Top Storylines
1. Who are the Contenders and Pretenders?
The Nets and Nuggets are leading their respective conferences and are looking like contenders for the title. The Mavericks and Magic have had big wins all year, and certainly look up to task. But after that who else has a shot? The Hawks are inconsistent, the Lakers look out-classed, the Kings are inexperienced, the Knicks' point guard troubles is hurting them, and the usual contenders like the Spurs and Celtics time seems to have expired. Over the next couple months we hope this will become more apparent, as teams head into the stretch run for the NBA championship.
2. Trade Aftermath & Possibilities
The Wizards trading Arenas to Philadelphia, and Jamison to Portland shook up the NBA landscape. The Wizards are left with Caron Butler and the now-injured Greg Oden (when isn't he?) and are vanishing from the playoff hunt. The 76ers are currently struggling with Arenas and behind, but once this team gets to know how to play with each other they could be deadly, and sneak into the playoffs as a spoiler. The Blazers have really been struggling, but it hasn't been Jamison's fault. In his debut he had 45 points and 10 rebounds, but still they are losing games. The short front court is hurting them, giving up Oden, so they may have to sign someone to help out Jamison and Aldridge.
While this trade has been completed, many more are expected. The Celtics are thinking of cleaning up, which means Allen and Garnett may be on the move. The Bulls want Ray Ray, and want to move Hinrich and possibly Luol Deng. The New Orleans Hornets are shopping Darren Collison, for a scoring 2-guard to help out Chris Paul.
3. MVP & ROY race
The MVP race is always a hot topic of discussion and the early favorite is Dwight Howard. He is putting up absurd numbers every night averaging 24.6 ppg, and 13.9 rpg. He has lead the Magic to the 2nd spot in the East. Carmelo Anthony closely trails, leading the NBA in scoring, and helping his Nuggets to first in the Western Conference. LeBron and Wade are both playing great, but cancel each other's stats out which leaves them behind, although they are still in the hunt. Bosh has helped revamp the New York Knicks, and his 25.9 ppg, and 12.7 rpg make him a candidate.
The Rookie of the Year race is boiling down to two players. John Wall who is averaging 15 ppg, and 7 apg, or Blake Griffin, averaging 14 ppg, and 10 rpg. Griffin is a possibility since he did not play one minute last year due to injury. This rookie class has put up some bad statistics and so far has looked like a weak class. Evan Turner, Donatas Motiejunas, and Ed Davis remain dark horses for this award.
