    NCAA Tournament Championship Game Preview

Houston, TX -- When it comes down to it, very few picked either of these teams to make it this far. Experts argued that two or three other teams deserved the one seed more than the Ospreys. Those same experts said DePaul wouldn't make it past the Sweet 16. This is why we play the games, because now both of these teams are playing in the National Title game looking for their first every championship.

DePaul made it here after their best season ever. They got hot at the right time, as their only loss in the past 10 games was to Georgetown, who was a one seed, in their conference tournament. They are led by experience, with 5 seniors and 5 juniors on their roster. Mac Koshwal was their best player all year. The 6'11" senior averaged over 18 points per game, but has struggled the past 3 games of the tournament. He'll be matched up with super big Emerson Riley so he'll need to be on top of his game.

North Florida also has had their best season ever. They've seen several school firsts this year, including their first ever national ranking. Their only loss this season came at Florida State in overtime. Since then, they've won 30 in a row to make it to this point. The Ospreys are led by big 7'3" Emerson Riley. He's dominated anything and everything thrown his way. Also coming off his best game of the season is Brent Wood, who has struggled this year after leading the nation in scoring the past one.

The Blue Demons have had the easier ride to the championship game. They knocked off 15 seed F. Dickinson, 10 seed Houston, 14 seed East Carolina, 4 seed Iowa St, and 3 seed Purdue. The Ospreys had a tougher rode, including playing 3 of the top 5 scoring teams in the nation. They beat 16 seed High Point, 8 seed Texas, 12 seed La Salle, 2 seed Arizona, and 1 seed Florida.

Look for this game to be about speed. North Florida likes to light things up and get scores in the 90's, while DePaul prefers to keep it in the 70's and below.

    In-Depth Look at the Line-Ups

    Point Guards
    UNF: Junior Rivera (JR, 6'4, 73 ovr) - 9.4 PPG, 8.3 APG, 2.1 RPG, 1.9 SPG
    DEP: Damion Abbott (JR, 6'2, 82 ovr) - 7.1 PPG, 4.7 APG, 3.3 RPG, 1.4 SPG

Advantage: UNF - Junior Rivera is coming off of back-to-back 15 assist games against two of the best teams in this tournament Florida and Arizona. It's going to be hard to top that performance if he has one like it again. Abbott can score a bunch of points when he gets hot, but it doesn't happen very often. He only scored 2 points against Purdue because he fouled out in just 16 minutes played.

    Shooting Guards
    UNF: Brent Wood (SR, 6'5, 64 ovr) - 17.7 ppg, 3.3 rpg, 1.9 apg, 39% 3pt
    DEP: Jared Jackson (FR, 6'3", 77 ovr) - 6.3 ppg, 3.2 rpg, 2.8 apg, 37% 3pt

Advantage: UNF - Jackson gets the start for DePaul once again since JR Bennett Cole (8.5ppg) is still out after getting hurt in the first round game. Wood is the lone senior on this Osprey team, and you know he wants to go out with a bang. He is currently 18th on the all time scoring list, and looks to have another big game in what will be his last.

    Small Forwards
    UNF: Emanuel Dancy (SO, 6'5", 72 ovr) - 15.7 PPG, 3.8 RPG, 2.1 APG
    DEP: Dar Tucker (SR, 66", 83 ovr) - 16.1 PPG, 4.7 RPG, 0.8 APG

Advantage: Even - This match-up is tough to call. You might could give Tucker a slight advantage due to his play in the tournament, but Dancy just put up 22 points in one half against Florida so it's hard to tell. This one could be a difference maker.

    Power Forwards
UNF: Jean Francois Monceaux (FR, 7'0", 81 ovr) - 9.3 PPG, 8.9 RPG
    DEP: Sky Davidson (JR, 6'9", 82 ovr) - 10.3 PPG, 4.3 RPG, 2.2 BPG

Advantage: Even - This is another tough one to call. Monceaux has been a beast when he can stay out of foul trouble, but it seems like he is always in foul trouble. The size advantage could play a role here, but Davidson is a big that can high the 3-ball if he wants. He's also one of the best shot blockers in the country. He's scored 20, 19, and 20 in his last three games, so Monceaux is sure to have his hands full.

    Centers
    UNF: Emerson Riley (JR, 7'3", 71 ovr) - 19.6 PPG, 9.2 RPG, 0.9 BPG
    DEP: Mac Koshwal (SR, 6'11", 83 ovr) - 18.1 PPG, 7.4 RPG, 0.9 BPG

Advantage: Even - This is the one to watch right here. After back to back 30 point games, Riley struggled with foul trouble against Arizona and Florida. He's looking to bounce back with a big game on the biggest stage. Koshwal has also struggled in the tournament after dominated Big East opponents all year. Neither one of these guys has faced one as big as the other in the tournament, and we'll see how they handle it.

    Bench
Advantage: UNF - The Blue Demons' bench is very thin. Bizoukas averages the most points per game off of it, and that's only 3.2. Kenechukwu Obi will be a huge factor for them. The 7'2" senior will be called upon to stop Riley and Monceaux down low. Stula will also be key if they want to win, as he's their longball threat off the bench. Kowalczuk and Harrington have been very reliable for UNF off the bench. Either one of them can come on and score 10+ points to help the team.

    X-Factor
    UNF: Guards
    DEP: Big Men/Bench

Wood and Dancy did exactly what they needed to against Florida. They knocked down a ton of big threes that propelled them to victory. They have the advantage in this one, so they need to take advantage of it and make DePaul pay.

Davidson and Koshwal will have their hands full, but they can't let themselves be intimidated. They both need to stick to their game plan and contribute to the offense and defense. The Blue Demons also need someone on the bench to step up, because it's likely that this game could be high scoring and they'll need help from someone putting up points.

North Florida is the 2011 National Champions!!
”Ospreys overwhelm Blue Demons to take first national title."
          April 4, 2011

Emerson Riley, Emanuel Dancy, and Brent Wood all had reason to celebrate, a National Championship.

          -----------------------------------------------------------------------------

          FINAL
          2 DePaul
          (29-8)
          3343 76
          1 North Florida
          (36-1)
          524294
          Players of the Game
UNF - Emanuel Dancy (Pts: 25, Reb: 4, Ast: 2)
DEP - Mac Kochwal (Pts: 18, Reb: 6, Ast: 4)

Houston, TX -- Well folks, this certainly wasn't the close game that we all hoped for, but it's always exciting to see a small school like the North Florida Ospreys succeed. Tonight they did to a very good DePaul team what they've done to the little guys all year and just scored more points than the Blue Demons could keep up with.

Just like against Florida, the Ospreys jumped out to a quick lead that they would never surrender. This is a different look for North Florida, who had been predominantly a 2nd half team throughout the season and beginning of the tournament. One theme stayed true, however, foul trouble. The Ospreys had 3 of their 4 forwards with two fouls very early in the game.

DePaul just couldn't find a way to score against the Ospreys early on. The size and pace of the game seemed to be too much for them to handle, and the Ospreys sprang to a 35-20 lead. They had a huge momentum booster when Cliff Slattery, who was 1-23 on the year, hit a 3-pointer from the corner to increase the lead.

Dancy led all scorers at the break with 15, but all of the starters were doing well. Rivera (8), Wood (9), and Riley (11) had all contributed to the lead. Tucker (4), Davidson (1), and Koshwal (5) only had 10 points combined at halftime. Abbott (7) and Jackson (7) had to lead the way to keep it from getting more out of hand.

With 10:00 to go in the game, and significant foul trouble for the Ospreys, DePaul managed to cut the lead to just 12 points. That's as close as they were able to get, because North Florida had an answer for everything they threw at them.

The Ospreys' lone senior, Brent Wood, had an emotional night but managed to put up a great effort in his final game. Wood finished with 19 points, and had a career high 6 assists. He finishes his career with a record 501 3-pointers made. His 2,737 career points is good for 17th most all time, and the most ever by an A-Sun player.

So what's next for Coach Matthews and the North Florida Ospreys? How do you come back from such a remarkable season? Wood is the only senior on the team, though it's hard to replace a top-20 all time scorer. They have some solid recruits they are seeking, and it's hard to imagine that they could be even better next season. DePaul will have some major rebuilding to do, losing 5 seniors.

BREAKING NEWS: University Source "Chris Matthews Won't Coach Ospreys Next Season"
              April 6, 2011

Jacksonville, FL - It's only been a couple of days since the remarkable run the Ospreys had this season to win the championship, but already there are reports that coach Chris Matthews will no longer be the coach here at UNF. There is no doubt that some schools will be after him after leading such a small school to a National Title, but for this to come so soon and out of nowhere has the locals worried.

No names have come up yet, but the source is claiming a deal is "already done." There were similar rumors last season that had Matthews leaving for Missouri St. So there is still hope since he wound up turning that offer down and returned to coach the Ospreys.

One would think that with 4 of your 5 starters returning from a National Title would keep you at North Florida for at least 1 more season but I think you are ready for bigger challenge. You have done what most have never done by winning a chip with a roster of low 70 rated players.

Will be very interesting to see if you are able to make the jump straight to a Major/Power conference or if you will still have to build your resume with a Mid-Major

I am assuming that with a National Title you have completed several attributes points and your coach must be a B Overall or better?

You have done what most have never done by winning a chip with a roster of low 70 rated players.

Will be very interesting to see if you are able to make the jump straight to a Major/Power conference or if you will still have to build your resume with a Mid-Major

I am assuming that with a National Title you have completed several attributes points and your coach must be a B Overall or better?
I'm torn because of all of the players returning, and some extremely talented ones coming in. At this point a new job would be simply to keep my interest. Winning 30+ games isn't as fun as having to work for it. That's the main reason for moving on, but at the same time much better offers will come if I wait one more year including about a 50/50 chance of one of the "dream jobs" for Matthews.

CONFIRMED: Chris Matthews Tells School He Is Moving On
                          April 7, 2011

Jacksonville, FL - It's been an amazing three days for the school, celebrating an incredible season that resulted in a National Championship. We first got word of a potential departure of Coach Chris Matthews leaving yesterday, and we are now able to confirm that is the case. While it was bound to happen at some point, it comes so soon after glory.

No one seems to know where Matthews will be coaching next year, if at all. One would think that it would have to be a great offer for him to give up returning 4 starters from a national championship team as well as a great recruiting class coming in. We also do not know if the school has any replacements in mind. One thing we do know is that we are thankful for Chris Matthews' time here, and he has set this school and whoever it's next coach may be up for success for many years to come.

                              Little Movement in Coaching Carousel
                              April 7, 2011

New York, NY - The college basketball season is done. Now is the time where we usually see a good amount of change between coaching positions. This year, however, there has been hardly any news especially with larger conference teams. It seems like the majority of them are content with their current coaches.

Presumably the top candidate would be the man who just led North Florida to a national championship, Chris Matthews. There are reports that he has been contacted by multiple schools, but no major job openings. Sources indicate that he does have an offer from an A-10 school, as well as several in Conference USA. Perhaps once he decides what school he will be going to, there dominos will start to fall.

Looking at those two conferences, a few teams that could be in the running are Duquesne, Fordham, UMass, Tulsa, and UCF. All of those teams struggled, with UMass and UCF fairing the worst of the bunch. Now those are just from the conferences that there have been rumors swirling around. There could very well be a surprise team that takes a chance on Matthews' character.

                                Coaching Carousel in Full Swing
                                April 8, 2011

New York, NY - Chris Matthews came out and released a statement finally regarding his next move. All it said was "One. More. Year." One could assume that he plans to return to the Ospreys for at least one more season based on that. Other schools seemed to assume so as the coaching carousel is in full swing.

Auburn fired Jeff Lebo after a 10-21 season where they only went 3-13 in SEC play. They hired Bobby Cremins from who led College of Charleston to back-to-back NCAA Tournament appearances. Jeff Lebo was hired by Hartford after their coach Leibovitz took the vacant Idaho job.

UMass fired Travis Ford after a few bad seasons. They replaced him with Pat Douglas, who had been leading UC Irvine. They had not made the postseason recently, but have consistently been in top 3 of the conferences. Ford will take over at Grambling, whose coach Marigney took the open position at Troy.

Other moves include R. Hunter from IUPUI taking over at Tulsa after D. Wojcik was fired. MD Eastern-Shore coach L. Pugh will take over at Tulane after D.Dickerson was fired.
