SEPT 23-25: ST LOUIS (72-87) @ ARIZONA (87-72)
Sept 23: DBacks 13, Cardinals 10
Sept 24: DBacks 6, Cardinals 2
Sept 25: DBacks 8, Cardinals 5
The Diamondbacks engineered a much needed sweep of the St Louis Cardinals as they moved in front of the Mets in the race for the final National League Wild Card spot with just three games left.
The opener was a wild one as the DBacks built a huge early lead then held on for a 13-10 victory over the feisty Cardinals. Picking a player of the game was tough though as Alex Avila hit three home runs and drove in five runs, while Eduardo Escobar hit for the cycle, driving in two runs in the victory.
Arizona scored runs in the first five innings, then added four in the bottom of the eight to build a 13-6 lead. Archie Bradley was then called on to finish the game off. He has struggled as of late and tonight was no different as he gave up four runs, three on a Matt Carpenter home run, while recording just two outs.
Adam Liberatore was called on to get the final out to pick up his third save on the season. Rookie Jon Duplantier was also roughed up in one inning of work, giving up two runs on three hits to see his ERA climb to 9.90.
Arizona hit six home runs in the win, while the Cardinals hit three.
The win, coupled with a Mets loss, moved Arizona back to within a half game of the Mets.
The DBacks used the long ball again to defeat the Cardinals on Tuesday evening, hitting three home runs in a 6-2 victory. Robbie Ray tossed seven shutout innings to pick up his 15th win on the season.
Ketel Marte got the DBacks going with a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the first follow a Tim Locastro lead off triple. Eduardo Escobar followed that up with a moon shot to right to make it 2-0.
In the third, Ketel Marte hit a two-run home run off of the right field foul pole. It was his 24th on the year. Two batters later, Jake Lamb crushed a Carlos Martinez hanging slider into the pool. That two-run shot was his 43rd on the season and put Arizona in front 6-0.
Robbie Ray (15-7) would cruise in this one, allowing just three hits in his seven innings of work.
The win, coupled with another Mets loss, moved the DBacks a half game ahead of the Mets with just four games left in the regular season.
The finale was another slugfest as the teams combined for six home runs but the DBacks prevailed 8-5. Archie Bradley closed it out despite loading the bases in the ninth to earn his 18th save on the season.
Zack Godley (12-3) picked up the win, working five innings and allowing three runs on seven hits. He walked two and struck out two.
Arizona erased an early two run deficit with a five run second inning with red hot Adam Jones and Domingo Santana each hitting two run home runs. Jones would add a second home run, a solo shot in the fifth. It was his 28th on the season and ninth in September as he seems to be willing the DBacks to the postseason.
Jones is now hitting .311 on the season with 28 home runs and 92 RBIs.
Arizona (87-72) will now have Thursday off before hosting San Diego in a three game set to close out the regular season.

Adam Jones is carrying this DBacks team to the post-season.
