      A combined 16 runs and 7 home runs were in today's game as the Boston Red Sox prevailed over the Texas Rangers in a slugfest, 9-7. Al Oliver was the player of the game, going 3-4 with 1 HR and 2 RBI. Billy Sample and Jim Sundberg each drove in a pair of runs and John Lowenstein had a solo HR to account for the Rangers' runs. Jim Rice drove in 3 runs, 2 on a HR during a 5-run 3rd inning while Carlton Fisk, Dwight Evans and Butch Hobson each had solo HRs to power the Boston attack. Rick Burleson, Jerry Remy and Fred Lynn also each drove in a run for the Red Sox.

      Texas's Al Oliver was the player of the game for the second straight game as he went 3-3, including a solo HR that gave the Rangers an early 1-0 lead, but it wasn't enough as the Red Sox defeated the Rangers, 4-2, to sweep the 2-game series. Mike Hargrove added a solo HR in the 6th to supply the other Rangers' run. Jim Rice went 2-4 and drove in 3 of the 4 Boston runs to lead the Red Sox. Jerry Remy drove in the other Boston run with a single in the 7th inning.

Carl Yastrzemski went 2-3 with a HR and 4 RBI and Jack Brohamer drove in a run with a sac fly. Dan Ford and Mike Cubbage each drove in a pair of runs for the Twins. Rod Carew, Rusty Staub and Hal McRae each drove in a run to account for the other Minnesota runs.

The game was hightlighted by a steal of home plate by Rod Carew in the 9th inning. Larry Wolfe belted a 2-run HR in the 2nd off Boston starter Bill Lee (5-8) that gave Minnesota an early 2-0 lead.

                                Moose Haas (7-11) scattered 5 hits and 2 runs in 8 innings to hurl the Milwaukee Brewers to a 4-2 comeback win over the Boston Red Sox. Boston had led 2-0 on a solo homer and a sac fly by George Scott heading into the 9th inning when the Brewers put runners at the corners with 1 out off Mike Torrez before Bill Campbell (2-2) was summoned to put out the fire. Soup surrendered an RBI double to Danny Goodwin and a 3-run home run to Dave May and took the loss. Ed Farmer came in and pitched a 1-2-3 ninth inning for his 33rd save of the season.

                                Tim Johnson drove in Joe Nolan to break a 3-3 tie in the 11th inning and starter Andy Replogle went 8 innings allowing 2 runs on 5 hits as the Milwaukee Brewers defeated the Boston Red Sox, 4-3, in 11 innings. Nolan, Larry Hisle and Lenn Sakata each drove in a run for Milwaukee to build a 3-1 lead after 4 innings before a solo homer by Butch Hobson in the 7th and a solo blast by Dwight Evans in the bottom of the 9th in his first game back from an injury tied the game. Jerry Remy drove in the other Boston run.

Milt May led the Brew Crew with a pair of 2-run homers and Dave May added a solo shot for Milwaukee. Calton Fisk drove in a pair of runs with Rick Burleson, Fred Lynn and Bob Bailey also driving in a run for Boston.
