Re: UFC: Aldo vs Pettis - Aug. 3
The UFC hasn't done that though, at least publicly. They need to start doing it. There isn't any other place for them to go now. Bellator can only pay so much money and these guys aren't going to want to fight in a tourney. The UFC can be nice and ask who they want to fight, but if there is a fight that will make money, they should say you are fighting this person on this date. Either show up or don't, its your money and career.Comment

Worst case scenario, they would bench Aldo until he accepted the fight and do a interim belt between Pettis and someone like Lamas.Comment

Re: UFC: Aldo vs Pettis - Aug. 3
When the news was first announced we were all upset because Pettis was jumping weight classes to get a shot. It sounds like that's the same argument Aldo is making. Now we're upset at Aldo for taking the same position most of us initially took? I don't get it.
Heaven forbid a fighter actually speak up for himself and try to take SOME control over the direction of his career. The "shut up and fight" tone some people have is just creepy to me.Last edited by dsallupinyaarea; 02-25-2013, 07:34 AM.NFL - Vikings

Also, that "take control" of your career **** is nonsense. Damn near every title fight the UFC books makes some sense. The majority make sense from a merit perspective where someone has earned their way to a shot. Others make sense from a money perspective (GSP and Sonnen are facing guys who technically dont deserve title shots but are huge draws and will give them the biggest purses of their careers).
Here we have Aldo who didnt seem to have an issue fighting Edgar cutting the line even though he is coming off two straight losses now has an issue with Pettis even though he is a #1 contender at WW and has three straight wins. Are we to believe that Aldo all of a sudden has this change of heart about people earning their title shots since the Edgar fight? Or that he now has an issue fighting someone who will probably be bigger than him and could be a match when it comes to striking?
You know who has complete control of their careers? Floyd and Manny. When that happens we never see the fights we want to see. So put me in the "creepy" shut up and fight contingent if that means we get to see fights we want to see.Comment

Who was upset? I think most of us stated we were excited about the fight. I said it didnt make sense in a match making sense because it leaves LW without a #1 contender and the fight isnt happening until August.

Fair enough on the Aldo point. There may be a bit of ducking involved. I still believe in the integrity of weight classes and the recent trend of jumping around to get a title shot is disturbing to me.
Manny and Floyd make more in 1 fight than any UFC fighter will make in their entire career. They're doing something right.
I just don't like the fact that Dana has 100% control of everything in these guys career and anytime a fighter pushes back, it's met with insane public backlash. These fighters aren't robots for Dana. They're allowed to have opinions.NFL - Vikings

Not to mention Aldo shouldn't and doesn't have a say in who he fights. That's not his job. His job is to fight. I don't see what's so "creepy" about that.Comment

That's pretty narrow considering his chosen profession is that of a mixed martial artist. Where else does an MMA guy go? For all intents and purposes the UFC operates a monopoly.NFL - Vikings

No it doesn't. He could go elsewhere and fight. He needs the UFC, the UFC could go on w/o him. Harsh, but it's reality.Originally posted by MoJust once I'd like to be the one they call a jerk off.Originally posted by MoYou underestimate my lazinessOriginally posted by Mo**** ya

Bellator and the WSOF for one. Both offer decent pay if you want to fight but dont want the UFC telling you who you will fight.Comment
