    Game #22

    ARIZONA 4, ST. LOUIS 0

David Peralta unloads on a Mike Leake hanging curveball.

    4/26/16
Phoenix, AZ (AP) – The Arizona Diamondbacks evened their series with the St. Louis Cardinals on Tuesday evening as Patrick Corbin tossed a gem and the DBacks won 4-0 at Chase Field. Corbin tossed seven shutout innings, to pick up his second straight win, ending a two game DBacks losing streak.

David Peralta got the DBacks going in the second, leading off and hitting a long solo home run to left center. Red-hot Paul Goldschmidt would make it 3-0 in the third, lining a two-out single to center, scoring both Patrick Corbin and A.J. Pollack.

The DBacks would add some insurance in the seventh as A.J. Pollack singled to center, stole second, and scored on a Yasmany Tomas single.

Josh Collmenter made his 2016 debut for the DBacks out of the bullpen in the eighth. He was recalled from an injury rehab assignment at Single-A Vasalia on Monday night after a leg injury to third basemen Branden Drury. Collmenter tossed one plus innings, allowing three hits and striking out two.

The series continues on Wednesday evening with Adam Wainwright (0-2, 3.28) facing Shelby Miller (1-0, 2.91).

        Game #23

        ARIZONA 4, ST. LOUIS 0

Shelby Miller tossed a complete game shutout on Wednesday evening.

        4/27/16
Phoenix, AZ (AP) – Shelby Miller was dominant on Wednesday evening, tossing a complete game shutout in Arizona's 4-0 victory over the St. Louis Cardinals at Chase Field. Miller threw 123 pitches, scattered just four hits, striking out eight and allowing no walks.

Arizona (13-10) would get all the run support that they would need for Shelby Miller in the bottom of the first inning. Socrates Brito singled to open the inning and moved to third on a Chris Owings single. He would score on a Paul Goldschmidt sacrifice fly to right.

David Peralta would drive in Socrates Brito with an RBI double in the bottom of the third. Paul Goldschmidt was thrown out at home on the play. Jake Lamb would later reach on an error by shortstop Aledmys Diaz, allowing Peralta to score to make it 3-0.

Shelby Miller would help his own cause in the seventh, opening the inning up with a ringing double to right. He would score on a Chris Owings single to make it 4-0.

The series wraps on Thursday evening with Carlos Martinez (2-0, 4.08) facing Robbie Ray (1-0, 0.68).

          Game #24

          ARIZONA 9, ST. LOUIS 8 (12)

A.J. Pollack trots home with the winning run in the bottom of the 12th.

          4/28/16
Phoenix, AZ (AP) – The Arizona Diamondbacks finished off the St. Louis Cardinals on Thursday evening at Chase Field, taking the final game of their four game mid-week series 9-8 in twelve innings. Welington Castillo singled to right with the bases loaded to drove home the winning run in a wild one.

Matt Carpenter got the Cardinals off to a quick start, homering to left in the top of the first off of spot starter Robbie Ray. Carpenter would make it 2-0 in the third, doubling to center and driving in Jeremy Hazelbaker, who had reached on a Chris Owings throwing error.

A.J. Pollack would get the DBacks on the board in the bottom half of the third, hitting an RBI single to center. Paul Goldschmidt would tie it with an RBI single to left that saw Chris Owings thrown out at third to end the inning.

Back-to-back doubles from Brandon Moss and Jedd Gyorko would put St. Louis back in front in the sixth. That lead was short lived. Chris Owings singled home A.J. Pollack, who opened the bottom half with a triple to center. Jake Lamb then hit a two-run bomb to right center, making it 5-3 Arizona.

They would extend the lead to 7-3 in the seventh as David Peralta hit a pinch hit two-run home run to right off of Jonathan Broxton.

But Arizona's bullpen struck again. Newly called up Tyler Wagner made his DBack debut, and it was not good. He walked Matt Carpenter and gave up a two-run bomb to Matt Holliday. Jedd Gyorko and Yadier Molina then singled to end Wagner's night. Andrew Chafin came on and gave up a ground-rule double to Randal Grichuk, to cut the DBack lead to 7-6. Aledmys Diaz then hit a pinch hit, two-run double to center to put St. Louis up 8-7.

Just when it appeared that the Dbacks were dead from their gas can of a bullpen, Welington Castillo ht a two-out solo home run in the bottom of the eighth off of Kevin Siegrist to tie the game at 8-8.

Arizona would finally get some outs from Tyler Clippard, Brad Zeigler and Randall Delgado out of their bullpen. That would set up the DBacks to win it in the 12th. A.J. Pollack hit a one-out double to left. After Chris Owings struck out, Paul Goldschmidt was intentionally walked. Jake Lamb then drew a walk to load the bases. Welington Castillo then laced a single to right to score Pollack with the winning run.

Arizona won three of four from the Cardinals, and has now won five straight series after losing their first two of 2016. Up next is a three game weekend series with Colorado to close out their ten game homestand.

                  Game #25

                  ARIZONA 4, COLORADO 3

The DBacks mob Welington Castillo at home after his walk-off home run wins it.

                  4/29/16
Phoenix, AZ (AP) – The Arizona Diamondbacks used more late inning heroics to move to within a game of first place on Friday night as Welington Castillo blasted a walk-off home run in the bottom of the ninth as the Arizona Diamondbacks defeated the Colorado Rockies 4-3 at Chase Field. The win was the DBacks fourth straight.

The Rox grabbed the lead in the third after Charlie Blackmon doubled, then stole third and scored on a DJ LeMahieu sacrifice fly.

Arizona would take its first lead in the fourth when Welington Castillo hit his first home run of the game and third on the season to left center, a two-run shot to put the DBacks up 2-1. They would extend that lead to 3-1 in the fifth as A.J. Pollack singled home Jean Segura.

Colorado would claw back into it beginning in the sixth. Ben Paulsen hit a solo home run to right to cut the lead to 3-2. They would tie it in the seventh as Carlos Gonzalez doubled home Charlie Blackmon. Both runs came off of reliever Daniel Hudson, after Archie Bradley left the game after just 4+ innings.

The suspect Arizona bullpen held up in this one, as Evan Marshall, Andrew Chafin and Randall Delgado held the Rox scoreless over the final two innings. That set the stage for Welington Castillo's heroics, as he launched a 3-2 pitch over the wall in right off of Boone Logan.

Castillo went 3 for 5 with a double and two home runs, driving in three.

The series resumes on Saturday evening with Chris Rusin (0-2, 2.35) facing a struggling Zack Greinke (1-4, 4.72).

                    ARIZONA 7, COLORADO 1

David Peralta unloaded on a Chris Rusin curveball.

                    4/30/16
Phoenix, AZ (AP) – The Arizona Diamondbacks ran their winning streak to a season high five games on Saturday evening with a 7-1 victory over the last place Colorado Rockies at Chase Field. Welington Castillo led the way offensively, hitting three doubles and driving in three in the victory.

Jake Lamb hit an RBI single in the second, driving home Welington Castillo, who had hit one of his three doubles. Yasmany Tomas would make it 2-0, scoring on a (6-4-3) double play ball hit into by Chris Owings.

David Peralta added to the DBacks lead in the third, smashing a long solo home run to right off of Chris Rusin. It was Peralta's sixth on the season.

Back-to-back doubles from Ben Paulsen and Trevor Story got the Rox on the board in the fourth off of Zack Greinke. But Grienke shut them down after that, picking up his second win of 2016. He went seven innings, allowing the lone run on five hits. He struck out nine, while walking just one.

Welington Castillo hit a two-run double in the fifth, and an RBI double in the seventh. He has been red-hot, just like the DBacks, since an ice cold start to April. He is 6 for 8 with four doubles and two home runs with six RBIs in the first two games of this series.

Arizona (16-10) will go for the sweep on Sunday afternoon in the final game of their ten game homestand as Yohan Flande (0-0, 4.76) will face Patrick Corbin (2-2, 3.99).

                        ARIZONA 9, COLORADO 6

David Peralta hit another home run on Sunday afternoon.

                        5/1/16
Phoenix, AZ (AP) – The Arizona Diamondbacks finished off a three game sweep of the last place Colorado Rockies on Sunday afternoon with a thrilling 9-6 victory at Chase Field. Paul Goldschmidt led the way, going 3 for 4 with a home run and driving in two.

Arizona (17-10) won their sixth straight on Sunday afternoon, finishing a ten game home stand at (8-2) and moving into a tie for first in the National League West with the surprising San Diego Padres.

The finale was a wild one on Sunday afternoon. The DBacks grabbed the lead in the first after Paul Goldschmidt singled to center with two outs, and scored on an RBI double by A.J. Pollock. Pollock was thrown out at third on the play.

The Rockies then responded with four in the top of the second off of Patrick Corbin. Nolan Arenado got it started with a 435-foot solo home run into the left field bleachers. Dustin Garneau would get an RBI on a fielders choice with the bases loaded. Charlie Blackmon then hit a big two-out, two-run double to make it 4-1.

David Peralta drew the DBacks back to within one in the bottom of the third, hitting a two-run home run down the right field line into the Rockies bullpen. It was his seventh on the season.

Charlie Blackmon would follow in the top of the fifth with a solo home run of his own into the Rockies bullpen to make it 5-3.

Arizona responded in the bottom half. Jake Lamb singled up the middle, and scored on a Nick Ahmed triple off the wall in dead center. Pinch hitter Phil Gosselin grounded out to second, allowing Ahmed to tie the game at 5-5.

Trevor Story hit a long solo home run to left in the top of the sixth off of reliever Daniel Hudson to put the Rox back in front. But once again, Arizona responded immediately. Nick Ahmed singled home Jake Lamb to tie the game, and pinch hitter Chris Herrmann doubled to left center to score Ahmed to give Arizona their first lead on the day.

Paul Goldschmidt then hit a long two-run home run into the left field bleachers to make it 9-6. The shot measured 439 feet and was his seventh on the season.

The DBacks bullpen would hold up, with Brad Zeigler picking up his sixth save. Their much maligned bullpen went four innings on Sunday afternoon, allowing just one run and two hits.

Arizona will now hit the road for a nine game trip. It begins in Miami on Tuesday evening, then heads to Atlanta for three next week and concludes in Denver.

                              Game #28

                              MIAMI 2, ARIZONA 1

Ichiro scampers home with the winning run on a two-out third strike wild pitch.

                              5/3/16
Miami, FL (AP) – The Miami Marlins defeated the Arizona Diamondbacks 2-1 on Tuesday evening at Marlins Park in a very unique ending to a well played game. Ichiro Suzuki scored on a wild pitch, following Martin Prado swinging and missing for the third out in the ninth, sending the Marlins to the victory and ending the DBacks six game winning streak.

Shelby Miller and Jose Fernandez were both excellent in this one. Each gave up a first inning run, then nothing else. Miller went seven innings, allowing just four hits, while striking out seven and walking one. Fernandez went 7 1/3, allowing just three hits, while striking out 10 and walking one.

Arizona grabbed the lead in the top of the first inning as Paul Goldschmidt grounded into a double play, allowing A.J. Pollock to score. The Marlins would get that run back in the bottom half as Giancarlo Stanton singled to left, scoring Marcell Ozuna. Ozuna had singled and reached second on a wild pitch.

The DBacks had a great chance to grab the lead in the top of the eighth, but a failed squeeze play did them in. With runners on first and third with one out, A.J. Pollock failed to lay down a bunt on a squeeze, allowing Chris Owings to get tagged out at the plate. Then Socrates Brito got caught making the turn too wide at second to end the inning.

In the bottom of the ninth, Giancarlo Stanton led off with a walk and Ichiro Suzuki came on to run for him. He reached second on a Randall Delgado wild pitch. He advanced to third on a passed ball, then scored as Martin Prado struck out swinging, but the ball got away from Welington Castillo, allowing Prado to reach first and Ichiro to score the game winner.

The loss ended the DBacks six game winning streak and dropped them a game back of San Diego in the National League West. The series resumes on Wednesday evening with Robbie Ray (1-0, 1.40) facing Adam Conley (2-0, 3.12).

Miami, FL (AP) – The Arizona Diamondbacks bounced back on Wednesday evening and defeated the Miami Marlins 9-2 at Marlins Park in Miami. The win moved the DBacks back into a first place tie atop the National League West.

The Diamondbacks struck early in this one, plating five runs in the top of the second inning. Jake Lamb singled through the right side to score Welington Castillo. Nick Ahmed hit a sacrifice fly to center, plating Socrates Brito to make it 2-0. Robbie Ray then kept the inning alive with a two-out base hit to center and Jean Segura made Adam Conley pay, hitting a long three-run home run to left to make it 5-0.

Miami would get a run back in the bottom of the third as Marcell Ozuna doubled to left center, scoring the speedy Dee Gordon.

Arizona would put the game out of reach in the sixth as Paul Goldschmidt blasted a long solo home run into the right centerfield seats, and Robbie Ray came through with a two-run single to make it 8-1.

Ray (2-0) really should have been the player of the game in this one. He pitched 6 1/3 innings, allowing just the two earned runs on eight hits. He struck out six and walked two on the mound. At the plate, he went 2 for 3 with two RBIs and a big two-out single that kept the second inning alive allowing Jean Segura to hit that big three-run home run.

The series concludes on Thursday evening with Archie Bradley (1-1, 3.38) going for the DBacks, against Jarred Cosart (1-2, 4.81) for the Marlins.

Notes: Jake Lamb left the game in the sixth inning after making a diving stop on a Martin Prado ground ball. He injured his right shoulder and was immediately placed on the 15-day disabled list after the game. He will miss up to a month of action. Lamb was third in the National League in batting, hitting .356.
