Point Guards
UNF: Junior Rivera (JR, 6'4, 73 ovr) - 9.6 PPG, 8.0 APG, 2.2 RPG, 2.0 SPG
HP: Alquan Mendenhall (SR, 6'0", 66 ovr) - 21.5 PPG, 4.7APG, 2.7 RPG, 1.3 SPG
Advantage: Even - Mendenhall is an amazing scorer, leading the Big South with over 21 points per game. On the flip side, Rivera is an amazing defender and distributor. This is a key match-up. Mendenhall has to get hot for High Point to have a chance.
Shooting Guards
UNF: Brent Wood (SR, 6'5, 64 ovr) - 17.4 ppg, 3.2 rpg, 1.6 apg, 39% 3pt
HP: Matt Smigielski (SR, 6'4", 70 ovr) - 10.3 ppg, 4.2 rpg, 1.1 apg, 37% 3pt
Advantage: UNF - This time last year Wood was the leading scorer in the nation. That's not the case this year, but he is the hottest scorer in the nation. Wood averaged almost 28 points per game during the conference tournament.
Small Forwards
UNF: Emanuel Dancy (SO, 6'5", 72 ovr) - 15.8 PPG, 3.7 RPG, 2.0 APG
HP: Ibrahim Appiah (SR, 6'5", 70 ovr) - 13.6 PPG, 5.7 RPG, 0.7 APG
Advantage: Even - Another really good match-up. Dancy's production has fallen off at the end of the season, or else he would get the nod. Numbers wise this is very even, and a match-up High Point really needs to win.
Power Forwards
UNF: Jean Francois Monceaux (FR, 7'0", 81 ovr) - 9.1 PPG, 9.1 RPG
HP: Husein Carpenter (FR, 6'4", 58 ovr) - 3.1 PPG, 2.0 RPG
Advantage: UNF - 7'0" against 6'4"....need we say more? Earnest Bridges would normally be starting here, but due to injury Carpenter is thrown into the mix. Monceaux is known to get into foul trouble, the Panthers better exploit this or things could get ugly.
Centers
UNF: Emerson Riley (JR, 7'3", 71 ovr) - 18.9 PPG, 9.3 RPG, 0.8 BPG
HP: Earnest Bridges (SR, 6'6", 67 ovr) - 9.5 PPG, 6.8 RPG, 0.1 BPG
Advantage: UNF - Another one that could get VERY ugly. FR Douglas Dux (6'10") would normally start here, but got hurt during the conference tournament. Expect godly numbers from Riley, who already averages 19 per game.
Bench
Advantage: UNF - High Point gets almost all scoring from their starters, and don't have much on the bench. Chi Chi Hatten, a 7'0" FR C, could be key to stopping the Ospreys' big men. Mike Harrington and Austen Kowalczuk usually come off the bench and provide a lift for North Florida.
X-Factor
UNF: Riley and Monceaux
HP: Mendenhall and Guards
North Florida should win this game, and it should be because their big men have no one that can stop them. Their back court will score as well, but there's no reason these guys shouldn't both put up 20 and 10.
Mendenhall and Smigielski can light it up from behind the arc. They both have to, or this one could be ugly.
Summary:
--This isn't your typical 1 and 16 game. No one expected the Ospreys to be a one seed. They are a small school, and put decent players together and had success. They don't have near the talent as the other top seeds, so they are in fact beatable.
The unfortunate injury to Douglas Dux makes this match-up much less appealing, but High Point will still start 4 seniors who don't want to lose.
