Re: Coaching Career of Bob Knight (No, not THAT Bob Knight) - take #2 - ps2

Columbus, OH - Last night was the annual midnight madness introduction of the team at Value City Arena but there was a twist. There is a new coach on the scene, coach Bob Knight. Coach Knight told the players that he has never had a losing season and he's not going to start having one this season.

      Starters
      pg - N.Osimani, JR (81)
      sg - W.Ozier, SR (81)
      sf - B.Reese, SO (83)
      pf - C.Sylla, JR (77)
      c - O.Feeney, JR (76)

      Bench
      sf - F.Wooden, JR (79)
      pg - B.Henderson, SR (74)
      pf - T.Peterson, SO (71)
      pg - T.Neike, JR (71)
      c - D.Bouma, SR (70)
      c - J.Thomson, JR (67)
      sg - A.Almanson, JR (60)

The bench looks thin in quality (ovr) but we'll soon see how good he and his assistants are at teaching the kids the right way to play the game of basketball at "Knight School".

      Team Ratings
      offense: 87
      defense: 87
      shooting: 85
      rebounding: 91
      overall: 87
If you can read this, thank a teacher. If you can read this in english, thank a soldier.

        Don,

        A couple of questions :
        1. What was Boston College's rating going into this season?
        2. Is it possible to edit your roster posting, designating who the walk-ons are? I would like to figure out how many scholarships you will have available for both this season and the next.
        3. Are you planning on red-shirting any players?
At first, when you said you had 0 scholarships, I thought you meant for this, your first season. It turns out you should have 2-3 scholarships, giving you an opportunity to bring in some fresh faces for year 2. (does coach Knight recruit JC players??)

Having no scholarships for the first season would've been really tough for you to succeed at the Ohio State University. Penn State in my dynasty was like that, 0 scholarships in first year and something like 8 scholarships in the second year. It looks like you will be doing a lot of recruiting in year 2 as well.

Also, a point of clarity is in order. It's not 'Ohio State University' or 'OSU', but rather 'the Ohio State University' or 'theOSU'. The word 'the' must be written in bold type. Coach Knight needs to show that he can fit into the midwest, or he needs to just head back east and get the job at Boston College again.

Comparing the two coaches - goals :

          year 7 :

          Coach Knight -> 86
          Coach Lewis (MD) -> 85

Goals that Coach Knight has earned exclusively -
          • Player of the year (Naismith Award)
          • 2k Sports Award winner
          • Player chosen in the NBA draft (coach Lewis inherited 3 seniors with Maryland projected to go in 1st round of draft next year though)
          • Participant of 2k Sports Camp (goal doesn't exist in xbox360 version)
Goals that Coach Lewis has earned exclusively -
          • Recruit HS All-American
          • Recruit Mr. Basketball of home state
          • Recruit top recruit in nation
          • Win non-conference tourney (season 7)
          • Upset #1 team in nation (#1 Minnesota @ Valparaiso)
Right now, coach Lewis has 3 goals in the bank for next year and has a good shot for a fourth if one of the seniors is drafted in the NBA.

Coach Knight has a shot at another goal if they knock off #1 UCLA early in the season. Also, is the Ohio State University in a non-conference tourney this season? Is Coach Knight going after the Mr. Basketball of Ohio?

It looks like the Ohio State University drew a tough draw in this year's ACC-Big 10 challenge. The Buckeyes will have to go on the road against the ACC's top ranked Virginia Cavaliers. Ouch!

Despite coaching Maryland, I still can't bring myself to cheer for the ACC in the ACC-Big 10 challenge, though.

              1. I'll have to check and let you know what BC was rated on Monday.

              2. The notation for walk ons has been edited.

              3. The incoming freshman was red shirted.

I turned down the BC job because I saw the opening in the Big Ten conference, the RL conference that Coach Knight went to after coaching for 6 years at Army. He was, of course, the long time head coach of the Indiana Hoosiers.

The contract calls for 2 years.

There are a couple of differences between Coach Matta and Coach Knight. Coach Matta's offense was the motion offense playbook (flex offense for Knight). Coach Matta's offensive tempo was a little more up tempo (70) than mine (60). His defense was more loose (30) than mine (50).

Boise State, I think, returned all 5 starters and has an overall rating of 88. They are also ranked #10 in the preseason rankings, which will be posted shortly.
I think it is really cool that coach Knight is coaching at the Ohio State University. In fact, if memory serves, there were some rumors that the RL coach Knight might have taken over in Columbus after being let go by Indiana. Didn't come to fruition as the Buckeyes brought in Thad Motta instead.

It's much more challenging (and frustrating) to coach at the power conference level. My team is terribly inconsistent. When playing their best, they could win a National Title. On the other hand, they needed a last second shot to defeat Albany (rpi 214) at home earlier in the year. I was honestly afraid to play the game at Duke with this team.

The record is probably where it should be. There were a couple of bad losses that I should have pulled out if not for stupid coaching lapses on my part (home against Marquette, 9-11 rpi 73 and at North Carolina 6-10 rpi 181). On the other hand, the Terrapins pulled out a couple of games they probably shouldn't have (neutral court #13 Seton Hall, 16-3 and @ #12 Duke, 17-4) So there are some positives and negatives on the resume when it comes to NCAA bubble time.

The competition is so much tougher and the teams are much more balanced, talent wise. As a coach, it really becomes necessary to make in-game adjustments to your game plan to compete at this level. I believe that I lost the Marquette and North Carolina games mainly due to a stubbornness to alter my initial game plan, even when it wasn't working.

The main thing is to win enough games so that the contract is extended after two years. Survive and advance, as they say. Good luck with the Ohio State University Buckeyes!!

                  Cool, thanks.

It looks like the Ohio State University will have 3 scholarships in the first year and a maximum of 6 scholarships in the second year. That's not bad at all.

If the people in Columbus aren't happy, coach Knight can always go back out west. I'll bet Idaho State will be looking for a new coach soon ......

Now you see why I didn't take the MD job. I didn't want the comparisons.

The team doesn't have a non-conference tourny scheduled, otherwise it would have been noted when I posted the schedule.

I will only go after the Mr. Basketball of Ohio if he meets my criteria for my assistants to use when initially contacting prospective recruits(#1 skills, #2 intellegence).

The comparisons are going to come, now that you are in the big-time. Sorry .

Another good thing about choosing the OSU is that it's more likely that the Mr. Basketball in Ohio will meet your recruiting criteria. At least more likely than in states like MD, MA, or ID.
