Bullpen Woes Cost Myrtle Beach
Stockton LF Boog Powell admires his 9th inning grand slam
MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - The Myrtle Beach Pelicans, Class A-Advanced affiliate of the Texas Rangers had a horrible bullpen outing that cost themselves the game on Monday evening.
With Joey Gallo up in AA now, the Birds of Myrtle Beach had to find a replacement. During the previous game, a 7-2 Myrtle Beach victory, the Myrtle Beach faithful got their first look at Gallo's replacement, Nick Vickerson.

- Arrived from Hickory (Low-A): 51 G, .299 13 2B, 4 HR, 25 RBI, 11-13 SB w/ Crawdads - played 1B, 2B, 3B, LF, RF, C and P over last 2 seasons - played at 4 colleges including Florida State. Height: 5’11” Weight: 205 B/T: R/R Age: 24 (7/8/89 in Limestone, ME) HS: Hillcrest HS (Tuscaloosa, AL) College: Miss. St Acquired: 20th Rd, 2011 Draft. Seasons w/ the Pelicans: 1st season.
Nick Didn't look comfortable at the plate in his debut game, at all. Striking out 3 times and flying out to shallow right. He was bound and determined to make a better impression in his 2nd game with the Pelicans.
He started things off for the Pelicans in the bottom of the 2nd inning with a triple to center, the speedster's first hit with Myrtle Beach. The next batter, SS Hanser Alberto hit a sac-fly to get the Birds on the board and in the lead 1-0.
The Pelicans were not only showing off a new player in the field, but a new starting pitcher. Well, not really a new pitcher, but it was his first start of the season. Relief pitcher Alexander Claudio took to the hill for the first time as a starter and fared very well. His first issue he ran in to came in the top of the fifth inning, where with 2 outs, the Ports of Stockton got a clutch single to tie the game at 1.
The Pelicans wouldn't do anything to speak of in the bottom half of the 5th, but in the top of the 6th, Stockton was back in action. Again with 2 outs, Claudio gave up a single, a walk, and a big 2-run double before getting yanked from the game after 5.2 innings of 3 ER baseball. Stockton would add two more runs on back to back run scoring singles off of the Myrtle Beach bullpen. 5-1 Stockton.
Myrtle Beach would get 3 runs back in the bottom half of the inning, however. LF Chris Garia got things going with a double to center, followed by an Alberto Truinfel (2B) single. The next batter, all-star hopeful Jorge Alfaro (C), then powered an RBI double to left, giving the Pelicans their second run. 3B Nick Vickerson would then continue to show off in his "official" welcoming to the team, as he'd collect a 2 RBI base knock scoring both Truinfel and Alfaro. The Ports still lead 5-4 at the end of 6.
Things would go down hill from that point. In the 8th and 9th innings, the Stockton Ports would combine for 3 hits, 3 walks, and 5 runs, including a big blast coming from the bat of Stockton LF Boog Powell. The worst news of all was that the big blast wasn't just any old big blast against Myrtle Beach, but a grand slam, which came in the top of inning 9.
The bottom of the 9th would see MB RF Royce Bolinger knock in CF Zach Cone who doubled with 2 outs, bringing the final score to 12-5.
Pelican Standouts
3B- Nick Vickerson: 2-3, 1 R, 1 3B, 2 RBI
C- Jorge Alfaro: 2-4, 1 R, 1 2B, 1 RBI
SP- Alexander Claudio: 5.2 IP, 8 H, 3 ER, 1 BB, 4 K
Bullpen- SUCKED. Each guy allowed at least one ER. Leclerc allowed 1, while Ege, Monegro and Knapp all allowed 2 each.

Claudio earns Double-A promotion

Pelicans pitcher Alexander Claudio dominated the league this season and earns a promotion to Double-A Frisco where he finished the 2013 campaign. (Robert Gurganus / Myrtle Beach Pelicans)
MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - The Texas Rangers announced transactions on Wednesday that affect the roster of the Myrtle Beach Pelicans. Left-handed pitcher Alexander Claudio was promoted to Double-A Frisco, and right-handed pitcher Jose Monegro was transferred to Class-A Hickory.
Claudio, 22, earns his third stint in Double-A. On the initial roster released by the Frisco RoughRiders this season, Claudio was transferred to Myrtle Beach on Opening Night where he has pitched all season in the Carolina League. A Midseason All-Star hopeful selection this season, the southpaw has dominated Carolina League batters to the tune of 4-0 record and a 1.09 ERA; he was four for five in save opportunities with the Birds. The earned run average would be lowest in the Carolina League if he qualified for league leaders, which is he is only ten innings shy of doing. Logging 49 1/3 innings in 17 outings, Claudio has struck out 56 batters while only walking nine. Among Carolina League relievers, Claudio is fourth in opponents' batting average (.201), second in strikeouts per nine innings (9.98), fourth in walks per nine innings (1.36), and third in baserunners per nine innings (8.17). Beginning the 2013 campaign in Hickory, the San Juan, Puerto Rico native spent the second half of the season with Frisco, skipping the Class A-Advanced level. In 21 appearances, he was 1-5 with a 2.84 in Double-A last year.
Monegro, 24, heads to Hickory where he will pitch for his fourth affiliate of the season. Monegro has also pitched for Round Rock and Frisco. In six outings for the Pelicans, the right-hander went 2-1 and posted a 1.80 ERA. In 15 innings pitched, Monegro walked only one batter and struck out six. He did not allow a run in his first five appearances, spanning 13 innings-it was the longest scoreless streak strung together by a Pelicans reliever this season.
There are no corresponding roster moves at this time. The Pelicans roster has 23 active players, two below the Carolina League limit.
Season Seats, Mini Plans, Flex Books, and single game tickets are available to see the Pelicans in 2014. Bullpen Woes Part II
Pitching matchup: Myrtle Beach- Victor Payano (3-2, 5.65), Stockton- Seth Streich (1-2, 7.31)
MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - The Myrtle Beach Pelicans, Class A-Advanced affiliate of the Texas Rangers gave up another grand slam home run, this time the dagger early in the 6th inning.
Myrtle Beach starter, Victor Payano wasn't sharp early in the ballgame, beginning in the 2nd inning where he hit the lead off man and allowed a single to the 2nd batter of the inning. 1 batter later, a 3-run bomb sailed over the left field wall, and the Birds found themselves down 3-nil, early.
In the bottom half of the inning, the Birds did get one back run, thanks to a 2-out red-hot streak Zach Cone (OF) double to left. 3-1, Ports.
With the bases loaded in the top of the 5th inning, Myrtle Beach manager C. Massey went to his bullpen. One run would come in to score on a walk, but that's all Stockton would obtain in the inning.
The bottom of the 5th was the big inning for Myrtle Beach. The Pelicans got 4 runs on 3 hits and 2 walks in the inning, which gave the Birds the lead. DH/OF Zach Cone hit a hard ground ball to Stockton 3B Ryon Healy, who made an error with two outs in the inning. That error would come back to cost Stockton big time. Following the error, MB LF Chris Garia singled to left on a ground ball. 2B prospect Christopher Bostick then grounded to right for an RBI single, bringing the score to 4-2, Stockton.
All-star catcher Jorge Alfaro was then walked and to load the bases for Myrtle Beach's newest hope, Nick Vickerson. Vickerson also drew a walk, making the score 4-3, Ports. Next batter up, SS Hanser "Radio" Alberto grounded a worm burner 2 RBI single, coming through in the clutch and giving Myrtle Beach a one run lead. 5-4, MB.
It was all downhill from that point. In the top of inning number 6, outfielder and the game's DH for the Ports, Billy McKinney, hit a grand slam home run to right that just killed any momentum that Myrtle Beach had built up in the previous 4 run inning. 8-5 Ports.
Each team would manage one more run the remainder of the ballgame and Myrtle Beach would fall for the 2nd consecutive night.
Pelican Standouts
SS- Hanser Alberto: 2-5, 2 RBI
SP- Victor Payano: 4.2 IP, 4 H, 4 ER, 4 BB, 6 K

Myrtle Beach Pelicans (23-16) vs Stockton Ports (16-23)
Birds win with late inning heroics, split 4 game set with Stockton
Pitching matchup: Myrtle Beach- Cody Buckel (4-2, 3.04), Stockton- Tim Atherton (0-3, 10.73)
MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - The Myrtle Beach Pelicans, Class A-Advanced affiliate of the Texas Rangers capped off a 4 game series at home with a win on Wednesday night. The series was split 2 games a-piece.
Nick Vickerson, AKA, the Joey Gallo replacement (until he fully prooves himself), got things going early for Myrtle Beach in the bottom of the first with a lead off solo homer to center. 1-0 MB. 2B Christopher "Boom" Bostick decided he wanted a piece of action early as well, as he singled to left and then stole second. Texas Rangers #1 prospect, Jorge Alfaro, knocked a double that advanced Bostick to 3rd, still with no outs. After #3 prospect, OF Nick Williams as well as SS Hanser Alberto recorded outs, DH David Lyon walked to load the bases. Needing someone to come through and drive in some runs, Myrtle Beach found their man in backup INF Alberto Truinfel. Truinfel grounded to left field to score two and put the Birds ahead 3-0 at the end of the first.
Texas Rangers #20 prospect, Christopher "Boom" Bostick went bombastic on a fastball in the bottom of the second inning. The solo homer from Bostick put the Pelicans ahead 4-0.
Skipping ahead to inning six, Myrtle Beach starter, right-hander Cody Buckel found himself in his first trouble of the game. Buckel gave up a lead off walk and and single, but the Ports would only get one run across, cutting the Bird's lead to 3.
The top of the 7th saw Buckel again run in to issues, but this time he wouldn't get as lucky as inning 6 where he only allowed the one run. 4 runs would score, on 5 hits between Buckel and the righty Jason Knapp and the Ports would take a 1 run lead.
Myrtle Beach wouldn't back down, however. In the bottom half of the 7th, Myrtle Beach would load the bases. They'd push across one run, the tying run and the game would stayed tied at 5 going in to the bottom of the 9th where the Myrtle Beach Pelicans would work their magic. 1B Preston Beck would start things off the way any dramatic bottom of the 9th begins, with a lead off walk. With Nick Vickerson digging in to the box, Manager Massey wanted to be strategic. So he ordered up a sac bunt to move Beck up to scoring position for the winning run.

ORDER UP!
Nick Vickerson got the bunt down beautifully and the next batter, who else but Mr. Bombastic himself, Christopher Bostick, singled. With runners on first and third with one away, Jorge Alfaro did THIS for the walk off win:

Pitching matchup: Myrtle Beach- Sam Wolff (2-2, 5.21), Lake Elsinore- Zach Efflin (1-6, 6.87)
MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - The Myrtle Beach Pelicans, Class A-Advanced affiliate of the Texas Rangers didn't get the job done last night in front of 3,265 fans at TicketReturn.Com Field in Myrtle Beach, S.C.
Things were bad from the start for the Pelicans, as starter Sam Wolff gave up all 3 runs he'd allow in the first inning, and those three runs were all Lake Elsinore would need in the 6 run victory.
After Wolff gave up 3 runs in the first, Pelicans first baseman Preston Beck, while on a cold streak, would put one run on the board for the Birds in the third inning with a solo bomb to make the score 3-1, Storm.
In the bottom of the 5th, Catcher David Lyon would would lead off with a single and eventually get driven in from the bat of LF Chris Garia, who hit the sac fly to bring the game to within one run. 3-2, Storm.
The top of the 7th inning was a disaster for Myrtle Beach as the Storm got 5 runs on 2 home runs, 2 walks, and the Pelican's pitchers made 2 wild pickoff attempts at first base for 2 errors and the storm would go on to win 8-2.

Four Pelicans make the Baseball Prospectus Top 50 List
Alfaro, Gallo, Gonzalez, and Williams all recognized
By Nathan Barnett / Myrtle Beach Pelicans
MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (JULY 8, 2014) - Baseball Prospectus released its Top 50, the Best Midseason Prospects, and four 2014 Pelicans made the list and another was listed as just outside the Top 50. Pelicans home run leader Joey Gallo, now in Double-A with the Frisco RoughRiders, ranked highest on the list among Rangers farmhands at number 13, followed by catcher Jorge Alfaro (#25), outfielder Nick Williams (#48), and Gallo's now Frisco teammate Chi Chi Gonzalez (#49). BP also tabbed outfielder Lewis Brinson, who will be promoted to Myrtle Beach from Hickory soon, as one of ten players "in the Top 50 mix."
Gallo_Dano_vifm9gre_px7u0g97.jpg
Gallo, 20, was promoted to Frisco on June 8 after an outstanding two-month romp in the Carolina League. He is still third in the league in average (.323) and first in home runs (21), on-base percentage (.463), slugging percentage (.735), and walks (51). He moves up 82 spots from BA's Top 101 Prospects, published in the offseason. Gallo entered the season as the number 60 ranked prospect in the Baseball America top 100 and as the fourth-best prospect in the Texas system by the same publication. Since his move to Double-A, Gallo has smacked nine more home runs and is tied with Cubs prospect Kris Bryant with the professional baseball lead in homers with 30. Gallo was the 39th overall selection in the 2012 MLB Amateur Draft out of Bishop Gorman High School in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Alfaro_Jorge_040314_0552_gurganus_jqy44amd_04y3mf7v.jpg
Alfaro, 21, ranks thirds in the league with 57 RBI. The catcher moves up 16 spots from the pre-season BA rankings where he was listed number 41. In addition to his offensive skills, Alfaro is fourth in the league in throwing out attempted basestealers (15-for-54, 27.8%) and has the lowest total of attempted steals against him of any qualifying catcher in the league. Alfaro entered the season as Baseball America's second-ranked Rangers prospect and 54th overall, second among Rangers players behind only current Rangers second baseman and 2013 Pelican Rougned Odor.
Williams_Nick_040314_0535_gurganus_n3ungpbd_4n3xbstb.jpg
Williams, 20, moves 42 spots up the list from his pre-season spot at number 88. Williams hit just .229 in April but followed the slow start with a .356 mark in May. Williams was a second round selection by Texas in 2012 out of Ball High School in Galveston, Texas. Like Gallo and Alfaro, Williams made Baseball America's Top 100 at the start of the season as well, ranked 97th as well as third among Rangers farmhands.
Chi Chi.jpeg
Gonzalez, 22, departed for Frisco around the same day as Gallo after a strong first half in his first full-season of professional baseball. Drafted in the First Round (23rd overall) in the 2013 MLB Amateur Draft, Gonzalez was good for fourth-best pitcher in the league. The right-hander tossed a career-high eight scoreless innings on May 3 and took a no-hitter into the seventh once on the road on May 20. He moves up 21 spots from his pre-season number 70 ranking. Baseball America listed Gonzalez as the fifth-ranked prospect in the Rangers system entering 2014.
brinson-lewis-8068priddy-575w.jpg
Brinson, 20, will join the Pelicans soon after a breakout first half in Hickory this season. In his third professional season, the former first rounder (29th overall) from the 2012 draft is posting career-highs in average (.335), on-base percentage (.405), and slugging percentage (.579). He clubbed eight doubles, a triple, and ten homers for the Crawdads, including five in his final five games for Hickory. Brinson began the season as the number 15 ranked prospect in the Texas system according to Baseball America and was outside of the publication's Top 100 as well as Baseball Prospectus' Top 101.
Alfaro, Brinson, and Williams will all be on the active Pelicans roster within weeks.
