Re: CH2k8-- The coaching Legacy of Dan Baker

    Gunn leads Jacks by Mustangs!

(AP) - Jamarr Gunn has brought the Jacks and coach Baker one of the things he has wanted since he started here coaching the Jacks. That is a Big man that is a force to be reckoned with inside. Gunn was drawing double and sometimes even triple teams but had no problems attacking the rim and scored a game high 33 points. Vandrell Smith had 18 with four 3 pointers but the rest of the team had only 19 points total. Talk about carrying your team!

Coaches Corner: This kid is amazing, I can't knock Alford, Dunnington or Diarra from last year but this kid can do things they never did, he ignites the crowd with his dunks, makes layups and even made some jump shots even went in. With Smith and him on the Inside outside we have a chance to dominate the entire conference this year.
Up Next: The Jacks go back home to face the 1-0 Arkansas Little Rock Trojans

Injury Note: Troy Kinloch suffered a High Ankle Sprain and will miss 27 days.

      Jacks blow Trojans out!

(AP) - In a game that featured solid team play by the Jacks Vandrell Smith and Jamarr Gunn had team high 14 points each and led the team in scoring. The entire team with the exception of injured Kinloch played in the game and all 11 scored.

Coaches Corner: Just a solid game, no one really stands out as having a great game, was just a great team effort. We held the Trojans under 30% in shooting and it really showed towards the end of the game when they couldn't make a bucket.

Up Next: Jacks go to see the Texas Longhorns for the second time this season.

        Jacks come up inches short!

(AP) - The Jacks lost today by the skin of their teeth and a last second shot by the Texas Longhorns. O.J. Whitworth led the team with 22 points and brought the Jacks to a tie ball game with 20 seconds to go. Whitworth took a shot to take the lead with 10 seconds to go and it clanked off the rim which allowed Texas to hit a running jumper at the end of regulation to take the game.

Coaches Corner: I think this shows everyone we are for real this year. A 3 point loss to the #9 team in the country is nothing to be ashamed about. If I had to do it again I would have called time out so Whitworth would have had a better shot, he was hot all game hitting 6-7 from 3 so maybe a long range shot should have been the call. Who knows but this is one the guys can hold their heads high on.

Up Next: The Jacks come back to Billings to face the Rice Owls, the 4th time they will have faced a team from Texas this year.

          Owls squeak by Jacks!

(AP) - The Jacks lost today to the Rice Owls after quite a battle the entire game. Vandrell Smith and Jamarr Gunn led the team in scoring with 17 and 16 respectively, Gun had a double-double with 16 points and 14 rebounds.

Coaches Corner: We gave that one away, some late turnovers and missed wide open shots leave me with a bad taste in my mouth, hopefully we rebound from this game and get onto a winning run. A scary moment happened for us though when Gerry Corner went down with an injury, he later returned but if he struggles returning from the injury it will leave the Jacks with only 3 guards on their roster.
Up Next: The Jacks go to Arkansas to play the 4-2 Arkansas Razorbacks from the SEC.

Jacks lose close one in overtime!

(AP) - The Jacks forced overtime with a late comeback against the razorbacks and were a hair away from reaching a second overtime. Vandrell Smith went up for a layup and was clearly fouled on the way up but refs didn’t see or didn’t want to see the foul and didn’t call it as time expired and the ball fell short, the free throws would have given the Jacks the chance to tie the game and force a double overtime.

Coaches Corner: That’s busch league officiating right there! Talk about home court advantage, I think if we are playing anyone other than an SEC school at home we get that call but no one wants to see a Summit school force double overtime with a much “better” and “faster” team. I’m not saying it was a conspiracy, I’m just saying it is pretty fishy. An injury note: Jari Zuzak will miss the next 20 days with a High Ankle sprain, this puts the Jacks down to 3 guards and only two are healthy with Corner injured.

Even if the loss was close, still a good game. And good to see Smith is still has it but has some supporting teammates to help him out.

Ya, was a great game, came down to a lousy call but that happens.. Smith is the best pure shooter I have without a question and now that i have a inside force in Gunn I am able to do a little inside out type game.

Jacks start conference play off big!

(AP) - Today the Jacks showed the Oakland Grizzlies just why they were the Summit League Champs last year. The Jacks today started off conference play the way they finished last season, that is with a win. The Jacks, who were led by Jamaar Gunn shalacked the Grizzlies in 66-43 rout. The Jacks were able to do this while missing starters Troy Kinloch and Jari Zuzak to injuries.

Coaches Corner: Despite having two of our starters out with injury we played pretty well today Gunn really picked up the slack for the injured guys and are bench guys played extremely well against some of the best players they will see all year. Oakland has a bunch of guys back this year and it will be tough to take two from them.
When asked about the scoring inefficiencies of his Small Forwards in the game (Whitworth, 0 and Montrimas, 3) coach Baker had this to say. “Both guys had a rough game, but when the rest of the team is firing on all cylinders you can afford to have an off day, if things don’t turn around and Troy isn’t back I’ll have to take a look at putting (Gerry) Corner in there to mix things up.”

Kinloch is expected back in 5 days while Zuzak is expected to miss the next 20, will their injuries affect the Jacks more than it already has?
Up Next: The Jacks stay home to face the 2-4 Western Illinois Leathernecks.

Re: CH2k8-- The coaching Legacy of Dan Baker

Jacks get to .500 with close win over Leathernecks!

(AP) - Today the Jacks looked very bad shooting from the floor going a total of 18-52 but were able to squeak by the Western Illinois Leathernecks thanks to some help from Jamaar Gunn who scored 26 points and had 10 of those 18 made field goals. Usually potent scorer Vandrell Smithhad only 11 points (6 of them being from the free throw line), and missed 11 of his 13 shots from the field, he made his first shot of the game with 5 minutes to go in the game.

Coaches Corner: That was a scary game, those Leathernecks are a tough team, they had a bunch of young guys but still game out and gave us quite the game. I knew it was going to be trouble when Vandrell came out ice cold. We were down 6 with 8 to play in the first half and were looking terrible, at that point I decided we were going to stick with the starters come hell or high water. Gunn carried us again and to me is a dead lock for first team all conference and maybe even conference player of the year.
Coach Baker was asked what he is going to do to get his squad back firing on all cylinders and had this to say. “Well honestly I’m not going to change anything, Troy (Kinloch) should be back soon and Jari (Zuzak) to follow, I think we have been playing well all year we just need to keep pace with how we have been playing.”
Kinloch is expected back in 3 days while Zuzak is expected to miss the next 19, will their injuries affect the Jacks more than it already has?

Up Next: The Jacks have a week off to get healthy and then face the Big 12 Oklahoma State Cowboys in Oklahoma.

Emergency News Flash: The Box score was lost in a fire at in the sports section of the paper last night, more at 11!

(Computer froze twice while trying to get the box score)

                      Final score was 57-54 Jacks

                        Jacks blown away!

(AP) - This is generally the part where we talk about the game, well all you have to do is look at the score to see how this game went. 114-78 Oklahoma State, that was embarrassing for all Jacks fans, there are now rumors that Coach Baker will be fired after his antics and his press conference.

Coaches Corner: That was embarrassing, not one of our players deserves to wash the shorts of a single guy on the Oklahoma State squad, ya we had some guys score a lot of points, but when you give up 114 points in a game you can’t just play offense. This team has more ups and downs than a game of chutes and ladders. Games like we had against Texas have me never wanting to leave, games like today make me want to go be an assistant coach at a high school the way we played.
The Athletic Director was told about what coach Baker has said and put him on probation reportedly having said, “If he wants to go coach high school then we can give him his wish, no other college will hire someone who acts like that and can’t win big games.”
Will Baker fall from grace or right the team next week?
Up Next: The Jacks go back to the friendly confines to face the Iowa State Cyclones (Another Big 12 opponent)
