    Valentine's Smackdown

    vs.

The Huskers have been trying to prove doubters wrong all season -- and part of that is taking care of business at home against beatable opponents. They did more than that tonight: thuroughly dominating the hottest team in the Big 12 by snapping Kansas State's 4 game win streak by a 81-55 margin.

The Wildcats were ineffective in the middle, with their big men constantly getting outplayed by L.F. Callahan. Meanwhile, the back court imploded by taking poor shots, turning over the ball, and not staying involved on defense. Nebraska pushed the tempo all game and no matter what Coach West implored his players to do they just did not stay committed on defense. They were down early, and then the Wildcats were out entirely.

With the win Nebraksa moves into a tie for second in the Big 12. Meanwhile, the Wildcats drop back into the middle of the pack.

Drought Over? K-State Looks Tourney Bound

As February rolls towards March, more and more pundits are beginning to look into the crystal ball and predict the Tournament field. Right now the consensus shows the Big 12 as placing anywhere between five and seven (yes, seven!) teams into the field, including hard luck Kansas State breaking into the Tournament as a #7 seed.

Of course, there is still a month to go, and more losses like their most recent game against Nebraksa could derail the whole train. But after a slow start it looks like fans in Manhattan are going to have a lot to get excited about in the Guy West era.

        Slugging it Out

        #17 vs.

Wins come in all shapes and sizes in baskestball, but some games are about who can put their head down and grind it out. Colorado and Kansas State entered the game tied in the conference standings and coming off of disappointing losses. They both wanted this game badly, and it showed.

The game started with the teams matching shots again and again, and the score remained close until Colorado's star Point Guard, Ronald McFagdon, got into foul trouble late in the half. That gave the Wildcats the edge they needed to eek out a narrow halftime lead.

DeMarcus Ross and Dandorris Walls work over the entire Colorado defense.

The difference in the first half was Kansas State's ability to control the middle of the floor. With both teams able to convert from the perimeter, Walls and Ross were able to shut down Colorado's bigs and score opportunistic baskets off of their teammates' misses.

Branduinn Gatling works off the ball to get the three.

However, the Wildcats were never able to get enough separation to make the game comfortable. Instead, it would come down to some clutch shooting by Esteban Kummer, who scored all of his 12 points in the second half, and Branduinn Gatling. Any time it looked like the Buffaloes were about to take the lead and take back momentum, both freshmen stepped to the plate and batted them back. Eventually Colorado was forced the foul, but Justin Guzman calmly hit enough free throws to carry the day.

As a result, Kansas State gets another conference win by a final score of 70-64. Colorado had their shots, and on many other nights their effort would have been enough to get a victory. But as February moves to March, Kansas State had the drive and intensity it needed to compete. After lacking that fire just a month ago, it looks like the Wildcats are growing up at just the right time.

Love the balanced scoring. Your only starter that did not reach double figures was the one that took the most shots!

That's how it goes sometimes. Unfortunately, Walls has a terrible habit of finishing weak at the rim, often opting for the layup instead of the dunk. As a result, he misses shots that should be flushed right in for someone who is 6'11"

              Moving Forward, But The Cost...

              vs.

Tonight the Kansas State Wildcats showed the had what it took to not only hang with the top team in the Big 12, but to earn the season sweep. Unfortunately for the Wildcats, the win came at a price.

Branduinn Gatling shows he is more than a spot-up shooter.

In yet another hard fought, close Big 12 match-up, both Kansas State and Baylor ran the court and excelled in their halfcourt offenses. This was a classic shooter's duel between Kansas State's Branduinn Gatling and Baylor's Frederic Blair. They both were able to get whatever they wanted on offense -- Blair from mid range and driving to the basket, Gatling from beyond the arc.

But they key difference in this one was who was able to get help. The Wildcats played with more intensity on defense. Furthermore, Dandorriss Walls attacked the basket with near constant reckless abandon. He was a very effective 1A to Gatling being the first option.

Baylor got some help from the refs to stay in the game: out of bounds and a foul!

But no matter how hard Kansas State pushed ahead, Baylor was never out of it. Some questionable refereeing aside, what kept the Bears in contention was some opportunistic three point shooting. Steven Stills got into the act and tried to bring the Bears back by himself in the closing minutes. But he could only bring the lead to within 7 before driving to the basket from the wing and running straight into Branduinn Gatling.

The collision itself looked innocuous, but the way Gatling crumpled to the floor was not lost on the home crowd. He fell holding his leg, and after putting up such a fight against the Bears it was a shame that he would not be able to see the whole game out.

However, what Gatling started, the rest of the Wildcats finished. Esteban Kummer and Justin Guzman hit threes to complete an impressive shooting night by the Wildcats. Meanwhile, Walls scored another big basket in transition to put the game away for good. Only a last second jumper by the Bears narrowed the final margin to 86-80.

X-rays on Gatling were negative, but it is unclear whether he will be available for Kansas State's game against Missouri.

Figures he'd get hurt in the closing minutes, but it wasn't one of those games where I could rest my starters. Baylor kept it close. And actually he is not listed as "out," so that's a lucky break at this critical juncture of the season.

Yeah I remember you from the start. Gogo (OS) street cred.

A College Hoops 2k14 would be one of the very few games I would purchase day one at full price. DO WANT. It's amazing how 2k Studios nailed recruiting so well (along with Dynasty mode as a whole). It really has stood the test of time even without subsequent releases.

                      Top Shelf Cat Fight
                      vs. #6

Many expected the Missouri Tigers to be competing for the Big 12 crown by this stage of the season. But few saw Guy West's batch of younglings competing in the conference so quickly. But tonight's match up between the #1 and #3 team in the Big 12 did a little to restore order. Missouri looked like a legitimate threat to compete for a #1 Seed in the NCAA Tournament. As for the Wildcats? They hung tough for awhile, but Kansas State showed they still are a work in progress by faltering in the second half.

Although the Wildcats could not get their offense totally on track in the first half, they were able to stay within one point of the Tigers at the half. This despite Banduinn Gatling attempting to play but being a step slow. The standout freshman small forward was not nearly as assertive on offense and was a defensive liability. The Wildcats were far more effective with Esteban Kummer or Moses Mathis at the 3.

Missouri turned it up in the second half, including this half court ally-opp in transition.

But in the second half it did not matter. The Wildcat's game plan was complete crushed under Missouri's superior talent and experience. The Tigers attacked the middle, and their big men dominated West's normally standout front line. In a way, the Tigers came into the half almost insulted that a lineup full of Freshmen were going toe to toe with them. They ran circles around the Wildcats in the second half, and kept them from getting anything going.

Their pressure defense contributed to 14 second half turnovers by the Wildcats, and Coach West could nothing to get his team back in line. The pressure was too much, and eventually there was nothing to do with the white flag. It was closer than expected at first, but Missouri earned a big win with swarming defense by a final score of 65-46.

Good first half. It fell apart in the second. That happens on the road.

That's a tough loss, but even the best teams almost always lose on the road to Top 10 teams.

                            Returning the Favor
                            #9 vs.

Texas is a better team than their record indicates -- and clearly pollsters agree. After a testing themselves with quality competition early in the year, the Longhorns are turning it on at the right time. And after an earlier embarrassment at home against the Kansas State Wildcats, Coach Barnes' squad was eager to even the score.

Roland Vargas got what he wanted whenever he wanted against a clearly hobbled Banduinn Gatling, but the Wildcats were able to keep pace for much of the first half. Unfortunately, the turnover bug hit the Wildcats just like it did in their prior loss to Missouri. Kansas State had its chances to keep up, but eventually Texas would push its lead to double digits after four straight turnovers, including two by Dana Worthington, in the second half.

The Wildcats would whittle away at Texas' lead, but they were too good and too strong at home. In the end, it would be Texas getting some closure from their earlier home court loss by a final score of 71-62.

Tough last few games. The road is always hard. The team will come together come March.

Yeah, and the Tigers came out a completely different team in the second half. It was like playing two different ball games.

I hope so, but considering March is here we better come together fast! My next two games are very winnable (Texas A&M, Texas Tech) and then hopefully I can make some noise in the conference tournament.

I agree. I knew it was a tough slate going in, even if I hate committing so many turnovers the past few games. Unfortunately it looks like the selection committee could be a little unforgiving. I've dropped from a predicted 6th seed from last week all the way down to a 9th. Ouch. Just by two losses to top ten teams on the road.
