You're going to have to step up your game against those 3 ranked opponents, other then that I think this season will be another cake walk for Coach Matthews

Re: Coaching Career of Chris Matthews (CH2k8)

I could easily have a losing record going into conference play this season. Memphis and Syracuse both had down years last season so they aren't ranked in the preseason. Memphis is probably a top-10 overall team, and Syracuse is top 20. Put that with the fact that I play both of them along with the 3 ranked teams on the road, and there is absolutely no way I don't lose at least a few of those games.

If I win two of the five games against the really good opponents I'll be ecstatic. As long as no one gets injured I think I can go undefeated in conference play. The only game that is a threat is playing at Jacksonville.

I'll just go ahead and predict that we go 23-5 in the regular season. Then win the conference tournament which will put us at 26-5. Then hopefully get a 10 or 11 seed, and then win the first game and pull off a huge win in the second round before losing in the sweet 16.

I'm really excited about this team. This is going to be second hand behind a big NCAA 11 project I'm working on, but I'll definitely be getting the first game in soon.

I really enjoyed reading through this entire thread, haha. I'll be following future updates.

Coach Matthews' random thoughts on each game are probably the best part. I wish coaches actually spoke like that to the press constantly. It'd make interviews more interesting.

Coach Matthews is slowly turning his North Florida Ospreys into a legitimate contender similar to Gonzaga. They proved this once again by upsetting the 19th ranked Longhorns in their backyard to open the season.

The hero of the game for the Ospreys was unexpected, however. Emanuel Dancy scored 16 in the first half for North Florida, which was only 2 shy of his career high. He would wind up with 20 total in the game, beating his previous best. Cliff Slattery was also very impressive, despite being the 6th man this year instead of starting. He went 5 for 5 from the floor and scored 13 points.

            Coach Matthews’ Minute

Despite being a very sloppy game for both teams, North Florida got the job done and got the win at the end of the night. Unlike in year's past, where the team had two or three players that did all the work, tonight it was a complete team effort. The perfect example of this is Brent Wood being TOO unselfish. He led the nation in scoring last year, but only took 5 shots in tonight's game.

The game was very close in the first half, with neither team being able to go on a big run. It stayed that way for the majority of the second half as well, until Wood knocked down three's on consecutive attempts to stretch the lead to 9 for the Ospreys. UCF was never able to come back after that, and North Florida went on to win.

North Florida faces a big challenge in two days, against one of the best, yet underrated teams in the Memphis Tigers on the road. Coach Matthews and the Ospreys will certainly be looking for some payback for last year's loss in Memphis, and given his track record that has a very good chance of happening.

              Coach Matthews’ Minute
“Another one bites the dust. Didn't expect a challenge, didn't get one.”

Coach Matthews has been notorious for two things, winning when he shouldn't, and getting payback against the teams that do beat him. He did that once again tonight, as his North Florida Ospreys team dominated a great, young Memphis Tigers team the whole night.

The Ospreys were led once again by blossoming sophomore SF Emanuel Dancy. Dancy won the A-Sun Freshman of the Year award last season, but was hidden behind the great play of Rivera, Wood, and Riley. With Monceaux coming in this year, Dancy was supposed to be an afterthought, a role player. That hasn't happened though, with Dancy averaging 23 points through 3 games (averaged 9.3 last season). He scored a career high 31 points tonight against Memphis.

Brent Wood found more of a rhythm tonight, scoring 12 points. He hasn't been taking shots, which has helped Dancy become the player he has been, but Coach Matthews wants his best shooter to shoot the ball.

Memphis' "fab 5" couldn't get the job done tonight, but they are still very young. They start 5 sophomores, and the rest of their roster is composed of 1 senior, 1 junior, 2 sophomores, and 3 freshmen. (Their "fab 5" has the following ovr ratings....85, 84, 84, 80, 75. Imagine how good they will be next season, and how incredibly good they will be if they all stay for their senior year!)

                Coach Matthews’ Minute
“I told my team going into this game was liking walking into a duel, except that they only have water guns and we have desert eagles. I told them that if they lose that battle they better go get their junk cut off because you aren't a man.”

This is what having two seven footers should do for you. Both Monceaux and Riley dominated this game on both ends of the floor. Freshman Jean Francois Monceaux scored 17 points, and grabbed 21 rebounds, 10 of which were offensive. Both of those were career highs, and the 21 rebounds tops Emerson Riley's previous Ospreys record of 19 rebounds in a single game.

Brent Wood continues to struggle, despite scoring 15 points. He started the game 0 for 10, before hitting 3 straight shots. The then went on to miss 5 more in a row to end the game. There has been rumors that Coach Matthews is fed up with his lack of production, and that Wood could be benched if he doesn't pick it up despite leading the nation in scoring last year.

                    Coach Matthews’ Minute

North Florida Moves Up to #2 In Latest Mid-Major Poll
                      November 22, 2010

Jacksonville, FL - As North Florida continues to win games, they continue to move up the Mid-Major poll as well. After staying at #3 for two weeks, they jumped New Mexico State this week to move up to #2. This is the highest the Ospreys have ever been, and it looks like they could be eying their first ever trip to the top 25 polls.

North Florida only trails Gonzaga, who is currently ranked 17th in the media poll and 25th in the coaches poll. The Zags lost an overtime thriller at Penn St. this past Saturday, but that wasn't enough to move UNF ahead of them.

The Ospreys bitter rivals are the only other A-Sun team to make the poll. The Dolphins currently sit at 19th, but are very likely to move up as they play an extremely weak schedule this year. Georgia is the only non-small conference team that they play all year, but everyone is looking forward to their showdown with the Ospreys on January 22nd.

Tonight was the first real test for the Ospreys this season. They had foul trouble early and often, but still managed to fight through it and come out victorious. Rivera, Dancy, and Monceaux all got very limited time in the first half due to the fouls, but North Florida still managed to take a 10 point lead into halftime.

The 2nd half is when things started to fall apart. Kentucky came back and even held the lead with 5 minutes remaining. The Ospreys would hold a 2 point lead for the next 4 minutes, and with one minute to go the score was 82-80 in favor of UNF. Then the man who has been non-existent came up big. Brent Wood nailed a 3-pointer to seal the deal like he has done so many times before.

With that said, Mike Harrington is starting to look more and more like a clone of Wood in his freshman season. Wood was on the bench to start his first year, but gradually started to get more and more minutes once Coach Matthews realized his scoring capabilities. Harrington is doing the very same, and could wind up taking Wood's starting job if he can't start contributing more. Wood is currently averaging 14.4 PPG, which is lower than his total for his freshman year despite not even starting for the first several games that year.

                        Coach Matthews’ Minute
“All that matters is that we won. We will continue to win, and win, and win, until they won't let us win any more.”

In a game that can only be described as ugly, the Ospreys fought back and won the game. Bulldogs small forward Corey Hendry had a career day, and five minutes into the game had single-handedly outscored the Ospreys 9-6.

North Florida battled back and finished the first half very strong, and wound up finished the half ahead 39-25. That didn't last long however, as the Ospreys only scored 6 points in the first 10 minutes of the second half, as UNC Asheville went on a 23-6 run to take the lead.

Once again, however, the Ospreys finished really strongly. Both Wood and Dancy, who struggled shooting the ball, hit some clutch shots down the stretch to help North Florida pull away and secure the win.

I don't plan on staying at North Florida forever, but I am going to be very selective of the team I move on to. I have a solid foundation build here and plan on staying unless I get an offer from UCF, USF, or a power conference school. I would also consider going to somewhere in Texas like TCU.

Problem is I have a solid team built, and I have two top 100 prospects I could be adding to it next season. It's going to be tough to leave when I do.
