In the opening round of the AEC tournament, the UNH Wildcats hold on to win a nail-biter 51-50 over the Binghamton Bearcats. The two junior captains, Chandler Rhoads and Chris Matagrano, led the way with 15 points each. Jerrod Finley gobbled up a game-high 8 rebounds and added a steal and a block to set the tone on the defensive end. An ugly win, but in tournament life, it's survive and advance!

The Wildcats, after beating the Great Danes of Albany 55-51, are now just one win away from winning the America East tournament and earning a berth into the NCAA tournament! UNH did not shoot the ball well at all, but made a living at the free throw line, shooting 19-25 from the stripe while Albany only hit on 10 of their 24 attempts. Ugly wins count as much as the pretty ones, and this one puts Coach Rizzo at the 20-win plateau for the first time in his career!

Congrats on getting to 20 wins. Now lets just hope you can get 1 more and make the NCAA tourney.

Hopefully you can get a 3rd scoring option besides Rhodes and Matagrano

Hartford made in improbable run making it all the way to the AEC tournament title game after winning the play-in game against UMBC, upsetting #1 seed Vermont and then handling the #4 seed Maine Black Bears. It looked like they were destined to win this tournament and earn a berth into the NCAA tournament. The UNH Wildcats were 2-0 against Hartford in the regular season and had the confidence they needed to get a win today, and that's exactly what they did.

After leading 26-16 at halftime, the Wildcats didn't look back and ran away with it, winning with a final score of 64-43 and not only crowned the AEC tournament champions but guaranteed a spot in the NCAA tournament! The Wildcats are going dancing this year, folks!

As big as the win was to get me one step closer to winning the AEC tournament, I was almost more concerned with getting that coaching point for a 20-win season. And yes, we could desperately use someone to step up and becoming a consistent scorer. Too bad Matagrano is allergic to rebounds...

Wildcats "Awarded" 15 Seed, Take on Texas

In just his second year as the coach of the New Hampshire Wildcats, AJ Rizzo leads the school to their first every trip to the NCAA tournament. There were many skeptics saying that maybe he was in over his head last year after going 10-19 in his first season in Durham. This solidifies his position as a Division I head coach and a win in the opening round of the tournament would go a long way for his career.

As one would assume, a win won't be an easy task as they will take on the #2 seeded Texas Longhorns. Looking at the matchup, there isn't one aspect of basketball where the Wildcats are favored and it will take a perfect game to pull the upset. Win or lose, the season has been a great success for this program.

Re: Career Legacy of AJ Rizzo - CH2k11

Arguably the best season in New Hampshire basketball is officially over. In the first round of the 2012 NCAA tournament, the Wildcats were knocked off by perennial powerhouse Texas as the Longhorns got the win 54-45. A nine point loss to a far superior team is nothing to get down about and even better was the fact that UNH led by five at the half. In the end, the length, skill and athleticism of the Longhorns was just too much for the Wildcats to handle.

Coach Rizzo feels bad that the season is now over, but the entire roster will be back next season. With the two new recruits, everyone around the program fully expects them to be dancing again next year!

Tough loss. Looks like you guys played great D but just couldn't find that 3rd scorer you need. Hopefully by next year you can find it.

It was tough, but not unexpected. I'm just excited to get to the next season and see how this team grows especially when adding in two three-star prospects into the fold. One is a JuCo SF who hopefully can bring some scoring punch off the bench and the other is a defensive C who should fit the new style of play nicely.

7 of 16 free throws and you lost by 9. Man that's a heart breaker right there. Good luck next season I guess. I'm looking forward to seeing this team grow

Pressure bursts pipes and while we were standing on the line, we just weren't able to them down.

Exceeded all expectations coming into the season. Difficult decision now is whether to stay another season or leave for greener pastures.
