Myrtle Beach got 2 more home runs from Joey Gallo, but it wasn't enough in an 8-5 defeat to Lancaster

Joey Gallo had two Hrs last night, and 2 tonight
MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - The Myrtle Beach Pelicans, Class A-Advanced affiliate of the Texas Rangers had bullpen issues Thursday evening, and it cost them loss number 9.
Things started off great for the Myrtle Beach Pelicans. To start, Myrtle Beach catcher Jorge Alfaro doubled off the center field wall, which set up a Joey Gallo missile that lined out of the ball park for his first homer of the game, putting the Birds up 2-0.
In the bottom of the 3rd , Jorge Alfaro was hit by a 93 MPH fastball in the right thigh, and Joey Gallo again belted a home run, this time an opposite field shot to put MB up 4-0.
The top of the 6th saw Myrtle Beach lefty-starter Victor Payano tire and get in trouble. He surrendered a sac fly and walked in 2 runs before he was pulled in favor of Jose Leclerc, a lefty reliever, who got the Birds out of the jam still leading 4-3.
The 7th and 8th innings saw Lancaster get the tying and go ahead runs off of Jose Leclerc and Cody Ege, respectively. Ege would eventually get the loss.
In the top of the 9th, Myrtle Beach manager C Massey called upon Jason Knapp, a right-handed RP. He had one duty. Keep things where they were, the Pelicans down one, so they'd be in striking distance for the home half of the 9th. He failed miserably at his job. Knapp gave up three hits and walked a batter. Worst of all, one of those three hits was a three run home run to give Lancaster an 8-4 lead.
The Pelicans did get one run back in the bottom of the 9th but the Birds couldn't recover from the late inning runs scored by the JetHawks.
Pelican Standouts
SP- Victor Payano: 5.2 IP, 4 H, 3 ER, 3 BB, 8 K
3B- Joey Gallo: 2-4, 2 HR, 4 RBI

EMBRACE VETERANS
Un-Flock.jpg
The Myrtle Beach Pelicans and Embrace Hospice are planning to honor local World War II veterans during the 2014 season with a project called Embrace Veterans. Though the project is still in its infancy, plans include the creation of videos highlighting the stories of the Grand Strand veterans who served in WWII.
The project will culminate at Pelicans Ballpark on Friday, June 6, the 70th Anniversary of D-Day. The team will recognize all of the local WWII veterans and feature the videos before the game.
In order to create these videos, the Pelicans are asking that any local WWII veteran submit their story to the Embrace Veterans project. Applications require the name of the nominee, the military branch in which he/she served, rank, dates of service and his/her story. Videos will be produced by The Center for Military and Veterans Studies at CCU.
In addition to WWII veterans, the Pelicans will also honor all veterans from the Grand Strand with a card set giveaway on June 6. Veterans of all U.S. conflicts, deseased or living, are eligible for nomination on the card set.
Applications to nominate a veteran for both the videos and the card set can be downloaded here or picked up at the Pelicans Front Office.
"If you or someone you know served in World War II we encourage you to submit your story," stated Pelicans Corporate Sales Manager Katelyn Guild who is heading up the project. "Our goal is create a comprehensive collection of local World War II veteran stories. As such, we encourage every Grand Strand veteran to submit. Family and friends can also submit on behalf of their loved ones."
Deadline for submission is March 14, 2014. Submissions should be emailed to [email protected] or mailed to 1251 21st Avenue North, Attn: Grand Strand Heroes, Myrtle Beach, SC 29577.
More details about the project will be made available as the 2014 season approaches. For general questions about the project contact the Pelicans Front Office at 843-918-6000.

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (APRIL 18, 2014) - The Myrtle Beach Pelicans, Class A-Advanced affiliate of the Texas Rangers, are working with HTC for a second straight season to bring Backpack Buddies Monday to TicketReturn.com Field at Pelicans Ballpark. The program invites fans to bring certain essentials to the ballpark for donation on Monday home games. Those donating will receive half-price admission on their Monday game ticket.
Starting in 2004, the Backpack Buddies program aims to provide schools with nutritious, child-friendly, self-serve food designed to put in a backpack and feed a child over the weekend. The program began with a pilot program of approximately 300 children. Now, a decade later, the program provides over 1,500 meals a week across Horry County.

The Pelicans are pleased to bring back the program after a successful first year with a valued partner in HTC. To participate, fans can bring the following items to Monday night home games for half-priced admission: powdered drink mix, Ramen Noodles, Pop Tarts, individual servings of pudding, individual servings of apple sauce, fruit cups, jelly (plastic container), peanut butter (small jars), Beanie Weenies, Vienna Sausage, canned meats, cereal, raviolis (pop-top cans), mac and cheese, snack crackers, chicken noodle soup (pop top cans), and unopened containers of mustard, ketchup, and mayo.
"The Help 4 Kids organization that runs Backpack Buddies is an incredible group and we're honored to help them in their fight to ensure that the 2400+ local children have the food and nourishment the kids need," remarked Pelicans Vice President and General Manager Andy Milovich. "Barb Mains and her staff give these kids a chance to succeed in the classroom and life. She's a true hero and we're fortunate to be in a position to assist her in helping kids throughout our community."
In 2013 the Pelicans raised nearly $400,000 for various local charities. The Backpack Buddies program saw over $9,400 of those funds. This year the Pelicans have set a goal of raising $500,000 total for local charities and $10,000 for Backpack Buddies.

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - The Myrtle Beach Pelicans, Class A-Advanced affiliate of the Texas Rangers didn't have a great night on the pitching mound on Monday night as the Lancaster JetHawks knocked around 23 hits and scored 14 runs. Myrtle Beach starter Chi-Chi Gonzalez had easily the worst start of his professional career giving up 8 hits and 7 runs in just 2.2 innings. Myrtle Beach relief pitcher Jose Leclerc was the pitcher dealt with the loss, after only pitching .1 innings and giving up 3 earned runs on 3 hits.
The top of the first saw the Houston Astros' #1 prospect Carlos Correa knock in an RBI and score a run during a 2 run first inning off Myrtle Beach ace Alex "Chi-Chi" Gonzalez.
The third inning was worse. Lancaster would score 5 runs on 6 hits against Gonzalez as Chi-Chi had severe trouble locating his pitches.
Myrtle Beach went crazy in the 4th inning. Myrtle Beach LF Chris Garia (3), CF Zack Cone, 3B Joey Gallo, and C Jorge Alfaro all picked up at least 1 RBI a piece in the inning as the Myrtle Beach Birds batted around in the inning, scoring 9 runs on 8 hits and a walk. The huge inning gave the Pelicans their first lead, at 9-7.
The bottom of the 5th featured a Joey Gallo 2 out, 2 RBI double scoring 1B Preston Beck and C Jorge Alfaro, putting the Pelicans up 11-7 at home.
The Myrtle Beach happiness was short lived, however. The 6th and 7th innings were very good to Lancaster, as they scored 6 runs on 9 hits between the two innings. 13-11, JetHawks.
Both squads scored one run in the 9th inning. SS Hanser Alberto was credited with the 9th inning RBI for Myrtle Beach.

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - The Myrtle Beach Pelicans, Class A-Advanced affiliate of the Texas Rangers lost their third straight game while resting star players Joey Gallo and Jorge Alfaro. Even with those two in the lineup, a win was unlikely due to Lancaster's hot bats. The JetHawks doubled Myrtle Beach up on hits, 18-9 respectively.
The Pelicans did strike first getting a sac fly in the first inning, but in the second inning Myrtle Beach starting pitcher Sam Wolff gave up a solo shot to straight away center field that tied the ballgame at 1.
Nearly every inning saw scoring action in this one. In the top of the 3rd, Lancaster pulled away quick. Conrad Gregor, the Lancaster 1B doubled to right, knocking in 2 runs and Jordan Scott , OF, got an RBI on a fielder's choice to give the JetHawks a 4-1 lead.
Myrtle Beach outfielder Nick Williams (Texas Ranger #5 prospect) got the Birds one run back in the forth when he drove in the Myrtle Beach short stop Hanser Alberto on a hard hit single to right off of Lancaster starter Kyle Smith, who got called up to AA Corpus Christi after the game. Smith went 7.1 innings, allowing 3 earned runs while striking out 7. 4-2 JetHawks.
The Pelicans pitching staff surrendered 3 runs on 5 hits in the 5th inning, which stretched the Lancaster lead to 5.
Quickly, on to the 7th inning, where Pelicans' LF Chris Garia knocked in the final Myrtle Beach run for the night scoring RF Royce Bolinger on a deep fly ball to right that found the grass in fair territory.
Myrtle Beach brought in relief pitcher Andrew Faulkner in the ninth and he fared no better than any other Pelican pitcher that took to the mound as he gave up a 2-run bomb to 2012 #1 overall pick Carlos Correa. Lancaster would add one more run in the inning and waltz away with a 10-3 victory.

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - The Myrtle Beach Pelicans, Class A-Advanced affiliate of the Texas Rangers had late opportunities to win, but a late game mistake cost Myrtle Beach their season-worst forth straight loss. Lake Elsinore started their scoring out in the first inning against Myrtle Beach starter Luis Parra (3.70 ERA). Pelicans' Center Fielder Zach Cone misread a line drive and the ball rolled all the way to the wall allowing the Storm to get an early 1-0 lead.
Inning 3: Myrtle Beach LF Chris Garia doubled to left scoring Cone who had a lead off double. A batter later, C Jorge Alfaro lined to left field for a 2-RBI single. 3-1 Myrtle Beach.
The 6th inning saw lefty-starter Luis Parra get in to trouble and righty-reliever Abel De Los Santos made matters worse and when it was all said and done, 4 runs scored in the inning for Lake Elsinore. 5-3 LA.
In the 8th inning, the Pelicans truly had their chance to own the game. With one out, the Myrtle Beach birds loaded the bases. Myrtle Beach Manager Massey made the tough decision to suicide squeeze Mr. Nick Williams and it worked. He reached and a run scored. 5-4 LA. Then, all the pressure was put on Zach Cone and Massey. Massey, enjoying the success Nick Williams had on the suicide squeeze play, called on Cone to repeat the success and it backfired. Cone popped up the bunt to pitcher, and the next batter, David Lyon struck out. That was the final shot the Pelicans had at a win.

No doubt about it. My roster is rated as the fourth best in single A, according to the game. That technically makes this team the most talented team I've ever had. I think last year my Louisville Bats made it to number 6 in the league, but that was with people down on rehab assignments. The wins will come. I'm not worried.

Rangers send Jamie Jarmon to Myrtle Beach
JJ.jpg
MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - The Texas Rangers made the following roster move that affect the Myrtle Beach Pelicans roster.
The Pelicans have received outfielder Jamie Jarmon from Extended Spring Training.
Jarmon, 19, will make his Advanced-A level debut when he enters a ballgame with the Pelicans. He has yet to play in a game in 2014, but did spend time in Double-A earlier this year. Promoted to Frisco on May 8, he was on the RoughRiders roster until May 12 when he was sent back to Extended Spring Training; he did not play in a game for Frisco. The Rangers' second round selection in 2012 out of Indian River High School in Dagsboro, Delaware played in 37 games with the Spokane Indians in 2013, hitting .150 with one home run, three doubles, and 14 RBI. The Gatorade Delaware State Baseball Player of the Year award finalist and Gatorade Delaware State Football Player of the Year winner had committed to play baseball at the University of South Carolina before signing with the Rangers in 2012. He is now the youngest player on the Pelicans roster and the third youngest player in the Carolina League.
Jarmon will wear number 32 and will be in uniform and active for tonight's contest. With the moves, the Pelicans roster remains at 25 active players, which is the Carolina League limit.

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - The Myrtle Beach Pelicans, Class A-Advanced affiliate of the Texas Rangers played great defense and excuted at the plate to break their four game win streak on Saturday evening after a 1 hour rain delay at home in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.
Myrtle Beach 3B Joey Gallo knocked in a run in the first inning to give the Pelicans an early 1-0 lead. Myrtle Beach starting pitcher Cody Buckel got in to trouble in the 2nd inning but was able to get the ground ball he needed for a double play to dance out of danger.
In the 3rd, Buckel again got in trouble and this time it cost him one run and the Storm tied the score at 1 run a piece.

Guys I just got in from the game tonight. The real life Myrtle Beach Pelicans clinched playoffs and became the first half champions of the Carolina League. I ran out on to the field after the game to spray champagne on the players and ruined my best shoes getting the liquid sprayed right back on me. Victory cigars were smoked, and two very special and talented Myrtle Beach Pelicans announced they were getting called up to double-A tomorrow morning. Can't say the names of the players yet, but it will soon be known.
