Cubs, Pelicans sign Player Development Contract

Iconic team moves affiliate to iconic destination
By Nathan Barnett / Myrtle Beach Pelicans

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - The Myrtle Beach Pelicans are pleased to announce that the team has reached an agreement on a player development contract with the Chicago Cubs for two years, encompassing the 2015 and 2016 seasons.

"The Cubs are an iconic national brand," remarked Pelicans General Manager and Vice-President Andy Milovich. "The success of our business is determined by fan interest, the quality of baseball, and the impact on Myrtle Beach from a tourism perspective. The Chicago Cubs present an incredible partnership in every aspect. The Cubs strengthen the Pelicans brand in a way that few, if any, other major league franchises could. Cubs fans can now visit their future stars in one of the iconic vacation destination spots in the US."

The Cubs are the oldest currently active American professional sports franchise playing in their original city. They play at Wrigley Field, the oldest ballpark in the National League and second oldest in Major League Baseball.

"Having our local baseball team linked with a truly national franchise that has as rich of a history as the Chicago Cubs is a great feat for the Myrtle Beach area," said Brad Dean, president and CEO of the Myrtle Beach Area Chamber of Commerce. "A growing number of our visitors are from the Chicago area, and this affiliation will link our community to the hopes of Cubs fans across the country."

The Myrtle Beach area of South Carolina consistently proves that it is worthy of the moniker "The Grand Strand" year-after-year. It continues to win prestigious awards ranging from being designated as one of "Best Family Vacation Spots," according to FlipKey, to its boardwalk being recognized as one of the "Best Boardwalks for Food across the USA," according to USA Today.

"From a baseball standpoint, the Cubs currently stand alone as far as minor league talent," added Milovich. "The players in their system position us well to get us back to the Mills Cup Championship Series and hopefully see our players move on to be a part of a World Series run as well."

The Cubs boasted one of the top farm systems entering 2014 and strengthened their core of young talent through a series of trades during the season. Keith Law of ESPN re-ranked organizations in late July and put the Cubs in top spot in all of baseball in terms of minor league talent.

The Kane County Cougars, the Cubs' affiliate in 2014 at Class-A, one rung below the Class A-Advanced level, won the Midwest League Championship and went a club-record 91-49, the best record in full-season minor league baseball this season.

"We are excited to reach an agreement with Myrtle Beach and begin working with Chairman Chuck Greenberg and General Manager and Vice President Andy Milovich," said Jason McLeod, the Cubs Senior Vice President, Scouting and Player Development. "Myrtle Beach is a well-respected franchise that will serve as a beneficial destination for our young players. We look forward to developing a successful relationship with the franchise and community."

The Cubs organization features a number of former Pelicans, including four players who have had big league time this season. Justin Grimm, Mike Olt, and Neil Ramirez, who were on the 2011 Pelicans club, all have played with the Cubs this season. Kyle Hendricks, who pitched for the Birds in 2012, won National League Rookie of the Month in August.

The Cubs Class A-Advanced affiliate had been the Daytona Cubs in the Florida State League from 1993 until now.

For the past four seasons, the Pelicans have been an affiliate of the Texas Rangers. Prior to that, Myrtle Beach spent 12 seasons as an Atlanta Braves Advanced-A affiliate, from the inaugural 1999 season through 2010.

"We want to thank the Texas Rangers for the last four years," added Milovich. "They were a great partner with us and provided tremendous talent on the field. They are world-class people on and off the diamond."

The Pelicans plan on hosting a press conference regarding the affiliation change at a later date. More details on this event are forthcoming.

Season tickets and mini plans for the upcoming 2015 season are on sale now. For information and tickets on seeing the future Cubs play with the Pelicans in 2015, contact the Pelicans Front Office at 843-918-6002.

Birds Hat Alt.jpg Stockton Ports MiLB 59FIFTY.jpg
Myrtle Beach Pelicans (0-0, FIRST HALF CHAMPS) vs Stockton Ports (0-0)

Pelicans and Ports split four game set in Myrtle Beach

GAME THREE : Pitching matchup: Myrtle Beach- Victor Payano (5-3, 5.48), Stockton- Manny Correa (6-3, 4.50)

GAME FOUR : Pitching matchup: Myrtle Beach- Chad Bell (1-0, 3.28), Stockton- Michael Ynda (0-10, 9.79)

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - The Myrtle Beach Pelicans, Class A-Advanced affiliate of the Texas Rangers through the rest of this season before becoming a full-time member of the Chicago Cubs organization next season wouldn't be saved by a "Diamond" David Lyon (C) 3-run homer in game 3 of the series in Myrtle Beach against the Stockton Ports, but the team would rebound quickly the next night, tying the series at 2 games a-piece.

      20140807_181114.jpg
"Diamond Dave" sparks the lone highlight of the game for Myrtle Beach in game 3 of the 4-game set in Myrtle Beach against Stockton

In game one, Stockton scored 2 runs a-piece in each of the 1st, 3rd and 6th innings. The a-for-mentioned 3-run David Lyon homer did give Myrtle Beach a 3-2 lead in the 2nd but that was the only lead the Pelicans would have all night. The birds would threaten a bottom of the 9th comeback but they'd only get one run after having two men on and nobody out.

FINAL SCORE: Myrtle Beach 4, Stockton 6

In game two, the Pelicans got revenge in a big way, scoring 11 times in front of a crowd of 1,523 in Myrtle Beach.

Myrtle Beach first baseman for the evening, David Lyon (hot streak) again had a big game for the 2nd game in a row against Stockton, going 2-4 while driving in 2 runs and scoring twice. Catcher Jorge Alfaro also had a nice day at the dish, getting three hits in five plate appearances while driving in three runs. The Pelicans got solid starting pitching in game four, something they did not get in game three. Game four starter, lefty Chad Bell, went 7.2 innings, allowing 7 hits and four runs while walking 2 and striking out 6. Compared to game 3 starter, lefty Victor Payano, who would only last 3.2 innings and giving up 8 hits, skipper C-Massey was pleased that his bullpen didn't have to work as hard in game four.

1B/C David Lyon comes through with a big performance for the 2nd time in two days against the Stockton Ports

FINAL SCORE: Myrtle Beach 11, Stockton 4

As a Reds fan, it sure will be interesting to be having a franchise with the Cubs organization. Equally as strange for me, will be owning season tickets to watch the guys that will be hurting my Reds in the future!

Myrtle Beach Pelicans (1-1, FIRST HALF CHAMPS) vs Lancaster JetHawks (0-2)

Pelicans and JetHaws split first two games of the final series before the all-star break; Westwood hurls CP shutout in game one

GAME ONE : Pitching matchup: Myrtle Beach- Sam Wolff (4-6, 6.00), Lancaster- Kyle Westwood (7-5, 4.44)

GAME TWO : Pitching matchup: Myrtle Beach- Cody Buckel (8-2, 2.83), Lancaster- Lance McCullers (4-4, 7.09)

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - The Myrtle Beach Pelicans, Class A-Advanced affiliate of the Texas Rangers faced a dominate pitching performance by Lancaster starter Kyle Westwood in game one of the four game set in sunny Myrtle Beach. Westwood won Bojangles' Player of The Game honors by scattering 7 hits, only allowing one walk, while keeping Pelican hitters off balance and working 9 strikeouts.
            Bos small.png

Hours before the game started, Myrtle Beach obtained bullpen reinforcements as right handed pitcher Josh McElwee arrived from single-A Hickory. He was clearly nervous when he entered the ballgame in the 9th inning with the Pelicans down 3-0. He had control issues and just didn't look comfortable on the bump, allowing 3 runs on 3 hits and a walk with the bases loaded. "It's okay. With young guys like him, just getting their feet wet at a new level, you just need to stick with them when the times are tough. At this level, it's all about player development. It wasn't hurting us, because we weren't scoring any runs anyway", said a frustrated C. Massey following his team's 6-0 shutout.

Sam Wolff wasn't much better, only going 4.1 innings, while allowing 4 hits and 3 earned runs. He also walked 3 batters and struck out 4.

            Final Score.jpg
            Myrtle Beach 0, Lancaster 6

In game two, the Pelicans jumped all over Lancaster starter Lance McCullers early, scoring 5 runs in the first inning. Myrtle Beach starter and ace, Cody Buckel only allowed 2 hits through the first 4 innings but got hammered in the fifth inning, giving up 6 runs on 6 hits and a walk before getting yanked by fill-in manager Kenny Powers. Powers is filling in for Massey, as he was given a vacation for the remainder of the Lancaster series as a reward for the team winning the first half championship.

            20140811_202133.jpg
Star outfielder Nick Williams is nearing a call up to AA, but that wouldn't affect his power swing as he lifted a 2-run home run in the 6th inning against Lancaster

The birds would be okay, as they got 2 runs a-piece in the 4th and 6th innings and would go on to win by 3 runs, thanks to some impressive bullpen work by Sam Stafford, Justin Sprenger, and Abel De Los Santos. The trio combined to allow 3 hits over 4 innings to get Cody Buckel his 9th victory of the season. While nothing is official, it's known around the league that Buckel will probably be starting in the upcoming all-star game for the Carolina League, against tomorrow's starter for Lancaster, Josh Hader, who looks for win #11 tomorrow night in Myrtle Beach. The two starters are the leading vote-getters right now in their respected leagues with the all-star game just days away.

            Final Score.jpg
            Myrtle Beach 9, Lancaster 6

Myrtle Beach Pelicans (2-2, FIRST HALF CHAMPS) vs Lancaster JetHawks (1-3)

Pelicans defeat Lancaster's ace in game 3, walk-off in game 4, take 3 of 4 at home against JetHawks

GAME THREE : Pitching matchup: Myrtle Beach- Luis Parra (4-3, 3.80), Lancaster- Josh Hader (10-1, 3.47)

GAME FOUR : Pitching matchup: Myrtle Beach- Victor Payano (5-4, 5.72), Lancaster- Mark Appel (0-2, 5.14)

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - The Myrtle Beach Pelicans, Class A-Advanced affiliate of the Texas Rangers finished off the 4-game set at home against Lancaster in style, with a Jorge Alfaro walk-off base hit. We'll get to that in a moment, but first, game three of the series.

              20140811_204638.jpg
Christopher "Boom" Bostick, 2B for the Myrtle Beach Pelicans, showed once again why all the ladies call him "Mr. Boom Bostick" with this solo shot in the 4th inning off of Lancaster All-Star Josh Hader

For the second straight night, an ace in Myrtle Beach headed for the all-star game got roughed up. This time it was Lancaster's turn, but unfortunatly, for Hader, unlike Cody Buckel last night, he was dealt the loss, his 2nd of the season. Pelicans' starter Luis Parra had his worst start in recent memory and Josh Hader had his worst start all season. Together, the two starters gave up 17 hits, 4 walks, and 9 runs. Neither pitcher made it through five innings of work. Myrtle Beach got big nights out of the middle of the lineup, especially in 2B Christopher Bostick and CF/LF Zach Cone, who both homered. Bostick got a solo shot in the 4th and Cone drove in 2 runs with a 2-RBI dinger in the 5th. Right hander Josh MeClewee came on for the save in the 9th, gettig a double play to lock up the "W" for the birds.

FINAL SCORE: Myrtle Beach 7, Lancaster 6

Game four, the final game before the all-star break and the final game of the 4-game series between the Lancaster JetHawks and Myrtle Beach Pelicans in Myrtle Beach, SC, was a tight ballgame thorough, but the Pelicans were able to pull off a thrilling victory, scoring 3 runs in the final 2 innings for the comeback victory.

The JetHawks of Lancaster would get to Myrtle Beach starter Victor Payano very early, starting with a 2-run HR in the first and ending when Payano walked the bases loaded, then walked in a run. Kenny Powers, managing the Pelicans in place of skipper C. Massey who was awarded vacation time for his team's first half performance, was obligated by the Rangers organization to get Payano to 75 pitches regardless of the trouble he got in to, which allowed Victor to stay in the ballgame a couple batters later than he should have.

              20140811_214118.jpg
Speedy outfielder Chris Garia doesn't show off his power as much as he did at the start of the season, but he sure displayed it well here, a 2-run bomb against Lancaster in game four of a four game series at home in Myrtle Beach

Once he was pulled, however, the Myrtle Beach bullpen went on lock-down mode and didn't allow Lancaster back on the scoreboard. After catcher David Lyon got a sac-fly in the 7th inning to get the Pelicans on the board, LF Chris Garia hit a 2-run jack the following inning making the score 5-3, the way it'd stay until the 8th. Myrtle Beach got CLUTCH doubles from Lyon and SS Luis Mendez, with Luis' falling JUST inside the foul line. Here's a look at it:

              20140811_214801.jpg

In the bottom of the ninth, with two outs, and Vickerson on first, 1B for the evening Jorge Alfaro drove in the winning runner Vickerson to wrap up the Pelicans victory and send Myrtle Beach in to the All-Star break hot.

FINAL SCORE: Myrtle Beach 6, Lancaster 5

The game-reporting greatness had to start somewhere.

I'm at my childhood home in North Carolina, visiting my family currently. I stumbled upon this in my bed room. I was 10 years old already doing reports on football video games. Here's one from Madden 2002 on the computer.

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - The Myrtle Beach Pelicans, the Class A-Advanced affiliate of the Chicago Cubs, announced on Tuesday that the Myrtle Beach High School Baseball Team will adopt the Pelicans "MB" cap logo. The logo will be updated to match the Seahawks' color scheme and will be featured on the team's game caps.

"We're very excited to work with Tim Christy and the Myrtle Beach Seahawks," stated Pelicans Vice President and General Manager Andy Milovich. "We view this partnership as an extension of our Play it Forward Community Initiative and an opportunity to invest in the game of baseball. Tim has been very supportive of the Pelicans since I arrived. He's assisted the Pelicans in securing bullpen catchers, throwing batting practice and directing players and coaches on local fishing holes, while furnishing poles and tackle. He's a real community asset and we're thrilled to work with him on an endeavor that grows both of our brands."

The idea of incorporating the Pelicans mark into the Seahawks' uniforms was presented to Milovich by Seahawks Head Coach Tim Christy.

"The Pelicans are a huge part of the baseball culture at the beach," stated Christy. "We are very excited to be able to adopt a small part of who they are. They are a class organization from top to bottom."

A finalized design of the new Seahawks hat is shown above.

Season tickets and mini plans for the upcoming 2015 season are on sale now. For information and tickets on seeing the future Cubs play with the Pelicans in 2015, contact the Pelicans Front Office at 843-918-6002.

Yeah, but even at 10 you were a better speller than 90% of the internet is now. You even got Daunte Culpepper's name right! I don't really see anything wrong in your Panthers-Vikings writeup aside from the of/off thing. Again, 90% of the internet does plenty of stuff worse than you at 10 years old, lol. Props to your folks and elementary school teachers.

Your/you're and there/their/they're usage is basically a rubik's cube to a lot of people who write things on the internet. Don't get me started on using apostrophes for pluralization (guys vs guy's) or to/too/two usage, lol. And we're talking grown adults here, who can vote and raise children, but yet can't/don't learn this stuff.

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - The Carolina League announced the All-Star roster for the California League / Carolina League All-Star Game presented by Bank of America on Wednesday. The Myrtle Beach Pelicans are excited to announce that eight Pelicans have been selected to represent the Carolina League. Catchers Jorge Alfaro and David Lyon, infielders Preston Beck and Joey Gallo (who made the team but is currently in AA and won't play in the all-star game), outfielder Zach Cone, and pitchers Cody Buckel, Jose Leclerc, and Jose Monegro all made the team. Alfaro and Buckel were selected as starters, with Preston Beck just on the outside looking in. The Pelicans have more players selected than any other team. The game will take place at 7:05 p.m. on June 17 in Wilmington, Delaware at Frawley Stadium, the home of the Wilmington Blue Rocks.

Alfaro, 20, is in his fifth professional season and is one of the top prospects in the Rangers system. Ranked by MLB.com as the number one ranked player and by Baseball America as the number two prospect in the Rangers system, Alfaro is hitting .315 with three homers and 40 RBI. He hit safely in nine straight games in May, and is coming off a homestand in which he hit safely in seven straight at bats. The Sincelejo, Columbia native is third among qualifying catchers in caught stealing percentage, throwing out 35.5% of attempted basestealers (11-31) and the 31 attempts against him are the lowest in the league among qualifying players. Alfaro was selected to the All-Star Futures Game at Citi Field in New York last season but could not attend due to injury; this is his first minor league All-Star selection, and lead all catchers in votes.

Beck, 23, is in his third professional season and first as a first baseman. An outfielder in college at the University of Texas at Arlington and in 2012 and 2013 as a Rangers farmhand, Beck has played the majority of his games at first base this season, logging 35 of his 46 starts there. Currently, the Dallas, Texas native is batting .308 with a career high eight home runs, along with 44 RBI. He is third on the team on-base percentage (.359). This is his first professional All-Star selection.

Gallo, 20, earns his second straight trip to his league's Midseason All-Star game, however he will not be active for the game because he's now an active member of the Frisco Roughriders and should be in the Texas League All-Star game here in just a few days. The slugger was a South Atlantic Midseason and Postseason All-Star selection last year. After leading the minors in home runs last year with 40, the Henderson, Nevada native was on pace for a 52-home run season with 21 long balls through 56 games. He leads the Carolina League in home runs, RBI (48), runs scored (51), walks (50), total bases (134), on-base percentage (.466), extra-base hits (32), and slugging percentage (.753). He is first among active minor leaguers in homers, slugging percentage, walks, and OPS (1.219). He had won the Carolina League Player of the Week on three occasions this year and won Texas Rangers Minor League Player of the Month in April.

The Carolina League coaching staff consists of the manager and pitching coach from the hosting Blue Rocks. Darryl Kennedy will manage the club and Steve Luebber will serve as an assistant.

Myrtle Beach continues their road trip on Wednesday night at 7:05 p.m. against the Inland Impire 66ers.

The next Pelicans home game is a week from now when the Pelicans play the first of three against the 66ers. Friday night is Military Appreciation Night, presented by Embrace Hospice, WRNN Hot Talk, and WMBF News and features a card-set of local veterans.

Season Seats, Mini Plans, Flex Books, and single game tickets are available to see the Pelicans in 2014. For more information on tickets, please call (843) 918-6002, e-mail [email protected], visit www.MyrtleBeachPelicans.com, or visit the Pelicans box office, which is open Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
