made to fighters based on the terms of their UFC Merchandise Rights Agreement.”

The Reebok pact bans fighters from wearing sponsors they independently secure at UFC events, including on UFC produced content like “Countdown” specials to hype upcoming bouts.

Bridgewater-based UFC stalwart Joe Lauzon has inked the contract that could carry him through the end of his MMA career.Lauzon, who turns 31 next month, signed an eight-fight deal March 23 after a …

Anthony Pettis can't stay healthy for ****. He's injured again, so he's pulled off the Fox card against Myles Jury. Barboza is his replacement.

Looking at the payout numbers, Bellator may become an option for well known fighters that are middle of the road in skills.

Guys are going to be losing money and some of the fighters are not happy. You have to have a lot of fights before you make more than $10,000 and apparently even younger fighters are already making that.

Keep in mind that those were just the Reebok numbers. If fighters get other ufc approved sponsors they can make significantly more money. For example during the last ufc event, there were more than a few fighters who had monster energy and bud light logos.

With that said, the ufc needs to be smart here. They will probably have to make a few more changes to make most of the fighters happy.

I saw something about the UFC reserving a small section for other UFC sponsors, 1 per event, but I thought that money went directly to the UFC to cover the cost of Reebok. Unless I'm missing something, I don't think there are any other approved sponsors for UFC events that goes to the fighters (unless Reebok gives them a contract).

Nah that's old info. Lorenzo mentioned yesterday that fighters can get secondary sponsors as long as they are UFC approved. He mentioned examples like DJ at 186 When he had a Bud Light sponsorship.

With that said I think the whole thing is crap. I can understand that the UFc wants to be a little more uniform but there are tons of fighters who are losing money because of this new uniform deal.

Worst ref ever. Worst corner ever. Hunt was done after round 3 and should have been stopped in that round. Sherdog scored it a 10-7 round. Miocic set the record for strikes 361 and that was with not throwing much in round 5. I think he was going easy on Hunt as he didn't want to kill him. The ref was giving Hunt a lot of room in the 1st 2 rounds because of his history and where the fight was at, but he went overboard after that. It was looking like he wouldn't have stepped in unless he died.

Rest of the card was good for lots of no name/average/or upcomers.

I hope Hunt will have all his faculties when he reaches 50. He has had probably more punishment than Wanderlei considering that he is a heavyweight.

They're really cracking the whip here. 18 months for a first-time weed offense? Good lawd.

I love everything except the weed penalty. Its not going to be worth it for fighters to risk taking PEDs. Losing 3 yrs is pretty much career ending.

Agreed. These are some pretty stiff penalties. The sport has no choice but to clean itself up. We'll still have some guys that **** up, but it should definitely be lessened.

I wonder how much this will affect the in cage performances. If I was a fighter, I would be hesitant to take any supplement fearing that I could get popped for a PED. This will seriously affect training.
