MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - The Texas Rangers have made the following transaction that affects the roster of the Myrtle Beach Pelicans. Right-handed pitcher Alex "Chi Chi" Gonzalez have been promoted to Double-A Frisco. Outfielder Chris Grayson arrived from Double-A Frisco.

Gonzalez, 22, gets the call to Double-A a year and two days after the Rangers made him their first selection in the 2013, going 23rd overall in the 2013 Draft. The right-hander won the first game of his professional career on April 27 at Wilmington.

The Delray Beach, Florida native departs the Grand Strand with a 5-1 record and a 2.62 ERA. He is tied for the team lead in wins and has the fifth-best ERA in the Carolina League. He is also third in WHIP (1.10) and fourth in (.222) among qualifying Carolina/California Leaguers. In 65 1/3 innings over eleven outings, all starts, Gonzalez struck out 49 and walked 16. Seven of his 11 starts were quality starts. During a three-start stretch from April 28 through May 8, Gonzalez strung together 14 2/3 consecutive scoreless innings, the longest such stretch by any Pelicans pitcher this season.

Grayson, 24, makes his fourth trip to Myrtle Beach and second this season. The Monroe, Louisiana product spent the last month of the 2012 season with the Pelicans, all of the 2013 campaign with the club, and spent two weeks with the team in early May. A 13th round selection in the 2011 Draft, Grayson hit .250 (8-for-32) in 10 games for the Pelicans in his most recent stint in Myrtle Beach with three doubles, an RBI, and two steals. He opened the season in Frisco and went back to Double-A after his time with the Pelicans this year; in 22 games in Double-A, the outfielder hit .278 with one home run and 14 RBI.

Gonzalez remains on the Pelicans roster. A corresponding move to make room for him on the active roster of Double-A Frisco will be announced.

Season Seats, Mini Plans, Flex Books, and single game tickets are available to see the Pelicans in 2014. Bostick and Lyon homer, Birds win 8th straight

Pitching matchup: Myrtle Beach- Sam Wolff (1-2, 6.61), Lancaster- Lance McCullers (1-2, 10.29)

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - The Myrtle Beach Pelicans, Class A-Advanced affiliate of the Texas Rangers took down the Lancaster JetHawks Tuesday evening as they remained in first place in the division and won their 8th straight ballgame.

The Pelicans, coming off a day off, didn't look rusty from their relaxing travel day. In fact, the rest did the team well as the offense would score 8 runs in the game, starting in the 3rd inning.

In the top half of the 3rd, Lancaster starter Lance McCullers had struck out 5 straight Pelicans before getting in to trouble. With two outs, he walked LF Chris Garia, and 2B Christopher "Boom" Bostick wouldn't miss his chance to make the score 2-0 Pelicans as he put a dent in the scoreboard with the blast. Here's a look:

      20140609_171155 (1).jpg
He's still the one they call Mr. "Boom" Bostick..

The bottom of the 3rd saw Lancaster put a run on the scoreboard on a fielder's choice. 2-1 Myrtle Beach.

Joey Gallo extended is burning hot hitting streak to 12 games in the top of the 4th inning with a lead off single. Myrtle Beach would go on to load the bases with nobody out, but only walked away with one run, an RBI single by RF Royce Bolinger. 3-1 Pelicans.

Lancaster added another run in the bottom of the 4th, this time on a sac fly. 3-2, Birds.

Skipping inning 5, and moving to the bottom of the 6th, Myrtle Beach starter Sam Wolff found himself in trouble as he tired. After he allowed two runners on, with no outs, manager Massey sent out Assistant Manager Kenny Powers to yank Wolff out of trouble. Massey called for Will Lamb, a left-handed relief pitcher out of Clemson University. It was an excellent choice as he'd strike out the first two hitters he faced, and got the third to hit a deep fly ball to right for an easy can of corn catch by Bolinger.

Top of the 7th: Texas Ranger's CF prospect Nick Williams lead off the 7th with a single to center, followed by a Royce Bolinger single off the right field wall that advanced Williams to third. INF Alberto Truinfel hit in to the double play, but scored Williams to make it 4-2, moving later in to the game.

The bottom half of inning 7 saw no scoring, but that was a good thing for Myrtle Beach. Jose Monegro, a right handed relief pitcher from San Francisco de Macoris, Dominican Republic, made his Pelicans debut with a seemingly effortless 1-2-3 inning, including a strike out. Massey is fond of his pitching style and should be using him a lot moving forward.

The top half of the 8th: With 2 outs and 1B Preston Beck on first, SS Hanser Alberto lined in to right field for a single. Catcher David Lyon continued his hot streak at the plate in powerful fashion with THIS 375 foot dinger to right:

      20140609_164637 (1).jpg
David Lyon loves his playing time, that's for sure

Going back out for his 2nd inning of relief, in the 8th, Jose Monegro gave up a lead off home run to right, making things 7-3 with Myrtle Beach still in control.

The Pelicans weren't done. In the top of the 9th, Luis Mendez (SS) came off the bench to pinch hit for Christopher Bostick and play defense, and he worked the walk right off the bench, which is usually easier said than done. He'd later score on a passed ball and Myrtle Beach would easily hang on for the victory. Birds win!

      Pelican Standouts
      2B- Christopher Bostick: 1-4, HR, 2 RBI
      C- David Lyon: 1-3, HR , 3 RBI
      SP- Sam Wolff: 5 IP, 6 H, 2 ER, 4 K
      RP- Jose Monegro: 3 IP, 2 H, 1 ER, 3 K

It's easy to put together a winning streak when your lineup looks like this:

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (JUNE 16, 2014) - The Texas Rangers have made the following transactions that affect the roster of the Myrtle Beach Pelicans. Left-handed pitcher Will Lamb has been promoted to Double-A Frisco. There is no corresponding roster move at this time.

Lamb, 23, earns the promotion after less than two months with the Pelicans this season. The former Clemson Tiger is in the midst of 7 2/3 innings scoreless streak spanning five appearances and is 1-1 with a 2.41 ERA on the year. He is also two for three converting save opportunities. The southpaw began the year in Extended Spring Training and was promoted to Myrtle Beach on April 18. Over his last three outings, Lamb struck out eight Carolina Leaguers, allowed no walks, and only three base hits over five innings. In 14 outings spanning 18 2/3 innings, Lamb has struck out 25 and walked nine, allowing just five runs, all earned. The league hit .236 off of the left-hander, and left-handed batters hit just .182 (4-for-22) off of him. The Yorktown, Virginia native is in his fourth professional season and spent all of 2013 in Myrtle Beach. In 39 outings last season, Lamb was 5-3 and posted a 5.17 ERA. He was drafted by the Rangers in second round of the 2011 MLB June Amateur Draft.

The Pelicans roster is now at 24 active players, which is one below the Carolina League limit.

All terms of the agreement are confidential.

Eastbound & Down Gear Available at Pro Shop

Dress Like Kenny Powers and the Myrtle Beach Mermen

                      KP on sale.jpg

MYRTLE BEACH, SC - A week after Kenny Powers announced his return to Pelicans Ballpark in Myrtle Beach, the Pelicans now have a full stock of show gear at the Pelicans Pro Shop and online at MyrtleBeachPelicans.com.
With New Era 59/50 on-field style, show inspired hats already in stock, the Pro Shop has added Carolina blue Kenny Powers' Myrtle Beach Mermen t-shirt jerseys and white 'Eastbound & Down' inscribed t-shirt jerseys. Kenny Powers bobbleheads and pint glasses will become available in the coming weeks. Everything is officially licensed merchandise of the show.

The Mermen t-shirt, made to reflect Powers' new team, is screen printed with a script Myrtle Beach Mermen logo on the front and "Powers 55" screen printed in block lettering on the back. The white t-shirt has the 'Eastbound & Down' logo screen printed on the front and "Powers 55" screen printed on the back. Both are 100% cotton.

The hat designs feature a light blue and white script 'MB' logo on a navy blue fitted body. There is also a light blue New Era logo over the left ear. Hat sizes range from six and 5/8 inches to eight inches.

"There's been a lot of energy around 'Eastbound & Down' and the show's presence at the ballpark," said Pelicans Merchandise Manager Dan Bailey. "We had a great opportunity to witness the show's filming at the park and adding to our options in the Pro Shop just helps fans share in that excitement."

The third season of 'Eastbound & Down' was filmed, in part, at Pelicans Ballpark. Myrtle Beach has welcomed Kenny back with open arms and although he doesn't play a huge part on the team, his presence certainly has been known.

Pelicans single game tickets, season tickets, flex Books and mini-plans for the 2012 season are now on sale at the Pelicans Ballpark offices or by calling (843) 918-6000. Normal box office hours are Monday to Friday, 10am to 5pm.

Brandon Meredith's 3-run homer was the difference maker against Myrtle Beach in game 4 of the series

Pitching matchup: Myrtle Beach- Luis Parra (2-1, 3.86), Lancaster- Vincent Velasquez (1-3, 3.22)

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - The Myrtle Beach Pelicans, Class A-Advanced affiliate of the Texas Rangers got beat by one run in game four of an away series at Lancaster on Friday night, despite a great effort by 3B prospect Joey Gallo, who extended his hit streak to 15 games by homering twice. Read further for details on the contest.

Myrtle Beach and Joey Gallo got off to a red hot start in this one. In the 2nd inning, Mr. Joey Gallo lead off with a solo jack to right. After an Alberto Truinfel (SS) ground out, catcher David Lyon singled to center. One batter later, Lyon stole second and CF Zach Cone homered to center, giving the Birds an early 3-0 lead.

Myrtle Beach lefty starter Luis Parra was pretty solid all night long, but he was tagged for his only two runs of the game in the 4th inning as he gave up 2 runs on a double with two outs. 3-2, Myrtle Beach.

Skipping ahead to the 8th inning, which featured THIS Joey Gallo monster home run to right. See how sweet it is below:

                        https://<iframe width="854" height="...reen></iframe>

That put the road team Pelicans ahead by 2 runs, but that wouldn't be enough to hold off the JetHawks . Manager Massey and his sidekick Kenny Powers decided to turn the ball over to righty relief pitcher Kason Knapp for the bottom half of the 8th inning, with one out. Lancaster LF Danry Vasquez got the job done with a sac fly after a lead off single and before you knew it, Lancaster had runners on 1st and 3rd with only one out. Lancaster's DH for the evening, Brandon Meredith, worked a 2-2 count before blasting the game's deciding blow in to the left field bleachers, which gave the JetHawks their first lead in the ballgame.

The top of the 9th saw Myrtle Beach make things interesting. Catcher David Lyon and Left Fielder Nick Williams both singled to kick-start the top half of the final inning. After Zach Cone struck out, Nick Williams was picked off at first, which killed the Pelicans' momentum. 1B for the evening, Preston Beck then flied to left for an RBI single, scoring Lyon and the Pelicans were within 1 run, but that's all the JetHawk bullpen would allow.

                        Pelican Standouts
3B- Joey Gallo: 3-4 (extended hit streak to 15 games), 2 HR, 2B

Joey Gallo joins Chi Chi Gonzalez in Double-A Frisco after two outstanding months on the Grand Strand.

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - The Texas Rangers have made the following transaction that affect the roster of the Myrtle Beach Pelicans. Third baseman Joey Gallo has been promoted to Double-A Frisco.

Gallo leaves as the team leader in a handful of offensive statistical categories and shares the professional lead in homers with 21.

Gallo, 20, earns his first promotion to Double-A after two months with the Pelicans. The slugger departs the Carolina League as the league leader in home runs (21), RBI (50), runs scored (53), on-base percentage (.463), slugging (.735), walks (51), and is third in the league in hitting (.323). He averaged a home run every nine at-bats, by far the best pace in the league. His total of 51 walks this season has already set a new career-high for him in a single season. Gallo has the best slugging percentage, OPS (1.199), and the most walks among all active and qualifying minor leaguers. Despite a season with the Birds of just 58 games, Gallo is tied for the fourth most home runs in a season by a Myrtle Beach hitter. He is also eighth on the team's all-time career home run list. He led all of minor league baseball with 40 home runs last season. He hit multiple homers in a game five times this season, including two three-homer games, and has 14 multi-homer games in his three-year professional career.

                          Gallo_Joey_.jpg

The Henderson, Nevada native was selected by the Rangers in the first round of the 2012 Draft out of Bishop Gorman High School in Las Vegas. He was a lock-in for the All-Star game, but won't stick around in single-A long enough to play in it. Both Gallo and Gonzalez looked to be on their way of being elected to the California League / Carolina League All-Star Game, now neither will appear.

"It's a bittersweet day for me, and the whole Myrtle Beach Pelicans organization", says Myrtle Beach Manager and VP, C. Massey. "I've never seen a talent like him in the minor leagues and he was the key to our offense here in Myrtle Beach. With him as our leader, we were a playoff team. Now, other players have to carry the torch if we want to see post-season action this year. We can do it, but we'll miss Gallo".

Wow, those are going to be some tuff #'s to replace. I love the whole minor league idea and playing the games, but it's tough when your favorite players get promoted or need to be promoted up.

Will be interesting to see who becomes the new star of the team.

I couldn't have said it much better myself. My potential all-star catcher Jorge Alfaro will now have a ton of pressure on him, and I'm going to need big contributions across the board to try and keep up in the division after losing those offensive numbers. Thanks for following this, my man.

                                No Gallo, No Problem

Pitching matchup: Myrtle Beach- Andrew Faulkner (0-1, 3.10), Stockton- Micheal Ynda (0-4, 11.44)

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - The Myrtle Beach Pelicans, Class A-Advanced affiliate of the Texas Rangers traveled back home to Myrtle Beach for a 4 game set without a familiar team star. 3B Joey Gallo was promoted to AA- Frisco in the morning, hours before Myrtle Beach's game. This left the coaching duo of Massey and Powers with their hands full, trying to piece together what will be a new Pelicans lineup without the league leader in home runs, RBIs, and a number of other categories on the roster anymore.

In front of a 67% filled TicketReturn.com Field, the Pelicans proved things may not be as bad as one thinks without their now-former slugger.

In the second inning, Stockton got things going first after Myrtle Beach lefty-starter Andrew Faulkner walked 2 straight batters before their catcher, Ryan Gorton, lined to left to give the Ports a 1-0 lead.

The bottom half of the inning saw Myrtle Beach get right back in things. LF Nick Williams lead off with a single, followed by fly outs by Hanser Alberto and David Lyon. Seconds later, CF Zach Cone crushed a ball over the batter's eye in center. Don't believe me? Here's the highlight for yourself:

                                https://<iframe width="854" height="...reen></iframe>

That put the Pelicans ahead 2-1. However, in the top of the 3rd, Stockton would tie the ballgame at 2 on an RBI double by Matt Olson, 1B.

The bottom of the 5th saw Myrtle Beach take the lead once more. Stockton starter Ynda had retired 7 straight Pelicans before Zach Cone singled on a grounder to center field. RF Royce Bolinger would then do the rest himself with a 2-run homer, over the seats in left field. Take a look:

Here, Royce Bolinger admires his 2-run shot to left

In the bottom of the 6th, Myrtle Beach DH David Lyon knocked in 2B Christopher Bostick as well as OF Nick Williams after Massey had his boys play some small ball to set runners up in scoring position. The two-run double to center put Myrtle Beach ahead 6-2.

Nick Williams again would be involved in the scoring action, this time doing it all himself with a 2-out solo shot off of a low and inside fastball in the 8th inning.
