Myrtle Beach Pelicans (38-23) vs Stockton Ports (23-38)

Late game double by Bolinger clinches Pelican's 6th straight "W"

Pitching matchup: Myrtle Beach- Andrew Faulkner (0-1, 4.58), Stockton- Michael Ynda (0-9, 10.20)

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - The Myrtle Beach Pelicans, Class A-Advanced affiliate of the Texas Rangers got a couple clutch doubles in the 8th and 9th innings to prevail in a 2-run ballgame yesterday evening at Banner Island Ballpark in Stockton, CA.

The home-town Stockton Ports wanted to strike first against the Class A-Advanced affiliate of the Texas Rangers, the Myrtle Beach Pelicans, after the previous game's blowout, and they did so successfully off of Myrtle Beach lefty-starter Andrew Faulkner. Ports' catcher Ryan Gorton would put his team on the board in the 2nd inning with a solo shot to lead off the inning, and it was the only run either team would score until the middle innings.

In the fifth inning, Myrtle Beach got two runs of their own from back to back 2 out RBI base knocks by Luis Mendez (SS) and Jorge Alfaro (C). The Pelicans would get 5 hits in their half of the inning.

Unfortunately for Massey's Myrtle Beach squad, Stockton also got 5 hits in the inning, and 3 runs to boot, all off Faulkner. 4-2, Ports.

3B Nick Vickerson would bring the birds within one run in the 6th inning with a 2-out RBI single, and from that point forward Myrtle Beach took control of the action.

      Bos small.png
THE BOJANGLES PLAY OF THE GAME took place in the 8th inning when Pelican outfielder Royce Bolinger doubled to center, driving in two runs, giving the birds a 1-run lead.

Royce! Bolinger! The Pelican outfielder drives in the tying and go-ahead run Wednesday night for the Rangers single-A farm team

The top of inning #9 saw #4 Texas Rangers prospect Nick Williams connect for a RBI double, his second of the game, this one scoring DH for the evening, Edwin Garcia, and sealing the win for the Pelicans.

      Pelican Standouts
      SP- Andrew Faulkner: 4.2 IP, 10 H, 4 ER, 2 BB, 5 K
      3B- Nick Vickerson: 2-4, 1 R, 1 RBI

Joey Gallo, 2014 Carolina League MVP

        Gallo MVP.jpg

Joey Gallo has been named the Carolina League MVP for the 2014 season

To say Gallo was dominant in his 58 games for the Pelicans would be an understatement...he put up a .323/.463/.735 line that included 21 home runs, and catapulted himself from a fringe top-100 prospect to a consensus top 20 prospect in the game.

The Pelicans have the best record in the Carolina League.

Pitching matchup: Myrtle Beach- Victor Payano (5-2, 4.98), Stockton- Bobby Wahl (0-2, 4.06)

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - The Myrtle Beach Pelicans, Class A-Advanced affiliate of the Texas Rangers couldn't stretch the win streak to seven games on Thursday night, falling on the road on the west coast.

In the top of the first, Pelican's second baseman Christopher Bostick homered to left to give Myrtle Beach an early 1-0 lead.

Between the 4th and 5th innings, Myrtle Beach got an RBI single from DH Kevin Torres and an RBI double from red-hot outfielder Zach Cone, who's trying to make a run at a spot on the all-star team.

That was nice, but nothing compared to what the home team would get in 3 innings combined.

In the bottom of the 4th, 5th, and 6th innings, the Ports would collect 11 hits, 9 runs, draw 3 walks, and mash 2 bombs and go on to win by 6 runs, deflating Pelican nation for one night.

            Pelican Standouts
            SP- Victor Payano: 4.1 IP, 6 H, 6 ER, 3 BB, 3 K

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - The Myrtle Beach Pelicans, Class A-Advanced affiliate of the Texas Rangers may be ready to start their next win streak after a victory last night in Stockton, California. The game was game four, the final game of the series.

Myrtle Beach 1B Preston Beck got things going in the top of the 1st inning with two outs, a solo homer that can be viewed BELOW:

Myrtle Beach first baseman Preston Beck homers in the first inning, his first of 3 RBIs in the game against Stockton

Myrtle Beach starting pitcher, ace Cody Buckel would give up 2 runs in the bottom half of the first, with one of the runs un-earned after 3B Edwin Garcia made a costly fielding error.

In the top of the 4th inning and the Pelicans down 1 run, the road team loaded up the bases and scored 2 runs on 3 hits and 2 walks, giving Myrtle Beach a 3-2 lead.

Preston Beck wasn't done putting runs on the scoreboard for Myrtle Beach after the solo home run in the first. With two outs in the top of the sixth, Beck doubled down the left field line, driving in two runs for the Birds. 5-2.

Outfielder Zach Cone would put the icing on the cake for the Pelicans in the top of the ninth with a 2-run moon shot to center, following a Stockon Ports' defensive miscue.

Myrtle Beach Pelicans (40-24, 1st place) vs Lancaster JetHawks (37-27, 2nd place)

Lancaster takes the first two games of the four game set in Myrtle Beach, sweeping Saturday's double header

Astros Minor League Player of the Month for May, Ronnie Mitchell

GAME ONE : Pitching matchup: Myrtle Beach- Sam Wolff (4-4, 5.70), Lancaster- Josh Hader (9-1, 3.20)

GAME TWO : Pitching matchup: Myrtle Beach- Chad Bell (1-0, 2.95), Lancaster- Mark Appel (0-2, 4.42)

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - The Myrtle Beach Pelicans, Class A-Advanced affiliate of the Texas Rangers couldn't find a way to win on Saturday at home in two chances against the 2nd place Lancaster JetHawks, who are closing in on Myrtle Beach's division lead with just a few games remaining until the first half champion is crowned and a playoff birth is born for one of the two squads.

In game one, Myrtle Beach starter Sam Wolff would go 4.1 innings, allowing 8 hits, and 5 earned runs while striking out 5 JetHawk batters. The Pelican's bullpen wasn't much better, in particular lefty- Sam Stafford, who in the 9th inning gave up a 2-run homer to center to Lancaster CF Ronnie Mitchell.

The Pelicans would get home runs by OF Zach Cone, who went 2-4, and INF Edwin Garcia, who went 2-3, but Myrtle Beach would still fall at the claws of the JetHawks.

                  Final Score.jpg
                  Myrtle Beach 3, Lancaster 8

In game two, The Pelicans got much better starting pitching than the first match up of the evening, out of lefty-starter Chad Bell, who's new to the rotation. Bell would go on to pitch 87 pitches in 6.1 innings of work, giving up 4 hits and 3 earned runs, while only walking one batter and striking out 6. The home-town Pelicans would have big days from OF Zach Cone (3-5, 2B, 1 RBI), 2B Christopher "Boom" Bostick (2-5, 2B, 1 R, 1 RBI), and 1B Preston Beck (3-4, 1 R, 1 RBI), but their efforts still wouldn't be able to save the Myrtle Beach Birds on this night because of a bullpen implosion and a critical mishap by CF Nick Williams.

The Myrtle Beach bullpen didn't perform well at all when they were needed most as Justin Sprenger, Sam Stafford, Jason Knapp, and Jose Leclerc all combined to allow 5 hits and 3 runs in just 2.2 innings.

Myrtle Beach starter Andrew Faulkner needed to pitch a great game, and did, with 2nd place Lancaster trying to catch Myrtle Beach with the first half championship battle coming to a close soon

Pitching matchup: Myrtle Beach- Andrew Faulkner (0-1, 4.91), Lancaster- Vincent Velasquez (3-6, 4.21)

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - The Myrtle Beach Pelicans, Class A-Advanced affiliate of the Texas Rangers won a thriller Sunday night.

The game started off quickly with a first pitch double by RF Zach Cone to kick off the bottom of the first inning in style. With two outs, a red hot Preston Beck (1B) would drive him in, giving the Pelicans an early 1-0 lead.

In the top of the 2nd, Myrtle Beach starter Andrew Faulkner gave up a game-tying solo shot off the bat of OF Tanner Mathis. Lancaster would pick up another run in the top of the forth inning from a sac fly, and the 'Hawks would lead by one run going to the bottom of inning 7 where we pick up the next bit of action.

With one away in the inning, LF Nick Williams grounded to right for a single, which finally chased Lancaster starter Vincent Velasquez, whom the Pelicans had a hard time with all night. Manager Massey decided to play for the tie and have his utility infielder Luis Mendez put down a sac bunt, which worked to perfection and it paid off as next batter, the new, young Myrtle Beach sensation Lewis Brinson (CF) singled in the tying run. Here's a quick look at Brinson:

                    20140726_211822.jpg
Texas Rangers #8 prospect Lewis Brinson has grown up quick since his call up to Myrtle Beach. Here, he ties the game with a single against 2nd place Lancaster in an important match up

Skipping forward to the bottom of the 9th inning. After 1B Preston Beck struck out to start the half inning, 3B Edwin Garcia picked up a single to put the winning run on first base. With the score tied at 2 a-piece, Nick Williams who singled earlier in the ballgame, flew out. With two away now in the bottom of the ninth, utility infielder Luis Mendez stepped in again, flashing his shiny .221 batting average. Perhaps the mistake of the season happened next for Lancaster when Mendez hit a simple grounder to 3rd base and JetHawk 3B Rio Ruiz's throw to first fell short and it couldn't be picked up by 1B Chase McDonald. The next batter for Myrtle Beach, Lewis Brinson, knew it was his time to shine and he finished the game off with an "!" with THIS pefectly placed single right over 2B Austin Elkins' head and 3B Edwin Garcia slid across home plate as the game winning run:

Faulkner, 21, earns his first promotion to Double-A of his career. He leaves the Carolina League with the second most strikeouts in the circuit (100).. Of his 21 outings, eight were scoreless and he allowed three or fewer runs in 16 of his 18 starts. The Rangers drafted Faulkner in the 14th round of the 2011 MLB June Amateur Draft out of South Aiken High School.

The two Swedish rock bands are set to take the stage at TicketReturn.com Field before the next Pelicans' home game.

Hardcore Superstar is a hard rock band from Gothenburg, Sweden. The band was formed in 1997 and continue on today. Hardcore Superstar have had several #1 hit singles, and Grammy wins in Sweden.

Crashdïet (ofte.n stylized as CRASHDÏET) are a Swedish glam metal band from Stockholm. They have released four albums: 2005's Rest in Sleaze, 2007's The Unattractive Revolution, 2010s Generation Wild and 2013's The Savage Playground.

Pelicans manager C. Massey and GM Andy Milovich have teamed together to bring the 2 Swedish rock band together for one night in Myrtle Beach, 2 hours before game time. This is the 2nd time this season that the duo of Massey and Milovich have pulled off bringing in rare Swedish rock bands to the Myrtle Beach area, and the game on Friday could suddenly turn in to a sell out now that the concert information has surfaced. General admission tickets to the ballgame get you in early for the concert and of course the ballgame. Don't miss this excellent opportunity to be rocked!

In front of a good crowd of 6,058 Myrtle Beach fans, the Pelicans didn't dissapoint.

The action on the scoreboard began in the bottom of the third inning when Pelicans' second baseman Christopher Bostick punched an RBI double to left, scoring Royce Bolinger with two outs, who singled and was sac-bunted over to second by 3B Luis Mendez, giving Myrtle Beach a 1-0 lead.

The scoring would continue for the birds in the inning, when first baseman Preston Beck doubled down the left field line, driving in both Christopher Bostick and LF Zach Cone, who walked. 3-0 MB.

In the forth inning, after a fielding error by the Lancaster second baseman, CF Nick Williams tripled, followed by a Royce Bolinger RBI single right past the Lancaster third baseman. 5-0 MB.

Myrtle Beach would add one more run in the bottom of inning eight, after Manager Massey subbed in all his replacements including backup catcher David Lyon who had been on a terrible cold streak and had been not playing much because of it, prior to Saturday's game. Lyon came through with the 6th and final RBI of the night from a sac-fly.

The JetHawks of Lancaster made 3 errors during the course of the game. Although their pitching staff allowed 6 runs, only 2 of them were earned. The mistakes made by Lancaster cost them a chance at the first half championship, as Myrtle Beach cruised to a shutout victory, claiming the first half title.

Myrtle Beach Pelicans (42-26) vs Stockton Ports (27-41)

Birds and Ports split first two games of the final series of the first half

GAME ONE : Pitching matchup: Myrtle Beach- Sam Wolff (4-5, 6.02), Stockton- Dillon Overton (3-2, 6.03)

GAME TWO : Pitching matchup: Myrtle Beach- Luis Parra (3-3, 3.86), Stockton- Ryan Doolittle (0-0, 5.40)

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - The Myrtle Beach Pelicans, Class A-Advanced affiliate of the Texas Rangers lost game one at home of the four game set against the last-place Stockton Ports, but rebounded well in game 2.

In game one, the only positive of the night for the Myrtle Beach faithful was that they went home with free Bojangles'. Myrtle Beach starter Sam Wolff struck out lead off man Boog Powell, the Stockton CF, who was the "Bo Batter of the Game". If the Pelicans struck out Powell at any point of the game, the fans would go home with a free box of chicken and fries, with a biscuit from southern favorite restaurant, Bojangles', and Wolff got the job done by getting Powell to chase a 2-2 fastball high and in in the first inning.

Unfortunately, that was the lone excitement for Myrtle Beach fans, as their team would fall to a shutout defeat. Player of the game, Dillon Overton, the Stockton starter put on a show, making the Pelican hitters look weak at the plate all night, throwing a complete game shutout while striking out 7.

FINAL SCORE: Myrtle Beach 0, Stockton 7

In game two, the Pelicans got much better starting pitching than the first match up of the series and managed to put pressure on the Ports of Stockton by putting up 7 runs of their own in the victory.
