    Rick Wise hurled a 2-hit shutout as he led the Cleveland Indians to a 5-0 win over the Boston Red Sox. Cleveland opened the scoring with a solo run in the bottom of the 1st on an RBI double by Andre Thornton. John Grubb drove in a run in the 3rd with a double, followed by an RBI triple by Kuiper in the 4th and a 2-run HR by Mike Vail in the 5th to complete the scoring.

    Wayne Garland threw 3 no-hit innings and went 9 innings allowing 2 runs and 4 hits as he led the Cleveland Indians to a 3-2 win over the Boston Red Sox in 12 innings. Boston opened the scoring with a 2-run triple by Jerry Remy in the top of the 5th before Cleveland answered back with 2 runs of there own in the bottom half on RBI singles by Duane Kuiper and Jim Norris. Mike Vail sent the fans home happy with an RBI single in the last of the 12th off losing pitcher Bill Campbell.

    Fred Lynn went 3-4 and drove in 4 runs, 3 of them with a bases loaded triple in the bottom of the 6th as the Boston Red Sox won the home opener, 6-2, over the Texas Rangers. Dennis Eckersley picked up his second win of the season as he pitched 8 innings allowing 1 run on 5 hits before giving way to Dick Drago to pitch the 9th.

    Fergie Jenkins pitched a complete game but allowed Jim Rice to send the home fans home happy as Rice crushed a 2-run HR in the bottom of the 9th as Boston defeated the Texas Rangers, 2-1. Claudell Washington drove in the Rangers' only run with a solo HR in the top of the 8th to give Texas a 1-0 lead until Rice's heroics in the bottom of the 9th.

    Carl Yastrzemski went 2-4, including a 3-run HR in the bottom of the 8th, to lead the Boston Red Sox to a 13-3 win over the Texas Rangers to sweep the 3-game weekend series. Boston opened the scoring with a 2-run double by Carlton Fisk in the 1st and Bernie Carbo scoring on a double play in the 2nd. Texas came back with 2 runs in the 3rd on an RBI single by Mike Ivie and an RBI ground out by Mike Hargrove. Pat Putnam hit a solo HR in the top of the 6th then the Red Sox exploded for 5 runs in each of the 7th and 8th innings for the winning margin.

    Rusty Staub of the Minnesota Twins was named AL Player of the Week as he batted .458 with 2 HRs and 9 RBIs.
    Ted Simmons of the St.Louis Cardinals was named the NL Player of the Week after batting .500 with 4 HR and 7 RBIs.

          Jim Wright scattered 7 hits, allowing 1 run and striking out 8, and went the distance in pitching the Boston Red Sox to a 3-1 victory over the Milwaukee Brewers. Butch Hobson had a 2-run double in the bottom of the 2nd to start the scoring and Dwight Evans added another run with an RBI single in the bottom of the 8th. Milwaukee avoided the shutout bid with Larry Hisle's solo HR in the 9th.

Milwaukee scored a run in the 7th on an error by Eckersley before Bob Stanley came in and allowed the tying run in the 9th on an RBI single by Robin Yount. In the 10th inning, Don Money drove in the go-ahead run with a single then Ed Farmer pitched a 1-2-3 10th to record the win.

Gorman Thomas hit a 3-run HR in the 1st and Larry Hisle added a solo HR in the 3rd as the Brewers opened a 4-0 lead and never looked back.

          Butch Hobson scored on a bases loaded wild pitch by Sid Monge with one out in the bottom of the 14th to give the Boston Red Sox a 6-5 win over the Cleveland Indians in the opening game of a 4-game weekend series. Dwight Evans hit a 2-run HR in the 2nd to give Boston a 3-0 lead before Cleveland tied the game on a solo HR by Johnny Grubb in the 4th plus an RBI single by Grubb and a sac fly by Gary Matthews in the 6th. The Red Sox came back with 2 runs in the bottom of the 6th on a solo HR by Jim Rice and an RBI single by George Scott. Bob Stanley came in in relief of starter Jim Wright and blew his second straight save as he allowed a pair of runs in the 9th to tie the game at 5-5. Johnny Grubb was named the player of the game with his 2-6, 2 RBI performance. Carl Yastrzemski left the game in the top of the 9th after making a diving catch. He is listed as day-to-day.

The Red Sox added 3 more in the 6th on a pair of bases loaded walks by Rick Burleson and Jim Rice then a groundout by Carlton Fisk. The Indians avoided the shutout with an RBI single by Alfredo Griffin in the 9th.

          Butch Hobson went 3-5 with a 3-run HR in the 2nd to lead the Boston Red Sox to an 11-2 win in the opening game of the double header over the Cleveland Indians. Hobson also drove in a run in the 5th with a double that knocked Cleveland starter Rick Waits out of the game. Jim Rice, Fred Lynn and Fred Kendall each hit home runs as the Red Sox battered the Indians' pitchers for 11 runs and 16 hits.

          April 23 (game 2)

          Andre Thornton (pog) went 3-4 with a solo HR to pace the Cleveland attack but to no avail as the Boston Red Sox took a 3-2 lead in the bottom of the 5th on solo HRs by Fred Lynn and Butch Hobson and defeated the Indians, 4-3, to sweep the 4-game series. Bill Lee got the win as he pitched 8 innings of 5-hit ball and allowing two runs. Cleveland pulled to within one in the 9th off Dick Drago on a single by Alfredo Griffin but Mike Vail was thrown out at third base on a relay by Jerry Remy from Dwight Evans for the final out of the game.

          - St.Louis's Rob Dressler was confirmed to miss 6 weeks with a strained rotator cuff muscle.

                    George Scott went 2 for 4, driving in 2 runs, to lead the Boston Red Sox over the Milwaukee Brewers, 5-4. Boston opened up the scoring on a solo HR by Dwight Evans in the 3rd then added 3 more runs in the 4th on RBI singles by George Scott and Butch Hobson plus an RBI double by Fred Lynn. Milwaukee got a run back on a solo blast by Don Money but the Red Sox answered back as George Scott drove in Jerry Remy with a single to retake a 4-run lead. Boston starter Mike Torrez surrendered solo HRs to Cecil Cooper and Paul Molitor in the 6th and 8th innings before exiting the ball game. Bob Stanley made things interesting in the bottom of the 9th as he allowed 2 singles to put runners on the corners with 1 out then allowed a ground out by Robin Yount to drive in Jim Gantner to pull the Brewers to within one.

Boston opened the scoring with an RBI single by Bernie Carbo in the 2nd then Texas' Jim Sundberg belted a 2-run HR in the bottom of the inning to give them the lead. The Rangers added two more runs on a ground out by Billy Sample in the 5th and a solo HR by Mike Ivie in the 6th, his second of the series. Jim Rice hit a solo HR in the 8th to round out the scoring as Len Barker shut the Bosox down in the 9th to record his first save of the season.

Rick Burleson drove in Butch Hobson with a single for the winning run. The Red Sox started the scoring in the 6th inning as Rick Burleson singled in Butch Hobson. The Orioles tied the game in the top of the 9th on a solo HR by Doug DeCinces to send the game into extra innings.

Nelson Briles allowed only two hits over 7 shutout innings and picked up his first win of the season. Eddie Murray hit his 4th HR of the season in the 2nd inning to start the rout and the other two runs were scored on a sac fly by Bumbry and a throwing error by Carlton Fisk on a stolen base attempt by Rich Garcia, both in the 9th inning.

After Minnesota took a 2-1 lead on a solo HR by Roy Smalley and a sac fly by Hoskin Powell, Boston scored 3 runs in the bottom of the 7th to take the lead on RBI singles by Fred Lynn, Bernie Carbo and Rick Burleson. Jim Rice added an insurance run in the 8th on his 6th HR of the season. Bad luck occured in the bottom of the 7th as Yaz was strained his calf muscle while scoring the tying run.

The Twins took a 4-0 lead on a solo HR in the 4th then the Red Sox scored a solo run in the last of the 4th on a double by Carlton Fisk and tied the game in the last of the 6th on an RBI groundout by Carlton Fisk and a 2-run HR by Fred Lynn before Remy's heroics in the 7th.

The White Sox broke the 1-1 tie in the 6th on an RBI single by Alan Bannister then the Red Sox took a 3-2 lead in the last of the 7th on RBI singles by Jerry Remy and Jim Rice.

Boston starter Mike Torrez lasted only 3 1/3 innings, giving up 4 runs on 8 hits and took the loss. Steve Stone allowed 4 runs and 6 hits in 8 innings to pick up his second win of the season. Chet Lemon aided Nordhagen as he drove in a pair of runs and Bob Molinaro went 4-5 with a stolen base to help the Chicago cause.

Boston starter Luis Tiant (2-3) lasted 4 1/3 innings, allowing 6 hits and 7 runs, 5 earned, to take the loss. After an RBI single by Jim Rice in the bottom of the 1st, an RBI single by Jorge Orta and a solo HR by Bob Molinaro gave the Pale Hose a 2-1 lead before the flood gates opened in the 5th. A throwing error by El Tiante allowed the White Sox to load the bases before a bals and an RBI single by Ralph Garr chaced Tiant from the game.

                                Jim Rice belted a 2-run HR in the bottom of the 8th to erase a 4-3 deficit and give the Boston Red Sox a 5-4 win over the Kansas City Royals in the first of a 2-game series. The Royals got off to a quick 3-0 lead as Porter hit a 2-run HR in the 1st and U.L.Washington singled in a run in the 2nd. The Red Sox got on the board in the 4th on a solo HR by Rick Burleson and an RBI single from Carlton Fisk. The teams traded runs as Kansas City got an RBI single from Porter in the 5th and Boston got a sac fly by George Scott in the 6th. Darrell Porter was the POG as he went 2-4 with a HR and 3 RBIs.

                                George Brett (POG) went 2-5 with a HR and 3 RBIs to lead the Kansas City Royals to an 8-2 win over the Boston Red Sox to split the 2-game series. Marty Pattin pitched 4 1/3 innings of 5-hit, shutout ball to pick up the win. The Royals battered Boston start Allen Ripley for 6 runs on 8 hits before he was lifted with 1 out in the top of the 5th.

Carlton Fisk went 2-5 and drove in 3 of the 5 Boston runs to lead the hitting attack. Dwight Evans added an RBI double and Jerry Remy had a sac fly in the 5th. Dave Cash drove in the lone Baltimore run with a sac fly in the 3rd inning.

                                Jack Brohamer (pog) belted a pinch hit grand slam in the top of the 7th inning off Minnesota reliever Dave Johnson to erase a 3-0 deficit as the Boston Red Sox defeated the Minnesota Twins, 6-5, to take the last game of the 3-game series and avoid being swept. Tom Burgmeier went 2 2/3 innings in relief of Boston starter Bill Lee and picked up the win. Dick Drago came on after a 2-run HR by Larry Wolfe with 1 out in the bottom of the ninth and preserved the win to pick up his third save of the season.
