        Nolan Ryan (7-4) dominated the game as he went 8 innings allowing only 1 run and 2 hits plus struck out 10 in hurling the California Angels to a 4-1 win over the Boston Red Sox in game 1 of a 2 game series. California struck first with single runs in the 1st and 2nd innings on an RBI double by Brian Downing and an RBI ground out by Carney Lansford, respectively. Boston got one of those runs back on a solo HR by Carl Yastrzemski in the 4th before the Angels got 2 more runs off Red Sox starter Luis Tiant (5-5) on a 2-run HR by Don Baylor in the top of the next inning.

        Butch Hobson drove in Jim Rice and George Scott with a 2-out single in the bottom of the ninth off Angels' closer Dave LaRoche (4-1) to give the Boston Red Sox a 9-8 come from behind victory over the California Angels. California's Ken Landreaux was voted player of the game for going 4-5 with 2 RBIs. Brian Downing and Don Baylor each drove in a pair of runs to add support. Rick Burleson went 2-5 with 2 RBIs plus Fred Lynn went 2-4 and Hobson went 2-5 with each driving in 3 runs to pace the Red Sox offense.

        - Team officials announced that the Astros and superstar reliever Ken Forsch have closed a deal that will keep the 31-year old in Houston for another year. Forsch will earn $1,213,000 as part of the settlement.
        6/15 - The Pittsburgh Pirates have reached an agreement with Bert Blyleven to continue as their starting pitcher for another 3 years. The dollar amount was not available at press time.
        6/18 - San Diego's Oscar Gamble has signed a 5-year extention at a pay rate of $3,777,000 per annum.
        6/18 - Flanked by team officials, Frank Tanana announced that he'd agreed to terms with the Angels for $1,840,000 per year. The length of the agreement was not disclosed.
        6/19 - The Reds and Ken Griffey Sr. have come to terms on a $4,520,000 package that will keep the right fielder in town another 2 years.

        - The Baltimore Orioles have sent 31-year old right fielder Ken Singleton to the Philadelphia Phillies in exchange for 26-year old catcher Barry Foote.
        6/18 - The Boston Red Sox have finalized a deal with the Oakland Athletics for the services of 24-year old minor league pitcher John Tudor. In exchange, the Athletics will receive 27-year old pitcher Jim Wright, 21-year old minor league second baseman Tony Bernazard and cash.

                      Cliff Johnson capped a 5-run outburst with a 3-run home run to break a 5-5 tie and give the New York Yankees an 8-5 win over the Boston Red Sox in the first game of a brief 2-game series. Johnson (pog) went 2-4 with a double to go along with the 3-run blast off Boston reliever Allen Ripley (2-7). Reggie Jackson drove in a pair with his 14th HR of the season with White, Spencer and Dyer each driving in one apiece to account for the other New York runs. Burleson, Remy, Scott and Evans each had an RBI for Boston.
