                      Game #18

                      ARIZONA 4, PITTSBURGH 2

Welington Castillo had a big night for the DBacks.

                      4/22/16
Phoenix, AZ (AP) – The Arizona Diamondbacks opened up a ten game homestand with a 4-2 victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates. Welington Castillo paced the offense going 2 for 4 with with a double, and home run.

David Peralta would get the DBacks on the board in the first as he singled home Paul Goldschmidt. Goldschmidt would then drive in Jean Segura in the third as he beat out a double play, to make it 2-0.

The Pirates would break the seal in the top of the fourth. Josh Harrison singled and Andrew McCutchen doubled to center. Starling Marte then grounded out to second, allowing Harrison to score. Shelby Miller would then work out of the inning with the lead intact.

Paul Goldschmidt would then drive in his second on the night in the bottom of the fifth. He singled home Yasmany Tomas, who opened the frame with a double off of Francisco Lariano.

The Pirates would load the bases in the top of the six, but could only push across one run on a John Jaso sacrifice fly to right, cutting the DBacks lead to 3-2.

But immediately in the bottom of the inning, Arizona pushed it back to two as Welington Castillo hit a long solo home run to left, then gave a nice stare and bat flip.

The Diamondback bullpen would excellent as Robbie Ray and Brad Zeigler shut down the Bucs over the final three innings. Shelby Miller (1-0) picked up his first win, throwing six innings and allowing the two runs on five hits. He struck out six, while walking three. Brad Zeigler earned his fifth save with a perfect ninth as Arizona won its eighth game in their last ten.

The series resumes on Saturday evening with red-hot Rubby De La Rosa (3-0, 0.87) facing Jeff Locke (1-1, 3.72).

                        Game #19

                        ARIZONA 7, PITTSBURGH 6

Welington Castillo and the DBacks walk it off.

                        4/23/16
Phoenix, AZ (AP) – The Arizona Diamondbacks spotted the Pittsburgh Pirates a 5-0 lead, then stormed back with the long ball and won it in walk off fashion, 7-6 at Chase Field on Saturday Night. Welington Castillo's RBI single in the bottom of the ninth sent the DBacks to their ninth win in their last twelve outings.

This one did not start out well for Rubby De La Rosa, or the Diamondbacks. De La Rosa, who has been red hot in April, did not have his best stuff on Saturday night, allowing five runs in 2 1/3 innings, and leaving after taking a line drive off of his throwing arm in the third. He gave up two, two-run home runs to Starling Marte as the Pirates built a 5-0 lead after two and a half innings.

But this Diamondback club did not fold. With the roof open, and the wind blowing out, Chase Field is a hitters paradise. The Dbacks would plate three in the bottom of the third, and left the bases loaded when Phil Gosselin lined out to third to end the inning.

It would remain 5-3 until the seventh when Paul Goldschmidt hit his sixth home run on the year, a solo shot to left to cut the lead to 5-4.

In the eighth, David Peralta came off the bench and hit a pinch hit solo home run off of Pirates reliever Arquimedes Caminero, to tie the game at 5-5.

But in the top of the ninth, Francisco Cervelli hit a solo home run to left center off of Evan Marshall to put the Pirates back up 6-5 and it looked like their valiant comeback would be wasted.

In the bottom of the ninth, Jake Lamb hit the first pitch that he saw into the right field seats off of Pirates closer Mark Melancon. It was the sixth home run of the ball game. Yasmany Tomas followed that up with a double to left center and was replaced by a pinch runner in Socrates Brito. After Melancon got Paul Goldschmidt and A.J. Pollack to fly out, Welington Castillo hit a 1-1 fastball back up the middle into center, scoring Brito and sending the DBack's fans home with the win.

After the game it was announced that Rubby De La Rosa would be placed on the 15-day DL with a bruised pitching arm. Starting pitcher Tyler Wagner had his contract purchased from Triple-A Reno and he was recalled by the Diamondbacks. He will likely go to the long relief role, with Robbie Ray taking De La Rosa's spot in the rotation.

The series concludes on Sunday afternoon as Arizona goes for the sweep with Archie Bradley (1-1, 3.72) facing John Niese (1-2, 4.67).

                          PITTSBURGH 6, ARIZONA 3

Andrew McCutchen slides into third with a two-run ninth inning triple.

                          4/24/16
Phoenix, AZ (AP) – The Pittsburgh Pirates exacted a bit of revenge on Sunday afternoon, as they rallied late to salvage the final game of a three game weekend series at Chase Field, defeating the Arizona Diamondbacks 6-3. Andrew McCutcheon hit a double and triple, driving in three to lead the Pirates to the victory.

Pittsburgh broke a five game losing streak, and ended a three game DBacks winning streak.

The Pirates got off to a quick start off of Archie Bradley, scoring twice in the first. Andrew McCutcheon hit a ground rule double, scoring Gregory Polanco. Starling Marte followed that up with a sacrifice fly to make it 2-0.

Arizona would strike in the second, scoring three times to take the lead. Socrates Brito hit a sacrifice fly, scoring A.J. Pollack with Arizona's first run. With two outs, Chris Owings hit a line drive to left that Starling Marte could not catch, allowing both Jake Lamb and Nick Ahmed to score.

It would remain 3-2 all the way into the eighth inning. With both starters gone, this one was up to the bullpens. With one out in the top of the eighth, McCutheon hit one deep to right that David Peralta misplayed, allowing McCutheon to reach third. Tyler Clippard come on in relief of Randall Delgado and walked Starling Marte and John Jaso to load the bases. Francisco Cervelli hit a sacrifice fly to right to tie it at 3-3. Clippard then got David Freese to ground out to end the inning.

Manager Chip Hale brought in Andrew Chafin in the ninth and it didn't go well. Jordy Mercer tripled to open the inning. Chris Stewart singled home Mercer to put the Pirates ahead. One out later, Josh Harrison singled to left to end Chafin's afternoon. Brad Zeigler came on and gave up a two-run triple to Andrew McCutcheon to blow it open.

Mark Melancon would pitch a perfect ninth to pick up his fourth save.

The DBacks (11-9) will now host St. Louis (6-12) for a four game series at Chase Field beginning Monday night.

                                ST. LOUIS 8, ARIZONA 2

Jaime Garcia was effective in slowing down the red-hot Arizona bats.

                                4/25/16
Phoenix, AZ (AP) – The St. Louis Cardinals took advantage of a leaky Arizona bullpen to take game one of a four game series in the desert, 8-2 on Monday night at Chase Field. Jaime Garcia went 8 2/3 innings, holding the DBacks to just two runs on eight hits.

St. Louis jumped on Zack Greinke in the first inning. Kolten Wong doubled off the wall in center, then scored on a two-out Matt Holiday single to right, when David Peralta bobbled the ball.

The Diamondbacks would tie it up in the second as Nick Ahmed singled home Yasmany Tomas, who had walked and reached third on a Jean Segura single.

Back-to-back doubles by Aledmys Diaz and pitcher Jaime Garcia put the Cardinals back in front in the fifth. Garcia would advance to third on a Greinke wild pitch and scored on a Randal Grichuk ground out.

The Cardinals would put this one away in the ninth, scoring five times on the dreadful Arizona bullpen. Tyler Clippard and Brad Zeigler shared the pitching duties in the ninth and saw their ERAs balloon to 6.14 and 7.45 respectively.

Zack Greinke dropped to (1-4) and saw his ERA rise to 4.72. He allowed the three earned runs in five innings. He surrendered six hits, struck out eight and walked one.

The Cardinals saw all eight positional players record hits, with Wong and Carpenter driving in two each.

The series resumes on Tuesday evening with Mike Leake (0-2, 5.79) facing Patrick Corbin (1-2, 5.24).
