This kind of game has been pretty common for the A-Sun games involving the North Florida Ospreys the past couple years. It's almost pointless even playing, because it seems even the opposing teams know the outcome before the opening tip happens. Even the refs seemed bored, as they seemed to be playing a game to see who could blow the most whistles in the game.

The Ospreys must have taken offense to not being included in the top 25, because they didn't let up until they were up 25 with five minutes remaining. Coach Matthews finally showed some sympathy and put his players that get the least playing time on the floor.

Of all the games I've played in College Hoops, coach mode or playing, I've never seen this happen until this past game. My back-up center Austin Kowalczuk got his ankles broken pretty bad haha.

Excuse the crappy video, I just shot it with my phone because I was amazed this actually happened.

You have to give Florida Gulf Coast credit. They played the Ospreys better than any of the other conference foes have. That isn't saying much though, because losing by 21 points isn't anything to brag about.

After a very slow first half, the second half of this game was just back and forth offense. Other than the occasional steal, the defense was non existent. North Florida showed what their offense is capable of, scoring a monstrous 63 points in the second frame.

Defending conference player of the year Brent Wood continues to struggle, and mumblings of potentially starting freshman Mike Harrington over him are starting to get louder. Wood is averaging just 15.7 points per game this season after leading the NCAA with 28.3 ppg last season.

Ospreys Continue Conference Tear

These two teams played two times last season, and they were two of the best games played in the A-Sun. The first one went into overtime, and the 2nd one had the 7th seeded Owls so close to upsetting the Ospreys to win the conference tournament before Brent Wood turned super human and erased an 11 point lead with 4 minutes remaining.

Unfortunately, this game wasn't close except for when the Owls held a 21-18 lead early on. After that moment North Florida kicked it up a gear or two and the rest is history.

Cliff Slattery of the Ospreys sprained his ankle during the game, and will probably see limited time for the next week or so. This could be trouble when they play a good USF Bulls team next week.

Ospreys Finally Get Respect
February 17, 2011

Jacksonville, FL - For the very first time in school history, the North Florida Ospreys are ranked in the media top 25 poll. The new poll came out this morning, with the Ospreys listed as #23.

Some people are questioning a small school like UNF being ranked, but their resume is one of the best in college basketball this season. They are 3-0 against teams in the top 25, and 6-1 against top 100 RPI teams.

Coach Matthews opinion on making the poll, "It's about ******* time."

The Ospreys face their first, and probably only big test until March, tonight as they play a solid South Florida Bulls squad in what has become a bit of an instate rivalry. You know Coach Matthews will have them riled up, so hopefully they can keep this momentum going into March.

The Bulls and Ospreys round 3 goes in favor of North Florida. After failing to be competitive when the teams played the past two seasons, UNF absolutely destroyed the team from Tampa tonight.

Things actually looked bleak for North Florida early. Falling behind 7-0 to start the game, with Monceaux getting 3 fouls within the first 8 minutes of the game. That didn't stop Emerson Riley and Austen Kowalczuk from dominating the game down low. Each of them was only a couple of rebounds away from a double double in just the first half. Kowalczuk finished the game with 20 points and 11 rebounds off the bench and didn't miss a single shot (6-6 FG, 8-8 FT). His previous career highs were 12 and 5.

The Ospreys certainly proved their worth in the first game being ranked. As long as they get by in-state rivals Jacksonville and Florida Gulf Coast without an upset, they should have no problem heading into tournament time.

UNF Survives Scare

The only exciting part of this game was when Mercer managed to stick with the Ospreys, and actually take a 51-50 lead early in the 2nd half. Brent Wood said no sir, hit a 3 pointer, proceeded to steal the ball and hit another 3 just seconds later. The rest is history.

The real story for now is the Ospreys NEXT game, in which they play their only scheduled game against cross town rival Jacksonville this season. The game will be played in the Dolphins arena, where they managed to beat North Florida last season. In fact Coach Matthews has never won there, posting an 0-2 record. North Florida did however, respond by beating the Dolphins 120-86 when they played again led by 39 points from Brent Wood.

This rivalry game has been the most exciting part of the A-Sun since Coach Matthews took over the North Florida Ospreys. The Dolphins are thought to be the only team that can stop UNF, but they weren't able to tonight.

Brent Wood tied his season high with 29 points, hitting 8 three pointers, 5 of which were crucial to building a lead in the first half. Emerson Riley was not far behind, putting up 28 points of his own.

The Dolphins did manage to keep it close, which most other teams have not managed this season. The lead was only 10 with four minutes remaining, but Jacksonville just didn't have the firepower to keep up with the Ospreys who lead the NCAA in scoring. The referees were very whistle happy tonight. 4 players fouled out, and a few more were very close. Jacksonville went to the line 44 times, but that wasn't enough for them to keep up with the crazy pace of the game.

With the loss for Jacksonville, they fall to 4-3 in conference play. This sets up for a big game next week between North Florida and Lipscomb, who currently sits at the number 2 spot with a 5-1 record. Florida Gulf Coast is currently 3rd (4-2), followed by Jacksonville.
