Birds blank Storm behind 3 home runs
MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - The Myrtle Beach Pelicans, Class A-Advanced affiliate of the Texas Rangers, launched three home runs in an 8-0 win over the Lake Elsinore Storm on Friday night at Lake Elsinore.
The Pelicans got the ball rolling early in the first inning, when LF Chris Garia lead off the game with a walk. 2B Christopher "Boom" Bostick jumped on a 1-0 fastball to make it 2-0 Pelicans moments later. Here's a look at the scene:

They call him Mr. "Boom" Bostick..
In the top of inning number 2, RF Royce Bolinger got things going for Myrtle Beach with a single. With two outs, speedy outfield Chris Garia put out a 2 run bomb to put the Birds ahead 4-0.
The Storm threatened to get on the scoreboard in the 4th inning with runners on 1st and 3rd with two outs. Pelicans starter, and "ace" Alex "Chi Chi" Gonzalez, worked out of danger on a strike out. He had 7 strikeouts through 4 innings.
Skipping to the top of the 6th RF Royce Bolinger worked a lead off walk. DH/OF Chris Grayson got his first hit in a Myrtle Beach uniform this season after playing all season last year with the Pelicans, and being sent down from AA Frisco this season. 1B Preston Beck then decided it was his turn to put the phrase "bloop and a blast" in to play with this swing:

Lefty reliever Will Lamb took over for Myrtle Beach in the 8th and he allowed one single the remainder of the game.
Star catcher Jorge Alfaro grounded up the middle to drive in 1B Preston Beck for run number 8 in the 9th inning, and the Pelicans would remain in first base after the shutout victory.

That's cool that you used to play with him. I haven't met him yet, but the autograph hungry fans at the ballpark say that he is one of the harder oned to get. He might not like to sign autographs but can still be a good guy I'm sure.Check out my three critically acclaimed dynasties in the Dynasty HQ section:

Alex was our best pitcher, I looked up to him as a freshman when he was a senior. He's a clown, but he is very intelligent.
Call him "ChiChi," and that could possibly get you an autograph if he is as difficult as they say."The most amazing things that can happen to a human being will happen to you if you just lower your expectations."Comment

Myrtle Beach mounts 7-run comeback in victory
MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - The Myrtle Beach Pelicans, Class A-Advanced affiliate of the Texas Rangers were winners tonight, but they had to come from behind to do it.
Myrtle Beach starter Cody Buckel was knocked around HARD. He only lasted 2 innings - giving up a 2-run dinger in the first, a grand slam in the second, and a run-scoring single to boot. But don't count out the Myrtle Beach bats.
In the 4th inning, Myrtle Beach got on the scoreboard when 3B Joey Gallo lined a single in to left field that scored Christopher "Boom" Bostick. That made things 7-1, in favor of the home town Storm. Here's a snapshot of the Gallo single:
CAM01878.jpg
Jerry Callo, or Joey Gallo? First name: Joey. Last Name: Gallo. Future superstar.
In the 5th inning, The Pelicans again scratched in to the scoreboard with a Jorge Alfaro (1B this evening) double to center with the bases loaded, scoring (catcher this evening) David Lyon, LF Chris Garia, and 2B Christopher Bostick.
Finally, the big, go-ahead inning came for the Pelicans. The 6th inning saw the Birds hit two, two-run home runs. Here's a look at the first, off the bat of RF Royce Bolinger:
CAM01874.jpg
Royce Bolinger shows why he deserves to be in the lineup every day, despite his average being lower than it should be..
The second bomb was off the bat of second baseman Christopher Bostick, who said "boom" for the second night in a row. That home run was the go-ahead shot and all the Myrtle Beach Pelicans would need as their bullpen was able to hold off the Storm the remainder of the game. Alex Claudio, the current Pelican closer got his league-leading 7th save of the season.

Prospect Q&A: Sardinas no third wheel
After Andrus and Profar, Rangers have another top shortstop
By Andrew Pentis / Special to MLB.com
Sardinas.jpg
Luis Sardinas signed with Texas on July 2, 2009, the same day as Jurickson Profar.
Maybe Luis Sardinas is called "Bambi," as he says, because his Tiburones de la Guaira Winter Ball teammates saw his curled earlobes and just couldn't resist. Or maybe it's because Sardinas runs like a deer.
Sardinas, who spent his offseason back home in Puerto Ordaz, Venezuela, wakes at 5 a.m. each morning to jog two to three miles around his house. By 9 a.m., the Rangers' 150-pound shortstop -- yes, Texas has another good one behind Major Leaguer Elvis Andrus and the up-and-coming Jurickson Profar -- has already completed his agility drills and moved onto the diamond.
"They say the early bird catches the worm," Sardinas said in his native Spanish.
If it's possible for a 19-year-old pro ballplayer to be late, however, Sardinas hasn't exactly arrived on time, at least in his own eyes. Blame that on a variety of injuries to both of his shoulders requiring surgery and affecting his 2010-11 seasons.
Finally healthy last year, Sardinas showed off his hitting prowess (.291 average), fielding genius and, sure, his scampering speed (32 stolen bases). These traits netted him the 84th spot on MLB.com's Top 100 Prospects list when entering the 2013 season. Now, in 2014, he finds himself even higher ranked.
MiLB.com: Do you have a favorite highlight from your time at Class A Myrtle Beach?
Sardinas: When I hit my first homer of the season, we were winning, 6-0, and I didn't run [hard]. When I came back, everyone gave me the silent treatment in the dugout because I'm not a power hitter and was all fired up about the bomb. After that, everyone was laughing and hugging me. The game was wide open, so I got a pretty good pitch over the heart of the plate. It did go far. I think I can develop some pop.
MiLB.com: How would you describe your switch-hitting approach at the plate? What do you like to accomplish specifically in terms of mechanics to give yourself a chance to make solid contact?
Sardinas: I always look for one pitch to hit, always have a plan at the plate, and I would like to improve my mechanics to pull the ball better from the left side.
MiLB.com: You swiped a career-high 32 bags in 2012. Do you have a goal for how many you'd like to steal in '14?
Sardinas: My goal this year is to steal 50.
MiLB.com: A lot is said about your defense as well. How did you get so good with the glove?
Sardinas: Day-to-day practice and being blessed by God, man
Sardinas 2.jpg
MiLB.com: Now that you've made it to pro ball, what are your long-term goals as a ballplayer?
Sardinas: Having more Gold Gloves in MLB than Omar Vizquel [11].
MiLB.com: Have you met Vizquel? What would you want to ask him?
Sardinas: I have met him. If I could ask him something, I would ask him to come take some ground balls with me.
MiLB.com: Vizquel hails from Caracas -- what other Venezuelan ballplayers do you admire?
Sardinas: Luis Aparicio, David Concepcion, Ozzie Guillen -- I hope I'm one of them one day.

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - The Myrtle Beach Pelicans, Class A-Advanced affiliate of the Texas Rangers fell in 11 innings on the road at Lake Elsinore tonight in front of a very small crowd at "THE DIAMOND", the ballpark in Lake Elsinore. The stadium was only at 10% capacity, with a total of 1,701 fans in attendance for the 11-inning thriller.
Myrtle Beach jumped out first in this ballgame when super star catching prospect Jorge Alfaro jolted a first inning home run. 1-0 Birds.
In the top of the forth inning, the Pelican's third baseman for the night Luis Mendez (Joey Gallo was given the night off to get rest) grounded to CF for a single scoring SS Hanser Alberto. 2-0 Birds.
Unfortunately for the Texas Rangers high-A club, The bottom of the forth inning also saw the big blow in the game against the road squad. Myrtle Beach starter Sam Wolff missed his spot and gave up a 3-run homer which gave up the lead. 3-2 Storm.
Neither team got any hits until the top of the ninth, when Myrtle Beach's Jorge Alfaro grounded to right for a run scoring single to send it to extra innings with the score 3-3.
Lake Elsinore would win in the 11th inning when Birds relief pitcher Andrew Faulkner gave up a double that scored the winning run for the hometown Storm.

Physical frame; thick lower half; innings-eating horse; long stride to the plate; keeps good momentum and balance throughout; short arm action to 3/4 slot; stays closed a long time then explodes to plate; hips and shoulders rotate on time and arm comes through clean and fast; gets extended very well on FB; repeated mechanics much better than last year; not much physical projection left or needed; very good athlete.

Realistic 60; no. 3 starter

Overall
Chi Chi Gonzalez is an advanced college arm ready to move up through the system. The mechanics are much cleaner and the stuff is advanced. He is presently working on pitches but still has the swing-and-miss stuff to strikeout hitters in High-A. He holds velocity throughout his outing and can reach back for more when needed. He flashes two plus secondaries with a plus current FB that can be used as a weapon based on how he can manipulate it. The overall command profile needs refinement but the cleaner mechanics give me reason to believe it will play solid average to plus and as well as improving the CH.Check out my three critically acclaimed dynasties in the Dynasty HQ section:

Overall
Gallo hit massive shots in BP that we all have seen before but that’s not what impressed me. He struggled against Manaea and arm-side stuff but made an adjustment each night. Gallo was sitting on breaking pitches and still driving fastballs. Against Almonte, he crushed a mistake to left-center for HR like he will usually do. His next at-bat, runners at first and second, he laid off a plus-plus CH (one of the best Almonte threw all night) just off the plate, fading away. I anticipated Gallo was going to swing out of his shoes but he took it. He then took a strike on the outer part of the plate, which was a pitch he could drive, but he chose to be patient. Almonte threw him a CH down and Gallo sat on it and drove it through the hole in between first and second, hitting behind the runners. His last at-bat against Almonte, the pitcher tried to come inside with 95. FB had heavy sink and started at Gallo’s hip and ended up on the inside corner. I saw Gallo shuffle out of the way of this pitch before. This time he opened the hips, kept hands inside the ball and got extreme extension post contact. The ball got lost in the night. The adjustments he’s made have impressed me. And even if the hit tool never reaches my projected assumption, I still think he’s Pedro Alvarez at the plate at least.Check out my three critically acclaimed dynasties in the Dynasty HQ section:

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - The Myrtle Beach Pelicans, Class A-Advanced affiliate of the Texas Rangers capped off a 4 game road series against the Lake Elsinore Storm on Monday night, winning 4-3 in 10 innings.
Pelicans third baseman Joey Gallo added 2 RBI's and starting pitching Luis Parra went 7.1 innings, allowing only 1 run, but still didn't get the win.
Things got started in the 6th inning, when Joey Gallo, back in the lineup after getting the night off the previous ballgame, placed a ball in to left field scoring SS Hanser Alberto and catcher David Lyon.
In the 8th, Birds relief pitcher Jason Knapp walked in a run with the bases loaded which made the score 2-1.
Shortly after, still in the 8th, Chris Grayson, getting the start in left field hit a solo shot over the right field wall to give the Pelicans their 2-run lead right back.
League leading closer, Myrtle Beach's Alex Claudio ran in to big issues when he came in to close out the ballgame Monday night. He had no problem getting the first two outs of the inning, but then gave up a bloop single, followed by a hit by pitch. Then, when you thought things couldn't get any worse, Lake Elsinore got a clutch 2-run double to tie the ballgame. Bird's righty Cody Ege was called on to stop the bleeding, and he did so successfully.
In the tenth, the aforementioned Hanser Alberto hit a walkoff single to score first baseman Preston Beck.

Myrtle Beach welcomes Manager Massey to the home crowd, gets win behind 2 Gallo homers and a complete game shutout from Buckel
MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - The Myrtle Beach Pelicans, Class A-Advanced affiliate of the Texas Rangers introduced their new manager to the locals and tourists of the Myrtle Beach Grand Strand area and took game one of the home series against Lancaster to the tune of 10-0 on Wiener Wednesday.
Pitching matchup: Myrtle Beach- Cody Buckel (1-1, 4.58 ERA), Lancaster- Vincent Velasquez (1-1, 2.31 ERA)
Myrtle Beach short stop Hanser Alberto got things going in the bottom of the second inning with a one out single. Luis Mendez, who was the DH tonight also singled. With 2 on and 1 out, OF Nick Williams was asked
to put down a sac bunt to advance both runners and get both runners in scoring position early in the ballgame. Williams got the bunt down and reached safely to leave the bases loaded with OF Royce Bolinger. Pelican's manager C. Massey, up to his usual antics, asked Bolinger to safety squeeze with the bases loaded and only one out. He coped Williams and got the bunt down, and reached first safely to put Myrtle Beach up 1-0.
The Birds weren't done in the inning. Catcher, David Lyon, was asked by Massey to keep the chain moving with another bases loaded bunt, and things couldn't have gone any better for the Pelicans as Lancaster starter Velasquez fielded the ball cleanly but chunked the ball over the JetHawk 1B's head, allowing all 3 runners to score. At the end of the 2nd inning, Myrtle Beach lead 4-0.
In the bottom of the third, the lead for Myrtle Beach grew when Jorge Alfaro, who was at first base getting the night off of catching, was hit by a pitch. 2 pitches later, MB 3B Joey Gallo goes bombs away, making the score 6-0 in favor of the home team. Here's a look at his shot in the 3rd inning:
https://<iframe width="640" height="...reen></iframe>
Still in the third, OF Nick Williams singled, then stole 2nd, and fellow outfielder Royce Bolinger again came through, this time with a run-scoring double between center and left field, which chased Velasquez out of the ballgame.
To inning four: Myrtle Beach put the game out of reach with two home runs in the forth. With one out, 2B Christopher "Boom" Bostick homered to right. Jorge Alfaro then laced a single in to right and Mr. Joey Gallo took care of business again, for the 2nd time in as many at-bats. Another two-run shot for Gallo, which made the score 10-0, Myrtle Beach. Below is a look at Joey's 2nd two-run HR of the game:

The two teams were held scoreless for the remainder of the game as Myrtle Beach right handed starer Cody Buckel went the distance, throwing 99 pitches while striking out 7 JetHawk batters.
