Re: Coaching Career of Chris Matthews (CH2k8)

    NCAA Tournament 1st Round Preview

    Point Guards
    UNF: Junior Rivera (JR, 6'4, 73 ovr) - 9.6 PPG, 8.0 APG, 2.2 RPG, 2.0 SPG
    HP: Alquan Mendenhall (SR, 6'0", 66 ovr) - 21.5 PPG, 4.7APG, 2.7 RPG, 1.3 SPG

Advantage: Even - Mendenhall is an amazing scorer, leading the Big South with over 21 points per game. On the flip side, Rivera is an amazing defender and distributor. This is a key match-up. Mendenhall has to get hot for High Point to have a chance.

    Shooting Guards
    UNF: Brent Wood (SR, 6'5, 64 ovr) - 17.4 ppg, 3.2 rpg, 1.6 apg, 39% 3pt
    HP: Matt Smigielski (SR, 6'4", 70 ovr) - 10.3 ppg, 4.2 rpg, 1.1 apg, 37% 3pt

Advantage: UNF - This time last year Wood was the leading scorer in the nation. That's not the case this year, but he is the hottest scorer in the nation. Wood averaged almost 28 points per game during the conference tournament.

    Small Forwards
    UNF: Emanuel Dancy (SO, 6'5", 72 ovr) - 15.8 PPG, 3.7 RPG, 2.0 APG
    HP: Ibrahim Appiah (SR, 6'5", 70 ovr) - 13.6 PPG, 5.7 RPG, 0.7 APG

Advantage: Even - Another really good match-up. Dancy's production has fallen off at the end of the season, or else he would get the nod. Numbers wise this is very even, and a match-up High Point really needs to win.

    Power Forwards
UNF: Jean Francois Monceaux (FR, 7'0", 81 ovr) - 9.1 PPG, 9.1 RPG
    HP: Husein Carpenter (FR, 6'4", 58 ovr) - 3.1 PPG, 2.0 RPG

Advantage: UNF - 7'0" against 6'4"....need we say more? Earnest Bridges would normally be starting here, but due to injury Carpenter is thrown into the mix. Monceaux is known to get into foul trouble, the Panthers better exploit this or things could get ugly.

    Centers
    UNF: Emerson Riley (JR, 7'3", 71 ovr) - 18.9 PPG, 9.3 RPG, 0.8 BPG
    HP: Earnest Bridges (SR, 6'6", 67 ovr) - 9.5 PPG, 6.8 RPG, 0.1 BPG

Advantage: UNF - Another one that could get VERY ugly. FR Douglas Dux (6'10") would normally start here, but got hurt during the conference tournament. Expect godly numbers from Riley, who already averages 19 per game.

    Bench
Advantage: UNF - High Point gets almost all scoring from their starters, and don't have much on the bench. Chi Chi Hatten, a 7'0" FR C, could be key to stopping the Ospreys' big men. Mike Harrington and Austen Kowalczuk usually come off the bench and provide a lift for North Florida.

    X-Factor
    UNF: Riley and Monceaux
    HP: Mendenhall and Guards

North Florida should win this game, and it should be because their big men have no one that can stop them. Their back court will score as well, but there's no reason these guys shouldn't both put up 20 and 10.

Mendenhall and Smigielski can light it up from behind the arc. They both have to, or this one could be ugly.

    Summary:
--This isn't your typical 1 and 16 game. No one expected the Ospreys to be a one seed. They are a small school, and put decent players together and had success. They don't have near the talent as the other top seeds, so they are in fact beatable.

The unfortunate injury to Douglas Dux makes this match-up much less appealing, but High Point will still start 4 seniors who don't want to lose.

”Huge 2nd half explosion makes this one a blowout."
        March 18, 2011

        FINAL
        16 High Point
        (16-12)

        1 North Florida
        (31-1)

UNF - Brent Wood (Pts: 21, Reb: 5, Ast: 2)
HP - Matt Smigielski (Pts: 17, Reb: 0, Ast: 1)

North Florida advances to the 2nd round for the second straight year after a beat down of 16th seeded High Point. In what has become typical UNF fashion, this game was reasonable in the second half, before they went on a huge 2nd half run to make it out of reach. At one point the score was 71-53, before the Ospreys went on a 29-0 run in just 6:30 towards the end of the game.

The Ospreys were a little worried early on, when Junior Rivera picked up 2 fouls less than 2 minutes into the game and had to go on the bench. Shortly after, back-up Colin Harvey went to the bench with 2 fouls. Riley and Dancy had to carry the team with 13 and 11, respectively to keep the Panthers on their toes.

The second half was all Brent Wood. He only scored 4 in the first half, but put up 17 in the final frame to help push his team to the easy victory.

High Point shot just 23% for the game, compared to North Florida's 57%. The Ospreys also hit a remarkable 12 of 19 three point field goals.

North Florida plays the winner of the earlier game, Texas, in the second round. They beat them pretty soundly in Austin the first game of the season, but the Longhorns have been hot lately. They beat 4 tournament teams, including Kansas, to win the Big 12 Conference Tournament.

Glad Purdue moved on. I love the little previews you do, awesome in-depth analysis of it.

May I ask, what sliders do you use? Do you still use cad4life's or have you changed?

Liking the preview as well, and great win over High Point even with players in early foul trouble. Hopefully, that won't be the case against Texas, that should be a great game.

I'm pretty sure it's still the same sliders I started with, but with a few tweaks here and there. It's been over 5 years since I started this though, so I'm not positive. I really need to take a look at trying to tweak them again to make things more realistic, which I'll probably do during the next season.

                        NCAA Tournament 2nd Round Preview

                        Point Guards
                        UNF: Junior Rivera (JR, 6'4, 73 ovr) - 9.6 PPG, 8.0 APG, 2.2 RPG, 2.0 SPG
                        TEX: Jerrell Staple (FR, 5'11", 82 ovr) - 7.0 PPG, 2.7 APG, 2.3 RPG, 1.3 SPG

Advantage: UNF - Staple wasn't starting the first time these teams played, but last year's #1 recruit in the nation has earned the role and will take on one of the best passes in the league in Rivera. Rivera's size and experience should be an advantage here, despite the huge amounts of raw talent Staple has. Rivera put up 18 points against Texas last time the teams met.

                        Shooting Guards
                        UNF: Brent Wood (SR, 6'5, 64 ovr) - 17.4 ppg, 3.2 rpg, 1.6 apg, 39% 3pt
                        TEX: Galen Dearman (JR, 6'3", 90 ovr) - 16.2 ppg, 5.4 rpg, 3.0 apg, 40% 3pt

Advantage: Even - These two met each other blow for blow in the previous game. Wood wound up with 17, and Dearman had 16. Either one of these guys could wind up with 30 in this game if they get hot. Dearman has shot his way into a potential lottery pick in the NBA draft, so he'd like to go out on top.

                        Small Forwards
                        UNF: Emanuel Dancy (SO, 6'5", 72 ovr) - 15.8 PPG, 3.7 RPG, 2.0 APG
                        TEX: Alexis Wangmene (SR, 6'9", 83 ovr) - 6.3 PPG, 4.8 RPG, 0.2 APG

Advantage: UNF - Wangmene plays out of position, as he is really more of a power forward. Dancy exploited this big time, scoring 20 points in the first game of the season to lead all scorers. Texas should be able to grab a couple of extra boards with the size advantage, however.

                        Power Forwards
UNF: Jean Francois Monceaux (FR, 7'0", 81 ovr) - 9.1 PPG, 9.1 RPG
                        TEX: Gary Johnson (SR, 6'8", 86 ovr) - 17.3 PPG, 8.7 RPG

Advantage: TEX - This one is a bit of a toss up, but we are expecting Johnson to have success against Monceaux, who has been a bit of a disappointment so far for the Ospreys. Monceaux has had a big problem with foul trouble, and anyone that gets brought in off the bench for him will get destroyed by Johnson.

                        Centers
                        UNF: Emerson Riley (JR, 7'3", 71 ovr) - 18.9 PPG, 9.3 RPG, 0.8 BPG
                        TEX: Clint Chapman (SR, 6'11", 80 ovr) - 9.9 PPG, 4.3 RPG, 0.5 BPG

Advantage: UNF - Finally someone for Riley to play against that isn't a huge height advantage. Chapman played him pretty well, but couldn't stop him from putting up points. Don't expect him to in this one, unless he can get him into foul trouble.

                        Bench
Advantage: TEX - The Longhorns have FR PG Sherman Moss as their 6th man now, who started against the Ospreys before. He can light it up from 3, and put up 17 points to lead Texas in that game. They also have Dogus Balbay, who averages 9.6PPG off the bench. The downside for the Longhorns is that they don't have a single big man on the bench. That could prove very costly.

                        X-Factor
                        UNF: Riley and Monceaux
                        TEX: Dearman and Bench

Same story for the Ospreys. The bigs have to produce as it is their big advantage. The Longhorns don't have any depth at the forward positions.

Dearman HAS to produce in this one. He can't afford to let Wood beat him in the scoring battle, because Texas doesn't have enough places to make up for it. The bench has to come in and produce as well, as that's where their guards will have the biggest advantage.

                        Summary:
--North Florida shocked the Longhorns in the first game of the season in Austin, beating them 97-88. They then went on to have an amazing season, while Texas struggled through it but got hot when it mattered and won the Big 12 tournament.

Expect this one to be a great game, high scoring game. North Florida scores more than anyone else in the country, but the Longhorns are right behind them scoring the 4th most. Texas has all the talent in the world, but hasn't been able to make it work at times. North Florida has taken what talent they have and turned it into an amazing team.

                          Emerson Riley couldn't be stopped.

This game was a fast-paced, exciting thrill ride. North Florida hasn't been tested like this since their loss to Florida State earlier in the year, and they pulled through and proved that they can win a close game.

The Ospreys started this one out on fire, going on a 13-0 run to start the game off. It looked as if this one would be like almost every other game they played this year and end in a blow out. Texas wasn't going to go down without a fight though, and they slowly took that lead away. They started the game 1-10, but finished the half going 14-16 and taking the lead into halftime.

The Longhorns actually led the majority of the 2nd half as well. The Ospreys couldn't get a lead until the 7:51 to go mark, but Texas took it right back behind Dearman, who was hot in the 2nd half. That's when Emerson Riley started to do his thing, and took over this game. A huge slam dunk at the 6:00 mark changed this game.

North Florida held on to a 2-point lead with just 1:10 to go. Riley made yet another bucket to make it 4, and then a steal and dish to Riley once again for another huge slam made it 6 with just 50 seconds to go. The Ospreys hit their free throws and sealed the deal.

The unsung heroes of this game for UNF were Monceaux and Harvey. Both Riley and Rivera were in foul trouble, and if it weren't for those two Texas probably would have run away with this one. Riley played just 18 minutes, but scored 34 points in that time. Monceaux put up a career high 21 points, the majority came while Riley was on the bench.

                                Road to the Final Four
                                Sweet 16 Preview

                                East Region

                                (1) Florida vs. (4) UNLV
This is a very even match-up. Florida is still playing without Jai Lucas, which will catch up to them as they start playing better competition. UNLV is averaging 97.5ppg in the tournament, led by JR SG Hector Collum who has contributed 23ppg to that. The Gators need someone to step up and put points on the board, or they'll have to try and slow the Runnin Rebels down somehow.

                                (2) UCLA vs. (11) Oklahoma St
UCLA will be favored by a few in this one, even though OK St just knocked off a VERY good Louisville team to advance to the Sweet 16. They need big performances from James Anderson (18.1ppg) and Martavis Adams (20.7ppg) to win this one.

                                West Region

                                (1) North Florida vs. (12) La Salle
La Salle is an unexpected Cinderella team, knocking off both Michigan and Michigan St to get this far. They had a respectable record, but finished 11th in the A-10. It took a huge conference tournament and winning it to make it in the tourny at all. They play a team in North Florida that is used to blowing teams out, but they just had a very close one against the Longhorns. La Salle lacks size, and that has spelled big trouble for teams facing UNF.

                                (3) Texas A&M-Corpus Christi vs. (2) Arizona
Arizona has lost the past two National Championship games against Duke. Duke didn't make the tournament this year, so the Wildcats are hoping no one can stop them this season. Garrison Martin has been lighting teams up, don't look for that to change. The Islanders have had a dream season, only losing two games, one against Florida and the other Oklahoma St. Both of those teams also reached the Sweet 16. They've won 22 in a row, and hope to prove their worth by beating Arizona.

                                South Region

                                (4) Iowa St vs. (9) Washington
Neither one of these teams has done anything spectacular in the tournament, but they both advanced. Washington has been playing without two starters, which makes it remarkable that they knocked off the 1 Seed Georgetown. Craig Brackins has been quite for the Cyclones, he needs to be closer to his 19.3 points per game average if they want to continue on.

                                (2) DePaul vs. (13) East Carolina
East Caroline, the most surprising Cinderella in a long, long time. This team finished LAST in C-USA, going 4-12. They miraculously won their conference tournament to get into the dance, and that hot streak continued. They knocked off Pitt, who some predicted to reach the Final 4, in overtime. Then they beat a very good Marquette team in a close game. Now they are looking for the 3-peat over Big East opponents by knocking off the 2 seed DePaul.

                                Midwest Region

                                (4) Cincinnati vs. (9) Penn St
Penn St is another team no one really picked to even win a game. Battle has led them through the first two rounds, including knocking off a #1 seed in Clemson. Cincinnati and Nick Aldridge (24ppg) have destroyed both of their opponents, and hope to do so again to reach the Elite 8.

                                (3) Purdue vs. (7) LSU
LSU had one of the biggest wins of all, beating Kansas who everyone thought should be a 1 seed. Purdue is a great team, but their biggest weakness is at point guard, where LSU has a great one in Jess McCroskey. They will probably try to exploit that in hopes of moving on.
