Jorge Alfaro moves up to Double-A
Sam Stafford returns from the disabled list

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - The Texas Rangers made the following transactions on Monday that affect the roster of the Myrtle Beach Pelicans. Top catching prospect Jorge Alfaro has been promoted to the Double-A Frisco RoughRiders, and left-handed pitcher Sam Stafford has been reinstated off of the 7-day disabled list.

Alfaro, 21, entered the season ranked as the second-best prospect in the Rangers farm system by Baseball America and the number 54 overall prospect in the game. In 100 games with the Pelicans, including 75 behind the dish, the catcher slugged 13 homers and a league-leading 73 RBI. The product of Sincelejo, Colombia also clubbed 22 doubles, netted five triples, and swiped six steals. He departs as the team-leader in homers (only formerly promoted Joey Gallo hit more for Myrtle Beach) and in the midst of a seven-game home hitting streak. Alfaro is coming off a three extra-base hit game on Saturday when he homered and smacked two doubles in his first three trips to the plate against the Salem Red Sox. Carolina League teams were reluctant to run on Alfaro who cut down 26.4% of basestealers (19-for-72). The 72 attempts against him are the fewest in the league among qualifying catchers, despite Alfaro leading the league in starts behind the plate. Alfaro was a Carolina League Midseason All-Star, and for the second straight year was selected to play in the Futures Game. Texas signed Alfaro as a non-drafted international free agent in 2010.

Alfaro was also honored by the league on Monday as the Carolina League Player of the Week. He led the league in slugging (.720) and hit .400 (10-for-25) over the week with a homer, a triple, and three doubles. He drove in five runs and scored eight. In the Pelicans' 16-inning win on Wednesday, he collected four hits. He is the third different Pelicans player to pick up Player of the Week honors; Gallo won it three times, and Nick Williams won it once as well.

Stafford, 24, makes his return from the disabled list. He was placed on the DL on June 20 and missed 43 games. Before going down with injury, the Spring, Texas native pitched in 16 games, all in relief, and posted a 4.88 ERA with a 2-1 record and one save. In 31 1/3 innings, the southpaw struck out 33 and walked 29, allowing 28 hits, three of which left the yard. Between May 16 and June 2, he did not allow a run, a stretch spanning six outings and 8 2/3 innings. Stafford was selected by Texas in the 13th round of the 2012 MLB June Amateur Draft out of the University of Texas.

With the two roster moves, the Pelicans roster remains at 25 active players, which is the Carolina League limit, and includes two players on the disabled list.

The Pelicans are off Monday and open a six-game road trip in Wilmington on Tuesday night. First pitch against the Blue Rocks is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.

The Pelicans return home on August 12 and will begin a three-game set with the Carolina Mudcats.

Season Seats, Mini Plans, Flex Books, and single game tickets are available to see the Pelicans in 2014. For more information on tickets, please call (843) 918-6002, e-mail [email protected], visit www.MyrtleBeachPelicans.com, or visit the Pelicans box office, which is open Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - The Texas Rangers made the following transactions on Friday that affect the roster of the Myrtle Beach Pelicans. Outfielder Nick Williams has been promoted to Double-A Frisco. In a corresponding roster move, outfielder Ryan Cordell has been promoted from Class-A Hickory to Myrtle Beach.

Williams, 20, earns his first promotion to Double-A of his career. The slugging outfielder was the active team leader in average (.292), home runs (13), and RBI (68) upon departure. Between his time in Myrtle Beach and a three-game rehab stint in the Rookie Arizona League, Williams has posted career highs in doubles (28) and RBI (70), playing in 97 contests, 94 with the Pelicans and three with the AZL Rangers. The Galveston, Texas product earned the Carolina League Player of the Week Award for the week of July 7-13, a week that included a career-high five RBI and two-homer game game on July 8 at Carolina. In his final game with the Pelicans, he provided the only run in a 1-0 win on a solo home run against the Carolina Mudcats on Thursday night. Williams was the Rangers 2nd round selection in the 2012 MLB June Amateur Draft out of Ball High School.

Cordell, 22, is in his first full professional season and second overall pro campaign after being drafted in the 11th round of the 2013 MLB June Amateur Draft out of Liberty University. The outfielder has played 73 games this season, logging time at all three outfield spots. The Orangevale, California native hit .321 for the Hickory Crawdads with eight home runs, 18 doubles, four triples, and 40 RBI. He also has 18 steals.

With the two roster moves, the Pelicans roster is now at 24 active players, which is one below the Carolina League limit, and includes two players on the disabled list.

Myrtle Beach Pelicans (4-2, FIRST HALF CHAMPS) vs Inland Empire 66ers (3-3)

The 1st series matchup between Myrtle Beach and Inland Empire & first series following the All-star break goes to Myrtle Beach, 2 games to 1, lead by an impressive outing by Sam Wolff in game one

GAME ONE : Pitching matchup: Myrtle Beach- Sam Wolff (4-7, 6.01), Inland Empire- Nate Smith (3-5, 7.23)

GAME TWO : Pitching matchup: Myrtle Beach- Cody Buckel (9-2, 3.24), Inland Empire- Ryan Crowley (3-5, 8.90)

GAME THREE : Pitching matchup: Myrtle Beach- Luis Parra (4-3, 4.04), Inland Empire- Alex Kuedell (2-7, 8.46)

          20140818_200748.jpg
Sam Wolff pitching a complete game for the Myrtle Beach Pelicans on the road against Inland Empire

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - The Myrtle Beach Pelicans, Class A-Advanced affiliate of the Texas Rangers got a complete game shutout from righty-start Sam Wolff in game one, which set the tone for the first game of the series. After 30 pitches, Wolff had thrown only 4 balls and completed 4 innings. A 3-run 4th inning for the Myrtle Beach Pelicans would be the only run production for either side during the course of the first game back from the All-star break. In that 4th inning, RF Royce Bolinger got a 2-out, 2-RBI triple to start the scoring. SS Edwin Garcia followed him up with an RBI double and the rest is in the history books.

FINAL SCORE: Myrtle Beach 3, Inland Empire 0

In game two, the Pelican's starter Cody Buckel was roughed up for 7 total runs (4 earned) in only 2 innings following his All-star victory. The 4 runs raised his ERA to 3.53. 66er's 2B Sherman Johnson had a killer game going 4-5, with 3 runs scored. Myrtle Beach relief pitcher Ryan Bores didn't fare much better in relief of Cody Buckel in his 3 innings of work, as he allowed 4 runs (3 earned) of his own, raising his ERA to 5.66.

FINAL SCORE: Myrtle Beach 6, Inland Empire 11

          20140819_020009.jpg
Myrtle Beach catcher Kellin Deglan homers in his first start since recently being called up from low-A Hickory

In game three, the Pelican's skipper C. Massey introduced recent low-A call-up Kellin Deglan, catcher, to the starting lineup. Many of the Myrtle Beach faithful remember Kellin, who played in Myrtle Beach during the 2013 season, but didn't make the team this season as a starter because of top-prospect Jorge Alfaro getting the nod behind the dish. The Rangers wanted Delgan to get plenty of playing time, and Kellin found himself the starting catcher for the low-A Hickory Crawdads.

Another recent call-up, outfielder Ryan Cordell got his 1st hit in his 3rd start, leading the charge and being named Player Of The Game for game 3 of the road series. Myrtle Beach lefty-starter Luis Parra got knocked around as he has several times this season, for 5 runs in 5 innings. Relief pitchers Josh McElwee and Abel De Los Santos combined for the final 4 innings, allowing just 2 hits and no runs to capture the series victory for the Pelicans. C, Kellin Deglan, 1B Preston Beck, and CF Ryan Cordell all homered in game 3, and LF Chris Garia added a triple and 3 RBI's to the Myrtle Beach total.

          20140819_020255.jpg
CF Ryan Cordell plays a little "add on", hitting a solo shot on the road against Inland Empire. Myrtle Beach would score 9 runs in the game

FINAL SCORE: Myrtle Beach 6, Inland Empire 11

Myrtle Beach Pelicans (6-3, FIRST HALF CHAMPS) vs Wilmington Blue Rocks (2-6)

Pelicans take 3-game set in Wilmington behind two extra inning victories

GAME ONE : Pitching matchup: Myrtle Beach- Chad Bell (2-0, 3.62), Wilmington- Christian Binford (4-5, 5.59)

GAME TWO : Pitching matchup: Myrtle Beach- Victor Payano (5-4, 6.17), Wilmington- Miguel Almonte (6-3, 3.70)

GAME THREE : Pitching matchup: Myrtle Beach- Cody Buckel (9-3, 3.53), Wilmington- Jonathon Dziedic (1-5, 6.60)

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - The Myrtle Beach Pelicans, Class A-Advanced affiliate of the Texas Rangers won a very tight 3-game set in Wilmington, Delaware, over the Blue Rocks with all three games being decided by walk-off hits.

Game one was all about a 12th inning call by skipper C. Massey to pinch hit OF Ryan Cordell in to the game for OF Chris Garia, who hadn't looked himself at the plate all game. The call paid off, but not before a lot of good action took place during the course of the game.

Lefty-starter Chad Bell took the bump for the Pelicans in game one and pitched well despite giving up early runs in the first and fourth innings. His opposition, Chris Binford dominated the Myrtle Beach lineup with 9 strikeouts, only allowing one run in 6 innings. In the top of the 9th, with a 2-1 score in favor of the hometown Blue Rocks, OF Zach Cone lead off with a single for the Pelicans. Skipper Massey called upon 1B Preston Beck (hot streak) who had been given the night off for rest, to pinch hit for Kellin Deglan, who was recently called up and got his first start at first base as a Pelican. Beck lined to left for an RBI single, sending it to extras and making Mr. Massey a very happy manager.

Fast-forwarding to the 12th inning, Massey looked like a genious again, as he went to the bench with 2 outs and SS Edwin Garcia on 2nd after a lead off walk. THIS happened, and the Pelicans enjoyed a celebration at home plate immediately after:

Stadium Journey ranks Pelicans tops in Carolina League
Experience in Myrtle Beach takes first for fourth time
By Nathan Barnett / Myrtle Beach Pelicans

              640x360_Stadium_Journey_CL_5ltnp5jb_7wbq82ih.png

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C.- On Tuesday, Stadium Journey released its ranking of the ballparks in the Carolina League, and the Myrtle Beach Pelicans, the Class A-Advanced affiliate of the Chicago Cubs, ranked first out of the eight teams in the league. Since the publication began ranking the ballparks in the league in 2011, the Pelicans have taken the top spot each year.

Once a year Stadium Journey ranks each ballpark within its own league. They also rank the top ballpark experiences within Minor League Baseball each fall and the Top 100 stadium experiences in all of sports each winter. The rankings are based on the ratings of their official correspondents, who make a yearly visit to each ballpark. In the event of a tie, reviews of users and members serves as the primary tiebreaker.

The review of the TicketReturn.Com Field at Pelicans Ballpark opens with, "the Pelicans have done an amazing job of catering to both local die-hards and casual tourists. With the massive variety of food options and many entertainment options, TicketReturn.com Field is easily a premier minor league venue."

The review from the official correspondent ranks the ballpark experience in seven categories: Food & Beverage, Atmosphere, Neighborhood, Fans, Access, Return on Investment, and Extras. The Pelicans received four or five stars in every category, with five stars being the highest mark possible. The team earned five stars for Food & Beverage, Neighborhood, Access, and Extras.

The review concludes with, "as anyone who has been there can tell you, Myrtle Beach is a great spot for a vacation, and adding a night out at the ballpark is a no-brainer."

In addition to being the top-ranked ballpark experience in the Carolina League the last four years, the Pelicans have ranked third in all of Minor League Baseball in each of the last three seasons. The ranking for the 2014 season will be published this October.

As for the Top 100 list for stadium experiences in all of sports, the Pelicans opened at the number 31 spot in 2011 but pulled into the top 25 for 2012 and 2013. The team recorded its highest ranking in 2012 (#19). The Top 100 list for 2014 will be published in January.

The Pelicans return to TicketReturn.Com Field at Pelicans Ballpark in 2015 as they look to defend their Southern Division Championship Title. 2015 marks 17th season for the franchise and first as the Class A-Advanced affiliate of the Chicago Cubs. For information on tickets to see the Pelicans in 2015, please call (843) 918-6000, e-mail [email protected], or visit www.MyrtleBeachPelicans.com.

Myrtle Beach Pelicans (8-4, FIRST HALF CHAMPS) vs Inland Empire 66ers (5-7)

Myrtle Beach stays hot, sweeps 3-game set against Inland Empire

GAME ONE : Pitching matchup: Myrtle Beach- Sam Wolff (5-7, 5.36), Inland Empire- Ryan Crowley (4-5, 8.91)

GAME TWO : Pitching matchup: Myrtle Beach- Luis Parra (5-3, 4.34), Inland Empire- Alex Kuedell (2-8, 8.91)

GAME THREE : Pitching matchup: Myrtle Beach- Victor Payano (5-4, 6.32), Inland Empire- Tyler De Loach (2-6, 6.69)

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - The Myrtle Beach Pelicans, Class A-Advanced affiliate of the Texas Rangers brought out the brooms on the visiting 66ers, and now have beaten the Inland Empire 5 out of 6 games played against them.

Myrtle Beach short stop Luis Mendez got things going in the series in game one in the 2nd inning with a sac fly, scoring outfielder Zach Cone to kick things off. 2 innings later, eventual player of the game award winner, catcher Kellin Deglan, blasted a 410 foot sky-bomb to straight away center field, giving the birds a 2-0 lead.

Myrtle Beach catcher Kellin Deglan says "see you later baseball" with this towering shot in the 4th inning of the Myrtle Beach 4-2 victory over visiting Inland Empire

Pelican's starter Sam Wolff didn't allow a hit until the 5th inning, when he allowed a lead off double. He'd allow 2 runs on 5 hits while only walking only 1 batter and striking out 6 in 5.1 innings.

In the bottom of the 7th with the game tied at 2 a-piece, Myrtle Beach would get the go-ahead and winning runs on a 2-RBI double by LF Chris Garia, who had previously been in a RISP slump. RP Jose Monegro got the "W" for the Pelicans, throwing 1.2 innings of hit-less baseball while striking out 2.

LF Chris Garia can do more than just run really, really fast. He can also hit. Here's the eventual game winner against the 66ers in game one of the home series for Myrtle Beach

FINAL SCORE: Myrtle Beach 4, Inland Empire 2

Game two was a long, 14 inning affair in the city by the beach. Outfielder Ryan Cordell got his only hit of the ballgame in the 14th inning when he drove in the winning run, Lewis Brinson, who lead off the inning with a double off the right field wall. Micheal De Leon, a 17 year old infielder making his debut in Myrtle Beach went 2-5 with an RBI and a stolen base in his Pelican debut. DH Lewis Brinson finished a triple shy of the cycle. Luis Parra got roughed around a little bit on the bump for the Birds, lasting just four innings while giving up 9 hits and 4 earned runs, however, righty-relief man Justin Sprenger turned in an excellent performance on the hill, netting himself the win after pitching 3 hit-less innings.

CF Lewis Brinson homers to lead off the 5th inning in game 2 against the 66ers in Myrtle Beach. The Pelicans would hold on to win in extra innings by one run

FINAL SCORE: Myrtle Beach 10, Inland Empire 9

Game three was a high-scoring affair. Myrtle Beach starting pitcher, the lefty Victor Payano, got crushed for 9 hits and 9 runs in 3.2 innings, leaving the rest up to the bullpen and the Myrtle Beach offense. Thankfully for him, neither party let him down as the Pelicans would go on to score 11 runs and the bullpen would combine for a shutout for the remainder of the game following his departure.

The Birds offensive charge was lead by 3-headed monster Chris Garia (LF), Chris Grayson (DH) and Nick Vickerson (3B). The three Pelican hitters combined for a 6-12 day, including 8 RBIs, 2 HRs, 2 doubles and a triple. CF Ryan Cordell also had an impressive day offensively, going 3-3 with 3 runs and a walk.

FINAL SCORE: Myrtle Beach 12, Inland Empire 9

Prostate Cancer Awareness Night named Promotion of the Year
Ballpark digest honored Pelicans with Best Promotion of 2014

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C.- On Wednesday, Ballpark Digest continued its announcement of the yearly awards, recognizing the Myrtle Beach Pelicans' Prostate Cancer Awareness Night as the Promotion of the Year.

Prostate Cancer Awareness night made local, regional, and national headlines when the Pelicans Vice President and General Manager Andy Milovich accepted a challenge to receive an in-game prostate exam while singing "Take Me Out to the Ballgame" during the team's game on July 24. After being jokingly challenged by Dave Priest and Liz Callaway on WRNN Hot Talk 99.5, Milovich later agreed to the exam if the "Fierce Fallon" Facebook Page had to reach 10,000 'Likes' by the day of the game.

Fallon Emery, for whom the page is named, is a ten-year-old Carolina Forrest native battling brain cancer. The promotion and support of Fallon went viral, and the page blew past the 10,000 'Likes' goal nearly three days before the game.

Media coverage of the promotion leading up to the night and following the game included national outlets such as ESPN, The Today Show, CNN Morning Express, Sports Illustrated, New York Post, The Washington Post, NBC Sports, Deadspin.com, Fox Sports Southwest, MLB Network, and Orlando Sentinel. The Daily Mail in London, England picked up the story, and Milovich was interviewed by radio shows across the country and even north of the border in Toronto, Canada.

On the night of the game, the Pelicans passed out 1,000 "Prostate Exam Reminders," foam fingers with a ribbon reminder attached. Milovich conducted on-air interviews with Pelicans Radio Broadcaster Nathan Barnett before and after the exam and sang to the fans in the park and the radio audience during the seventh inning stretch.

"Turning Prostate Cancer Awareness Night into something that garnered nationwide headlines and raised money for a worthy cause is quite the feat," said Kevin Reichard, Ballpark Digest publisher. "By pushing fans to support a local kid with medical challenges of her own and then turning it into a major event makes this a truly noteworthy promotion."

"Prostate Cancer Awareness Night was an unbelievable experience that originated from a joke during a weekly radio appearance," said Milovich. "Thanks to the power of social media, it generated international awareness for an incredibly important men's health issue in less than a week.

"Fallon Emery is an incredibly special girl that means a lot to me and our community. Tying this promotion into a way to help her was very important to me because of my family's relationship with her," Milovich said. "To hear her say 'This was the greatest day of my life' after our Coaches vs. Cancer Night to benefit her speaks to the power of sports and the obligation we all share to benefit our communities."

Besides raising $6,500 for Fallon Emery, the promo also raised awareness of prostate cancer in the community. Prostate cancer survivors, friends and family members of those who have been lost, and those inspired to undergo their first test reached out to the Pelicans after the event.

"It's incredibly humbling to hear someone say 'you definitely saved someone's life today,' but we embraced the promotion with the thought that 'if it could allow one child to have a father with whom they could play catch, then it's worth it,'" Milovich added.

Prostate cancer is the most common non-skin cancer in America, striking one in seven men in their lifetime. However, with early detection, prostate cancer has a 97% cure rate.

The promotion not only received incredible media attention but also spread within the Minor League Baseball community. Executives with the Charleston Riverdogs (Dave Echols), Lake Elsinore Storm (Dave Oster), Savannah Sand Gnats (John Katz), and Erie SeaWolves (Greg Coleman) also underwent the "Two-Knuckle Challenge," as it has been dubbed, singing "Take Me Out to the Ballgame" while undergoing a prostate exam at their own ballparks.

"There's a lot of heart in the baseball community, and this promotion is a prime example," added Reichard. "No one associates fun with a prostate exam, but the Pelicans tackled a tough subject and turned it into a successful, impactful promo."

After sweeping Inland Empire at home, your Myrtle Beach Pelicans took 2 out of 3 at home against the Wilmington Blue Rocks. After a travel day on Tuesday, July 9th, the Pelicans made their arrival in Lancaster, California to take on the JetHawks, who nearly knocked the Birds away from the first place crown in the first half of the season. The Pelicans and JetHawks split the series 2 games a-piece in an exciting back and forth series.

LF Chris Garia made the Future's Game and started in left field for the World team

Back home in South Carolina, the Myrtle Beach Pelicans hosted the Lake Elsinore Storm for a four game set. After the Storm took it to the Pelicans in game one, winning 6-0, the Birds flipped the coin the second game, winning 6-0 themselves and then won the next two games of the series for a 3 out of 4 series victory before heading back to Lancaster, for another four game set. The Pelicans won game two 3-2, but then lost the other 3 games in the series by a combined 17 runs. Ouch.

On July 22nd Myrtle Beach returned home for a quick 3 game set against the last place Stockton Ports, outscoring them 15-10 in sweeping fashion. The Pelicans would finish up the excellent month of July on a seven game road trip. The first four were against Lake Elsinore and the Pelicans didn't mess around with the Storm on the road, winning the first three games of the series before falling 2-7 in the finale. Lefty Luis Parra didn't pitch bad, but still was saddled with the loss. Myrtle Beach finished off the month with another sweep of the lowly Stockton Ports, the second sweep of the Ports in the month.

                      STRUGGLING PLAYERS
2B Christopher Bostick - Bostick had a rough month overall, but things really fell apart the last two weeks of the month. Christopher hit .196 in 97 at bats for the month of July.
SP Victor Payano - "Vic" hasn't been good this year, and July showcased it. His already high ERA was 9.36 for the month of July in 25 innings.

                      HOT PLAYERS
LF Ryan Cordell - Beginner's luck? I don't know, but Pelicans' fans loved the numbers Ryan put up in his first month in advanced single-A. The left fielder hit .344 in 93 at-bats and drove in 15 runs.
RP Abel De Los Santos - Abel had a very strong finish to the month and finished with a 3.21 ERA over the course of the month. He also rang up 12 batters in 14 innings out of the strong Myrtle Beach bullpen.

                      AA- JOEY GALLO UPDATE
Boy, would we love to still see this guy in the Pelicans uniform. He crushed the ball in his first full month of AA baseball, leading AA in home runs, while hitting .361 with 23 RBIs in just 72 at-bats.

                        Josh McElwee gets Double-A call-up
Promotion highlights busy transaction day for Pelicans

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - The Texas Rangers made the following transactions on Tuesday that affect the roster of the Myrtle Beach Pelicans. Right-handed pitcher Josh McElwee was promoted to Double-A Frisco. In a series of additional moves, outfielder Chris Garia has been placed on the 7-day disabled list, southpaw reliever Cody Ege returns from the temporary inactive list, and outfielder Chris Grayson joins the Pelicans for a third stint from Double-A Frisco.

McElwee, 25, earns his first Double-A promotion and will pitch for his third different team this year when he debuts with the RoughRiders. McElwee began the season in Extended Spring Training before a May assignment to Class-A Hickory, where he went 2-0 with a 4.25 ERA in 25 appearances and posted one of the best strikeout rates in the South Atlantic League, fanning 57 hitters in 36.0 innings. After six weeks with the Crawdads, the Rangers promoted the Andrews, South Carolina product to Myrtle Beach on July 18 where he shut down Carolina League opposition in his month with the team. McElwee started his Pelicans campaign with ten scoreless outings, finally allowing a run in his eleventh appearance . The Rangers selected McElwee in the 12th round of the 2012 MLB June Amateur Draft out of Newberry College. He had spent parts of each of his three professional years in Myrtle Beach, but his upcoming stint will mark his first action above the Class A-Advanced level.

McElwee is the 15th Pelican to be promoted to Frisco this season. He joins (in order of promotion) Ryan Bores, Edwin Garcia, Keone Kela, Odubel Herrera, Grayson, Joey Gallo, Chi Chi Gonzalez, Will Lamb, Alexander Claudio, Hanser Alberto, Martire Garcia, Andrew Faulkner, Jorge Alfaro, and Nick Williams as players who have been promoted from Myrtle Beach to Frisco. Bores, Garcia, and Grayson are all back with the club. Claudio has since been promoted to Triple-A and now the majors, where is a member of the active roster of the Texas Rangers.

Garia, 21, makes his first trip to the disabled list of the season in the midst of a breakout campaign. The outfielder is hitting .284 in 101 games for the Birds, logging time at all three outfield positions, playing the majority of his games in center field. He leads the league in stolen bases (45) and holds the single-season record for steals in a season in team history. The Willemstad, Curaçao native is also second in the circuit in runs scored (75) trailing only Salem's Matty Johnson.

Ege, 23, was away from the team for the three-day series against Stockton on the temporary inactive list. In 33 outings, the southpaw has a 4.24 ERA. In four August outings, however, the Cherokee, Iowa product was unscored upon and allowed just two hits in five innings with no walks and eight strikeouts.

Grayson, 24, has split the entire 2014 campaign between Myrtle Beach and Frisco with, including this upcoming stint, three spells with each squad. In 44 games with the Double-A club, Grayson is hitting .241 with a pair of home runs and 20 RBI. Across his two previous stretches with the Birds, the Monroe, Louisiana native is batting .291 with a homer and ten runs knocked in over 31 contests. He has ten steals between the two stops, three of which have come during his time on the Grand Strand.

With the transactions, the Pelicans roster remains at 24 active players, which is one below the Carolina League limit, and includes two players on the disabled list.

The Pelicans open a series with the Wilmington Blue Rocks on Tuesday night at 7:05 p.m. It is also $2sday Brewsday, where there will be $2.00 draught craft beers from 6:00-8:00 pm. It is also Circus Night at the ballpark.

Season Seats, Mini Plans, Flex Books, and single game tickets are available to see the Pelicans in 2014. MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - In conjunction with the Chicago Cubs, the Myrtle Beach Pelicans, the Class A-Advanced affiliate of the Chicago Cubs, are pleased to announce the field staff for the Pelicans for the upcoming 2015 season. Mark Johnson leads the coaching staff as the manager in the team's first year as a Cubs affiliate. Most recently, Johnson was named the Manager of the Year in the Midwest League for his work the Cubs' Class-A Kane County Cougars in 2014. He is joined by David Rosario (pitching coach), Mariano Duncan (hitting coach), Chris Gutierrez (assistant coach), and Peter Fagan (athletic trainer). Rosario and Gutierrez both served with Johnson in Kane County in 2014.

Johnson, 39, enters his fifth season with the Cubs and will be the sixth Pelicans manager in team history. The former big league catcher spent the last two seasons as the manager at Class-A Kane County, where he led the Cougars last season to a minor league best 91-49 record and a Midwest League championship after sweeping through the playoffs with a 7-0 record. He was named Baseball America's Minor League Manager of the Year and Midwest League Manager of the Year for his efforts. Johnson began his managerial career in 2011 with Class A-Short Season Boise where he took the Hawks to back-to-back postseason appearances, their first playoff berths since 2006. In his four seasons as a manger, Johnson has taken his team the playoffs three times.

The new Pelicans skipper immediately joined the coaching ranks after retiring as a player in 2010, the conclusion of a 17-year professional playing career. He played in parts of eight major league seasons with four clubs: the Chicago White Sox, Oakland Athletics, Milwaukee Brewers, and St. Louis Cardinals. In 332 big league games, Johnson hit .218, 16 home runs, and knocked in 83 runs. The White Sox first round pick from 1994 has Carolina League experience, having played for Prince William in 1996 and Winston-Salem in 1997 while a member of the White Sox organization. He also played in the Cubs system for Triple-A Iowa (2005, 2009-2010). Originally from Wheat Ridge, Colorado, Johnson makes his offseason home in Perry, Georgia and graduated from Warner Robins High School in Warner Robins, Georgia.

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - Myrtle Beach Pelicans shortstop Hanser Alberto was named one of nine recipients of the Rawlings Gold Glove Award® for his defensive excellence on Monday. Alberto spent the first half of 2014 with the Pelicans and parts of the 2012 and 2013 seasons as well. Alberto is the only Pelican to win the award during the four-year Rangers era and only the second Texas Rangers minor league to win it.

Alberto posted a career-best .979 fielding percentage over a 119-game span between Myrtle Beach and the Double-A Frisco RoughRiders, with 192 putouts and 356 assists. Alberto began the 2014 season with the Pelicans where he split time between shortstop and third base. After 70 games with the Pelicans, Alberto has logged 50 with the RoughRiders, all of them coming at shortstop. He was particularly effective at shortstop, where he has played primarily in his career, posting a .980 fielding percentage across 114 games with just 11 errors in 547 chances.

"Congratulations to the nine outstanding Minor League Baseball players who deservedly won the 2014 Rawlings Gold Glove Award," said Mike Thompson, Executive Vice President and General Manager of Baseball for St. Louis-based Rawlings in a press release issued from the Minor League Baseball Office. "Minor League Baseball is and will always continue to be a great partner of Rawlings, and we knew the Rawlings Gold Glove Award would be a popular goal for many young players when we decided to rekindle this award platform in 2011."

"Each year, it is a privilege to join in the announcement of the Rawlings Gold Glove Award® and help recognize the top defensive players in Minor League Baseball," added Pat O'Conner, President & CEO of Minor League Baseball. "All nine of these players displayed extraordinary skills at their positions this season, and on behalf of Minor League Baseball, I congratulate them on this outstanding accomplishment."

Nine awards are handed out on an annual basis, one for each position to a player from one of the ten domestic-based, full-season MiLB leagues, and Alberto took the honors for the shortstop spot. Each player will receive his own Rawlings Gold Glove Award®, modeled after the iconic award given to Major League Baseball's top defensive players, during the 2015 season.

The Myrtle Beach Pelicans, Class A-Advanced affiliate of the Texas Rangers would have to learn to play in the surprisingly cool whether of August after a hot month of July, starting with a 4 game set at home, in Myrtle Beach against the Lake Elsinore Storm. The Birds took the first two games of the series, lost game 3, and then won game 4 behind the left arm of Victor Payano.

The Pelicans then traveled to sunny Palm Beach, Florida for a 3 game stent and The Battle Of The Beach Part III. Myrtle Beach won the first two series' against Palm Beach, and wouldn't disappoint in the third. The Pelicans fell 4-6 in game one, before stealing the next two away from the Cardinals.

Myrtle Beach wouldn't stop winning. The next victim of the C.Massey managed Pelicans was the Modesto Nuts. Myrtle Beach drove the Nuts nutty, sweeping a 3 game set on the road before returning home to South Carolina where the Pelicans would cool off their winning ways, just as the temperature cooled off on the Carolina coast.

Palm Beach would be the first team to get a crack at Myrtle Beach, to kick off the 6 game home stand on the grand strand. After Palm Beach had been controlled by Myrtle Beach all season, they finally broke through and took games one and three, winning their first series of the year against Myrtle Beach, including an 8-0 shutout in which Myrtle Beach only got 3 hits. "That series in Myrtle Beach was big for our guys", said Palm Beach Manager Dann Bilardello. "Myrtle Beach had owned us this season, and taking 2-3 from them on their home field helps take the sting off a little."

The Modesto Nuts were the next team to get their revenge at the hands of the Pelicans. The Nuts took 2 out of 3, which meant the Pelicans went 2-4 on the home stand, the first time Myrtle Beach had lost a home stand since the middle of May.

Back on the road at Lake Elsinore, the Birds dropped 3 out of 4, including a 6-13 whooping in which right-hander Ryan Bores took a tough loss and a big hit to his ERA. The cold streak would continue as the Stockton Ports took 2 out of 3 in the very next series. The Pelicans were 3-7 in their previous 10 games at the end of August before a very important series against Lancaster.

The Lancaster JetHawks entered the 4 game series 4 games behind behind Myrtle Beach for the 2nd-half division title. The 'Hawks won game 1 in blowout fashion, 4-14, narrowing down the chase for the 2nd-half division title to just three games. Lancaster would need to win the next three to tie Myrtle Beach in the division. Safe to say, it wouldn't happen. The Myrtle Beach Pelicans stopped the skid and won the final three games of the series to seal up the division, outscoring the JetHawks 25-10 in those final three games of the series.

JUST IN SIDE THE LINE, BIRDS WIN! The Myrtle Beach Pelicans would go on to win 3 out of 4 games against the Lancaster JetHawks to clinch the 2nd half championship

The final day of the month of August, the Pelicans would begin the final series of the year with an 8-2 victory, with Sam Wolff advancing his record to 11-10. Wolff and the bullpen combined for a pretty good outing, allowing 7 hits and just the two runs.
