    2019 FIRST-YEAR PLAYER DRAFT

New York, NY (AP) – The Baltimore Orioles selected Bret Diaz, a 19-year-old pitcher from Iowa first overall in the 2019 First-Year Player Draft.

The DBacks went a pitcher with their first pick, 16th overall, selecting Denny Stokes, a 20-year-old right-hander out of Illinois. At 6’4”, 212 lbs, he projects as an above average to elite prospect.

Arizona went with Dominican Bruno Arias, a 6-foot, 185-lb third baseman in round two. The 19-year-old looks to be a nice prospect.

The DBacks had two second round compensatory picks, and added reliever Roger Powell, and starting pitcher Vince Baron. Baron has a live arm and nice potential.

Arizona rounded out the draft with pitcher Clyder Decker, center fielder Adolfo Ozuna, pitcher Jack Weldon, and pitcher Herb McMahon.

      JUNE 7-9: ARIZONA (33-33) @ TORONTO (21-44)

      June 7: DBacks 2, Blue Jays 1
      June 8: DBacks 7, Blue Jays 1
      June 9: Blue Jays 7, DBacks 3

Arizona took two of three from the last place Blue Jays in Toronto over the weekend to open a ten game road trip. The surprise was Zack Greinke losing in the finale.

The DBacks grabbed the opener of their ten-game road trip as they slipped past the Blue Jays 2-1 t Rogers Centre in Toronto. Taijuan Walker (5-2) picked up the win with a strong effort. He went 6 2/3, allowing the one run on seven hits. He struck out five and walked just one.

Archie Bradley worked a perfect ninth to earn his second save on the season.

Arizona would take the lead on a Jake Lamb solo home run in the second inning. It was his 17th on the season. Alex Avila then hit an RBI double in the seventh with the go ahead run.

Toronto’s lone run came on a Randal Grichuk solo shot in the fourth.

Former DBack Clay Buchholz took the loss for Toronto. He went 6 1/3 innings, allowing the two runs on six hits.

Zack Godley was masterful in Saturday afternoon’s 7-1 victory. He struck out 13 in seven innings of work, only allowing a lead off home run in the eighth to Lourdes Gurriel Jr. He allowed just two hits in picking up his fifth victory on the season.

Arizona used a five run seventh to blow open a close game. Wilmer Flores had the big blow with a two-run single with the bases loaded.

Jared Dyson made his return to the lineup after missing almost 60 games with a broken arm. He went 0 for 3 with a walk, but stole three bases. Blake Swihart went 3 for 5 with two doubles and two RBIs.

In the finale, the Jays put up four runs on Zack Greinke in the fifth inning, then made it stick as they salvaged the final game 7-3. Billy McKinney hit a huge three-run shot off of Silvo Brancho in the bottom of the eighth inning to add some insurance.

Sam Gaviglio (2-6) won just his second game on the year, pitching six innings and allowing three runs on eight hits. The Jays bullpen allowed just one hit over the final three innings to preserve the victory, snapping a six game losing streak.

Jake Lamb homered for Arizona, his 18th on the season.

Zack Greinke (6-4) lasted just five innings, throwing 99 pitches. He allowed four runs, but none of them were earned thanks to a huge Christian Walker error.

Arizona (33-33) now heads to Philadelphia for a matchup with the first-place Phillies (39-26).

        JUNE 10-12: ARIZONA (34-35) @ PHILADELPHIA (41-27)

        June 10: Phillies 8, DBacks 7 (10)
        June 11: Phillies 9, DBacks 5
        June 12: DBacks 12, Phillies 5

The summer of offense continued in Philadelphia as the DBacks dropped two of three to the National League East leading Phillies, as the teams combined to score 46 runs in their three game series.

Maikel Franco became just the nineteenth player in Major League Baseball history (13th in the National League) to hit four home runs in one game as he ended Monday evening’s game with a walk-off solo home run in the bottom of the tenth to propel the Phillies to an 8-7 victory.

The Phillies hit six home runs in the game, including two off of DBacks’ closer Greg Holland. Jean Segura opened the bottom of the ninth with a solo shot to center and Franco hit his fourth of the game and 16th on the season with two outs in the tenth to win it.

Franco’s amazing game overshadowed a great game from David Peralta as he went 3 for 5 with a double, triple and grand slam, driving in four runs in the loss.

When asked after the game why Torey Lovullo didn’t just walk him, he replied, “We felt like we could get him out. Greg had him 0-2, and he tried to elevate a fastball and he didn’t get it high enough.”

The Phillies broke out the bats in game two, defeating the DBacks 9-5 at Citizens Bank Park. Former DBack Jean Segura went 4 for 5 with a home run and two doubles to lead the attack for the first-place Phillies.

Robbie Ray (6-3) was knocked around in this one, allowing five runs (four earned) on nine hits in just 3 1/3 innings as his ERA ballooned to 5.88 on the season. He struck out three, but also issues three walks. Matt Koch and Merrell Kelly weren’t much better out of the bullpen, combining for four runs on seven hits in 4 2/3 innings.

Jake Arrieta (8-4) picked up the win, working six innings and allowing four runs on eight hits. He also went 2 for 3 at the plate with a couple of singles.

Notes: bad injury news in this one as David Peralta left the game in the fifth inning after diving for a ball in left. X-Rays showed a fractured wrist that will likely keep him out up to eight weeks. Arizona recalled Tim Locastro from Triple-A Reno to take his roster spot.

In the finale, Christian Walker homered twice and drove in three runs as the DBacks avoided the sweep with a 12-5 victory. Jake Lamb went 3 for 5 with two doubles and a home run.

Taijuan Walker (6-2) earned the victory, pitching five innings and allowing two runs on just five hits. He struck out four and walked one.

Bryce Harper went deep twice, and drove in three runs to help pace the Phillies offense. The Fightin’ Phils hit 11 home runs in the three game series.

Arizona (34-35) will now head to our Nation’s Capital to take on the Washington Nationals for a four game weekend series to conclude this ten game road trip.

          JUNE 13-16: ARIZONA (37-36) @ WASHINGTON (33-38)

          June 13: Nationals 4, DBacks 2
          June 14: DBacks 8, Nationals 4
          June 15: DBacks 5, Nationals 4 (11)
          June 16: DBacks 4, Nationals 3

After dropping the opener of a four game weekend series in our nation’s capital, the Arizona Diamondbacks rallied to win the final three game to move above .500 as they ended their ten game road trip with a (6-4) record.

The Nats grabbed the opener 4-3 over the DBacks at Nationals Park. Former DBack Patrick Corbin (2-10) won for just the second time in 2019, pitching a gem. He went seven innings, allowing two runs on just five hits.

Kurt Suzuki hit the go ahead home run in the bottom of the seventh inning off of Merrill Kelly as the Nats won their fourth straight game.

Carson Kelly homered as he got the start at catcher. It was his fourth on the season.

The DBacks got the offense rolling in game two, defeating the Nationals 8-4. Wilmer Flores delivered the big blow, a three-run home run in the top of the seventh.

Victor Robles, who came into the game hitting just .190, had a big day for the Nationals, going 2 for 4 with a double, home run and four RBIs.

Zack Greinke (7-4) picked up the win for the DBacks. He lasted 6 2/3 innings, allowing four run son six hits. He struck out six and did not issue a walk. Matt Koch and Archie Bradley worked two scoreless innings to close it out.

The DBacks rallied from a four run deficit to take the third game of the series 5-4 in 11 innings. Jarrod Dyson lined an RBI single to score Ketel Marte with the game winner as the DBacks got back to the .500 mark at (36-36).

Washington built a 4-0 lead scoring three in the fifth and one in the sixth off of Dallas Keuchel. But the DBacks bullpen came through in this one, tossing 5 1/3 scoreless innings, allowing no hits and striking out seven.

Ketel Marte lined an RBI single in the seventh to get the DBacks on the board. He then added a two-out, two-run double in the top of the eighth to tie the game at 4-4.

Matt Andriese (2-2) picked up the win with Greg Holland earning his fourth save.

The finale on Sunday afternoon saw the DBacks once again rally from an early deficit as they overcame a 3-0 hole in the third inning to win it 4-3. Robbie Ray (7-3) picked up the win, going six innings and allowing the three runs on five hits. He struck out seven and did not issue a walk.

Robbie Ray got the DBacks offense going with an RBI single to left center in the top of the fifth inning. Ketel Marte then drove in a second run with an RBI ground out. They would tie it in the sixth on a Blake Swihart RBI double to right.

Ketel Marte then came through with a sacrifice fly in the top of the seventh to score Nick Ahmed to put Arizona in front.

The much maligned bullpen, which leads the Major Leagues in blown saves (15), once again pitched well on Sunday, holding the Nats scoreless over the final three innings, allowing just one hit. Derek Holland picked up the save for the second consecutive day.

Wilmer Flores saw his 15-game hitting streak come to an end in this one. He went 0 for 3 with a walk.

The DBacks will now return to Chase Field as they open up a nine game home stand against the National League West with three against Colorado, followed by three against San Francisco and Los Angeles.

            JUNE 18-20: COLORADO (35-41) @ ARIZONA (37-39)

            June 18: Rockies 7, DBacks 2
            June 19: Rockies 5, DBacks 0
            June 20: Rockies 9, DBacks 6

The Colorado Rockies fans must be wondering where this has been all year. On Thursday afternoon, the Rockies completed a three game sweep of the Arizona Diamondbacks at Chase Field to run their winning streak to six games as they slowly creep towards Arizona in the National League West.

The Rockies stayed red-hot in the opener, hitting five home runs in a 7-2 victory to extend their winning streak to four games. Nolan Arenado went 4 for 4 with two home runs to pace the last-place Rockies.

Taijuan Walker’s struggles continued on Tuesday evening. He allowed three home runs and now leads all of baseball in allowing 22 home runs this season. Walker (6-3) lasted just five plus innings, allowing five runs on eight hits.

On the other side, Tyler Anderson, using an arsenal of puss balls, kept the DBacks offense off balance all night. He pitched seven innings, allowing just two hits, both triples, and two sacrifice flies. He struck out two and did not issue a walk.

Ian Desmond, Garrett Hampson and Chris Iannetta also homered for the Rockies in the win.

Chad Bettis tossed a six-hit shutout on Saturday evening as the Rockies won their fifth straight game, defeating the DBacks 5-0. Former DBack Mark Reynolds provided the offensive support, hitting two, two-run home runs for the suddenly red-hot Rockies.

Arizona (37-38) has managed just nine hits in losing the first two games of this series. They came in leading the National League in most offensive categories, but have been stymied by this Rockies staff.

Zack Godley (5-3) wasn’t terrible, going five innings and allowing three runs on five hits, but he received no offensive support.

In the finale, the Diamondbacks jumped out to a 3-0 lead after one inning, but even with Zack Greinke on the bump, could not hold on as they fell 9-6. Former DBacks Chris Iannetta hit a big two-run home insurance home run in the top of the ninth off of Archie Bradley to seal the sweep.

The Rockies got a two-run single from another former DBack Mark Reynolds in the top of the second to slice the lead to 3-2. Then Jake Lamb made a throwing error to open the top of the fourth and the floodgates opened as the Rockies scored four times to take a 6-4 lead, one that they would not relinquish.

David Dahl would homer off of Matt Andreise in the sixth and Iannetta blasted the big insurance homer in the ninth to seal it. Adam Jones hit a two-run home run off of Oh in the bottom of the eighth to cut the Rockies lead to 7-6, but they could not get over the hump, losing their third straight to their rivals.

Up next for Arizona (37-39) is another National League West rival as the San Francisco Giants (37-37) come to town for a three game weekend series.

              JUNE 21-23: SAN FRANCISCO (38-39) @ ARIZONA (39-40)

              June 21: DBacks 8, Giants 1
              June 22: Giants 6, DBacks 4
              June 23: DBacks 6, Giants 5

The Arizona Diamondbacks took two of three from the San Francisco Giants in a weekend series at Chase Field. Injuries continue to pile up though, for Arizona as they are now down three starters for a significant time as Nick Ahmed went down in game two and will miss 8-12 weeks.

The Diamondbacks took the opener over the San Francisco Giants 8-1 at Chase Field. The DBacks pounded out 15 hits in support of Dallas Keuchel.

Keuchel (3-1) worked 5 2/3 innings, allowing just the one run on four hits. The lone run allowed was a solo home run to former DBack Gerardo Parra in the top of the sixth inning.

Steven Souza went 3 for 5 with three doubles and two RBIs in the victory. Carson Kelly added a double and solo home run.

Yuan Lopez worked 1 1/3 innings of scoreless relief and also added an RBI single. It was his first Major League hit and RBI.

The Giants took game two on Saturday evening 6-4. Brandon Belt delivered the big blow with a three run home run off of Robbie Ray in the third inning.

Madison Bumgarner picked up the win, tossing six innings and scattering 10 hits, but only allowing three earned runs, thanks in part to three double plays turned by his defense.

Ketel Marte and Adam Jones homered for the DBacks in the loss.

Relief pitcher Adam Liberatore made his Diamondback debut after being signed as a free agent. He pitched two scoreless innings, striking out three.

Notes: Nick Ahmed left the game in the second inning after he tried to check his swing on a curveball. He injured his shoulder and had to be removed from the game. He is scheduled for an MRI on Sunday morning, but the early prognosis was not good and he may miss an extended period of time.

Alex Avila was the story in the finale, blasting three solo home runs and adding a double as the DBacks won the rubber match 6-5. They rallied three times to get back to within a game of .500 at (39-40).

Matt Koch (2-3) picked up the win out of the bullpen. He gave up one run on one hit, a solo home run from Yangervis Solarte, over two innings of work in relief of Taijuan Walker. Derek Holland earned his sixth save, working a perfect ninth.

Yangervis Solarte went deep twice in the game, but it wasn’t enough as the Giants dropped back below .500 at (38-39).

Arizona will now host the National League West leading Los Angeles Dodgers (54-25) for three games to close out the home stand. The Dodgers lead the West by 14 ½ games over San Diego.

                JUNE 24-26: LOS ANGELES (55-27) @ ARIZONA (41-41)

                June 24: DBacks 6, Dodgers 2
                June 25: DBacks 14, Dodgers 3
                June 26: Dodgers 10, DBacks 3

Arizona took two of three from the first place Dodgers at Chase Field. They got a couple of great pitching performances from Zack Godley and Zack Greinke in the first two games, but Los Angeles rallied in the finale, hitting four home runs to avoid the sweep.

In the opener, Jake Lamb hit a three-run bomb in the sixth inning to help pace the Diamondbacks to a 6-2 victory over the first-place Dodgers.

Zack Godley (6-3) was spectacular on the bump, allowing no runs on just two hits in six innings of work. He struck out two and issued one walk.

Clayton Kershaw (1-2) took the loss for the Dodgers. He lasted just five innings, allowing three earned runs on seven hits.

In game two, the DBacks broke out the whoopin’ stick as they pounded out 17 hits to defeat the Dodgers 14-3. They scored eight times in the second inning to chase Walker Bueller (9-5) after just one plus innings of work. Jarrod Dyson, Christian Walker and Adam Jones all drove in three runs in the victory.

Los Angeles, leading the second-place Diamondbacks by 13 games in the standings, have now lost three straight to Arizona, twice allowing more than 10 runs.

Zack Greinke (8-5) picked up the victory. He allowed just two runs on three hits, both solo home runs in the seventh inning.

The win moved Arizona into a tie with Washington for the second National League Wild Card spot as the season hit the halfway point.

In the finale, it was the Cody Bellinger show. The former Arizona State product hit a grand slam in the sixth inning, then followed that with a three-run blast in the eighth inning as Los Angeles pounded the DBacks 10-3.

Arizona had a no hitter going through five innings as Dallas Keuchel and Matt Koch were perfect. Keuchel left in the second inning with back stiffness, but Koch was magnificent.

Unfortunately, Merrill Kelly was knocked around in the sixth and newly acquired reliever Adam Liberatore surrendered five runs on six hits in 1 2/3 innings of work.

Kenta Maeda (9-1) picked up the win, working five innings and allowing one run on five hits. He struck out four.

Arizona (41-41) will now head to San Francisco for four games and then Los Angeles for two as they approach the All-Star break.

                  JUNE 27-30: ARIZONA (43-43) @ SAN FRANCISCO (41-43)

                  June 27: DBacks 3, Giants 2
                  June 28: Giants 4, DBacks 3 (11)
                  June 29: DBacks 5, Giants 4
                  June 30: Giants 6, DBacks 5 (11)

The DBacks and Giants split a four game series in the Bay splitting four one-run games. The Giants won both of theirs in extra innings, as both teams continue to fight to stay in the National League Wild Card race.

The DBacks took the opener 3-2 at Oracle Park over the San Francisco Giants. Robbie Ray (8-4) picked up the victory, tossing six innings, and allowing two runs on four hits. He struck out eight and walked just one.

Greg Holland worked the ninth to pick up his seventh save on the season.

Blake Swihart’s two-run double in the top of the third got Arizona going. After the Giants tied the game in the fifth inning on a Madison Bumgarner solo home run, Kevin Cron lined an RBI double to left, plating Blake Swihart with the game winning run.

Rookie Mike Yastremski hit a walk-off solo home run off of Merrell Kelly in the bottom of the 11th in the second game of the series to help the Giants to a 4-3 victory. Wilmer Flores had tied the game at 3-3 with a solo shot in the top of the ninth off of Giants closer Mark Melancon.

Yuan Lopez and Archie Bradley were excellent in relief of starter Taijuan Walker. They combined for 4 1/3 innings of scoreless relief, allowing just two hits. Walker went 5 2/3 innings, allowing three runs on eight hits. He struck out six in the no decision.

Zack Godley pitched well on Saturday evening, as the DBacks were able to hold on to edge the Giants 5-4. Godley (7-3) worked 5 2/3 innings, allowing four runs (one earned), while striking out five.

Alex Avila and Jake Lamb hit solo home runs in the first inning off of Johnny Cueto to help pace the offense. Zack Godley helped his cause in the second with an RBI single.

Rookie Mike Yastremski homered again for the Giants. It was his fourth on the season and second in as many nights. It was setup by a couple of DBacks errors that kept the Giants sixth inning alive.

Matt Koch and Greg Holland worked the final 3 1/3 innings of scoreless baseball, allowing just one hit. Holland picked up save number eight.

In the finale, a blown ninth inning save from Greg Holland set up the Giants to win it in the 11th as Evan Longoria lined a double to left, scoring Buster Posey with the game winner in a 6-5 Giants victory.

Posey led off the ninth with a double off of Greg Holland. He reached third on a wild pitch, and scored on a sacrifice fly by Yangervis Solarte, to tie the game at 5-5.

Jake Lamb had an inside the park home run for the DBacks, his 23rd on the season. Steven Souza also homered in the loss.

Zack Greinke worked six innings, allowing three run son four hits, but got the no decision.

Arizona (43-43) has tomorrow off, then heads to Los Angeles (55-31) for a quick two game series, before heading home for a three game series with Colorado to close out the first half of the season.

                      July 2: DBacks 3, Dodgers 1 (11)
                      July 3: Dodgers 5, DBacks 4

The Arizona Diamondbacks kept the status quo on a brief two game trip to Los Angeles, splitting the two game series to move to (44-44) on the season, twelve games back of the first place Dodgers.

The DBacks blew a ninth inning lead, but rallied to defeat the Dodgers 3-1 in 11 innings to open this quick two game series. Adam Jones’ RBI single in the 11th proved to be the game winner as Arizona extended the Dodgers losing streak to five games.

Dallas Keuchel pitched a gem, going seven innings and allowing just four hits, while striking out five and walking none. Jake Lamb went 3 for 5 with a double and run scored.

Former Dodger Adam Liberatore (1-1) blew the save in the ninth, but picked up the victory working a scoreless tenth. Greg Holland picked up his ninth save as he worked a one, two, three eleventh to close out the game.

In game two, the Dodgers jumped out to a 4-0 lead with Robbie Ray lasting just 4 1/3 innings. He allowed the four runs on six hits. He struck out seven and walked two.

Adam Jones hit a big three-run blast in the top of the sixth off of Rod Stripling to cut the Dodgers lead to 4-3. Kevin Cron then hit a solo home run in the top of the eighth off of Dylan Floro. It was Cron’s first MLB home run and it tied the game at 4-4.

But the DBacks could not hold that lead a former DBack A.J. Pollock hit an RBI double in the bottom half of the inning off of Archie Bradley (0-3) to put Los Angeles in front 5-4.

Kenley Jansen would finish the DBacks off, working a perfect ninth to earn his 19th save.

Arizona (44-44) now heads home to take on the red-hot Rockies (43-45) in the final series before the All-Star break.

                        Big Trades

Houston, TX (AP) – The Houston Astros made a big move this week to set them up for the stretch run. The Astros (59-29) with the best record in baseball made a blockbuster deal with the Pittsburgh Pirates. The Astros sent starting pitchers Lance McCullers Jr (88 OVR) and Brad Peacock (85 OVR) to Pittsburgh in exchange for relievers Kyle Crick (84 OVR), and Tyler Lyons (76 OVR), center fielder Starling Marte (83 OVR), first baseman Josh Bell (73 OVR) and starting pitcher Chad Krul (76 OVR).

It looks like an odd move on the outside as the Astros are giving away two starters, but they did add some very good players in return. The Pirates pick up two top starters and despite a (36-51) record, only sit ten games out in the NL Central.

Ironically, the day that this trade went down, the Astros lost Justin Verlander for the season with a torn ACL. They then went out and acquired Clay Buchholz from the Blue Jays in exchange for third baseman Nick Tanielu.

Their neighbors to the north could not sit still as the Astros wheeled and dealed. The Texas Rangers sent 25-year-old first baseman Joey Gallo (82 OVR, A POT) to Boston in exchange for a couple of nice prospects in third baseman Rafael Devers (69 OVR, A POT), and starting pitcher Mike Shawaryn (69 OVR, B POT). The Rangers (42-47) felt that the deal was too sweet to pass up with prospect Ronald Guzman (72 OVR, B POT) ready to play full time.

Rumors are starting to heat up as the calendar has turned to July and the All-Star break is next week in Cleveland.

                          JULY 5-7: COLORADO (44-47) @ ARIZONA (46-45)

                          July 5: Rockies 6, DBacks 1
                          July 6: DBacks 9, Rockies 6
                          July 7: DBacks 3, Rockies 0

The DBacks took two of three from the red-hot Rockies as the first half of the season came to a close.

Tyler Anderson was the story in the series opener as he tossed a two-hitter as the Rockies won 6-1. Ian Desmond blasted a three-run home run in the second inning to help pace the offense as the Rockies drew even with the DBacks in the National League West.

Ketel Marte led off the game for Arizona with a solo home run to left off of Tyler Anderson. He would not give up another hit until the seventh inning on a Blake Swihart single to right.

Anderson (6-8) struck out three and did not issue a walk.

Taijuan Walker (6-4) picked up the loss, allowing five runs on six hits over six innings of work. He struck out five and walked two.

Nolan Arenado went 3 for 4 with an RBI double. Charlie Blackmon homered in the third inning. Mark Reynolds went 0 for 2, but walked twice and scored twice.

The DBacks rallied late to defeat the Rockies 9-6 on Saturday evening. Arizona scored five times in the bottom of the eighth to rally and end a two-game losing streak, returning to the .500 mark once again.

Colorado (44-46) grabbed a 3-0 lead in the second thanks to a two-run Nolan Arenado home run in the first and a Mark Reynolds solo home run in the second, both off of Zack Godley.

The DBacks responded in the third, sending eight men to the plate and scoring four times. Jake Lamb had the big blow with a bases clearing three-run triple.

The Rockies would tie it in the fifth on a Nolan Arenado RBI single and they retook the lead in the sixth on a Chris Iannetta RBI double.

That setup Arizona for the big eighth inning rally after leaving the bases loaded in the seventh. RBI singles from Christian Walker and Ildemaro Vargas gave Arizona the lead 6-5. Adam Jones then lined a two-run single to right to plate Walker and Tim Locastro. Carson Kelly would reach on an error, allowing Ketel Marte to score to make it 9-5.

Merrell Kelly (3-5) picked up the win out of the bullpen. He worked a scoreless eighth inning in relief.

In the finale, it was the Zack Greinke show, as he tossed a complete game, two-hit shut-out as the DBacks slipped past the Rockies 3-0.

Greinke (9-5) was masterful. He allowed just two hits, while striking out nine and walking no one.

Adam Jones hit a solo home run in the fourth, his tenth on the year, to give Arizona a 1-0 lead. Wilmer Flores then added some insurance with a two-run shot to left in the eighth to give Greinke some cushion.

Arizona (46-45) now has off until Friday when they travel to St. Louis to face former DBack legend Paul Goldschmidt.

The All-Star game is Tuesday evening in Cleveland.
