    Despite Rumblings, Deadline is Quiet

    Transactions:

        Aug. 2 Update: MLB Roundup

As the season really kicks into gear and the trade deadline has passed, there are some neat surprises in the standings. The Pirates, as absolutely nobody expected, lead the NL Central, but it is a relatively weak division that will likely to remain up for grabs as the season progresses. San Francisco have taken the West top spot from the Dodgers, but the latter remain only a half-game behind.

In the AL, there are fewer surprises. The A's remain atop the West and the Sox atop the Central. In the East, there's a battle brewing for top dog.

As with the AL generally, there are few surprises in the wild card case in both leagues.

In August, people will start to pay at least some attention to league statistical leaders. Barry Bonds is taking the league by storm, leading the league in his slash-line, ranking fifth in home runs and overall being a monster. Craig Wilson surprised many by leading the ML in home runs, but it remains to be seen whether the Bucs will continue to see this level of production from the first baseman-turned-right fielder.

          Pirates Update

As has been the case for quite some time, the Bucs' offense appears to be led by few players. Jason Bay has been slightly above average, but the addition of Ray Durham and the coming-to-life of Craig Wilson has provided the Bucs the opportunity to be phenomenal this season.

In the rotation, few things have changed, but fans should be wary of a regression. All pitchers' BABIP are below league average, and their XERAs reflect that.

The bullpen, however, has been growing stronger. Despite some poor showings by Kaz Tadano and Salomon Torres, the pen has shown its ability more in recent weeks than throughout the rest of the season.

Note: Next MiLB update will come Sept. 1.
